  1. We have opted for the stoke, stone, penkridge, stourport route. We might be starting off on friday if the money gets transfered quickly. But if not it will be on monday, because there is a dishwasher to come off the boat and a cupboard to be put in its place, but they will not do the work until all the funds for the boat are in place.
  2. Well thats it folks contracts on the house have been exchanged and we are picking the boat up next Friday. What size anchor will I need for a 70ft boat and what thickness chain and rope. Whats the best material for rope. Cheers
  3. LOL Let me rephrase. Does anyone know of someone or recommend anyone who could travel to the Gloucester area to supply and fit a cratch cover and cratch board to a narrowboat which will be situated on the Gloucester to Sharpness canal. Whats the best material to use.Cheers
  4. Can anyone recommend a company for cratch covers and boards that will cover the Gloucester area. Whats the best material to use for covers. Thanks
  5. Thanks for that i,m sure we are going to enjoy it. When do the BW winter times end ?
  6. I hope all narrowboats with corridors down one side don,t list, this is the type we have gone for and I hope its not going to feel like a racing yacht on a windy day. Do they all do this ?
  7. When I put the route into canal plan I opted for 5hr days which gave me a 11 day cruise. As a complete narrowboat novice I thought it would be better to take my time and not rush into it. Would I be able to do the river severn on a high tide ? or would it be to dangerous.
  8. The pubs sound a good place to be. Only one problem, the wife as said no drinking on the boat, I,ve got to do the washing up for the next 30yrs because she has done it for the last 31yrs and i,ve got to loose weight. Tea total, anorexic and domesticated am I doing the right thing ?
  9. Sorry to ask whats the best link on the chain short link or long link and what size mm chain for a 70ft narrowboat ?
  10. Deposit paid, looked over the boat again but no anchor so I will get one before I travel down to Gloucester. Hopefully going to be travelling by 3rd March and we can,t wait. Just a little bit wary of the river severn are there any bad places to watch for ? Cheers
  11. Thanks, I will ask about the batteries. If you would like to take a look tbe boat is called hazel laphroaig and is sitting at longport brokerage, its also on apollo duck. Tell us what you think. Cheers
  12. Thanks for the information, we are going up tomorrow then dropping a deposit down on monday. I will check the boat to see what equipments on there and if I need anything I will make sure I have got it before I start off. The engine as only done 600 hours or so but I was going to get the brokerage to change all the oil, filters and check the belts before I started off. The boat as been for sale for 12 months and is sitting out of the water on blocks at the moment and I am a bit of a stick in the mud where oil and filters are concerned. Even when I had a bike and it hadn,t done the reccomended miles for an oil change it was always changed before it went out the next year. If there is anything else you think I might need to know just say. Cheers
  13. This is our first narrowboat nothing like feet first, so experience no. There will be the wife, myself and the dog. I will be booking two weeks off work from when we pick the boat up, hopefully that will give us enough time without rushing. Apart from a windlass are there any other keys I might need for the locks ?
  14. Hi as you can see by the wanted ads we have been looking for a 60ft - 70ft narrowboat. We have now found a boat which is 70ft and are going to put a deposit down on monday. What I would like to know is how long will it take me to get from Stoke to Gloucester and are there any awkard parts, any stoppages etc. We should be travelling the first/second week of March. Thanks
  15. I don,t know about blacking try these sites they may be of some use www.epoxyproducts.com or www.nauth.com
  16. Looks like we are in the same boat, excuse the pun. I to had a motorcycle accident in 1979 at 17 hit a car head on he was overtaking a stationary car. The bike, a kork ballington replica HEH 670V in kawasaki green. Had my left leg in pins for two weeks then they decided to take it off below the knee. I still ride bikes last one was a Honda CB750 K2 1973 mint. And i,m proud to say I have never claimed disability or had any badges and worked all my life. I consider myself lucky theres always someone worse off.
  17. Cheers fella, 40 lts per month seems okay when coal is £8 a bag. Someone told me his mate had one and he was putting £90 a fortnight in it, a little over the top I think.
  18. Thats just took a couple of grand from the sale of marmaduke, i,m sure I read its had a new engine as well, no wonder why its for sale.
  19. What sort of running cost are these bubble stoves and do they run on diesel or heating oil. l am new to this but have seen one on a boat i,m interested in buying. thanks
  20. Thanks folks Slowly and surely I,m getting there. Frightning to think I could be on a boat next month can,t be as bad as taking an artic into the centre of London.
  21. Just can,t seem to get my head around boat electrics. When you need the gennie when you don,t, is a 12/1600/70 inverter going to be enough. I can,t get to grips trying to understand.
  22. So a 1600w inverter would easily cope with led lights,tv,pumps etc and then use the generator or the 3.5kva travelpack to power the larger stuff washing machine, microwave. So are 3 220 domestic batteries okay
  23. What size inverter is considered to be ample. I viewed a 70ft boat with a victron 12/1600/70 yet elsewhere you see boats with 3000w inverters. And would bowthrusters need there own batteries. Same boat fitted with 1 90a/h start and 3 220a/h domestic
  24. Cheers I will look into that one, a cheaper option than a cocooned engine. Did you find the EU30i fairly quite.
  25. Hi blackrose Just wondered how you get on with the honda EU30i I see they are about the 2.5k mark and I see they have a 5 year warranty thats if you take it back to be serviced. What sort of hours are they between servicing and what life expectancy could you expect running it for 5 hours a day. I was told that the new EU30i weighs in at only 35kg instead of the old weight of 63kg. It seems a big weight reduction or have I been told duff information. Perhaps its a cheaper option than a cocooned generator. Cheers
