I am not sure how you are going to know if they are 12.7 or 12.8 without disconnecting them

Thanks but I meant whilst-charging ,the voltage creeps up and went over 14.7 v and I wasn’t sure if that was harming the batteries, from other answers it looks like I can charge up to 14.8 v. What made me think twice is that when on once a week hook up the v charge doesn’t  go above 14.6v

  2. Thanks for replies, they are Leoch 230 AGM,s had them for 4 years, first time I have used a generator. I went into a marina last night to give them a good charge, and victron bmv 7.2  showed not going over 14.6 v, to charge them down to 1 amp over night. I was worried when after two hours charging with the Honda generator240 outlet it started going over 14.7 v, but it was charged enough for me then anyway. But if I got iced in could I do a long charge, and would it harm the batteries, would the charger regulate it. Should I disconnect at 12.7v or leave it till 12.8v

    Lots  of differing advice

  3. Hi,in lock down and now in front of a stoppage  I usually charge my batteries by an hour or so a day, using the engine, them after two or three days go for a cruise slowly to empty rubbish , pump out maybe, get water etc, and that takes batteries to 90 percentish , then once a week, go on a marina electric bollard for an overnight charge, taking my amps down to less then 1 percent.

I have three 230 ah AGM batteries, which are about four years old now, so I thought all this idling around, I usually cruise cruise cruise as a cc, I would get a generator to stop running the engine for no reason. Eventually got one off e bay for £575.  EU 201 ,

tried it for first time yesterday, it sounded quite loud at first, but gradually got quieter, until so quiet, I checked outside it was still there!

however the voltage kept rising as to be expected , but it started going over 14.7 volts charging. But it had been charging for nearly two hours so I stopped it probably 90 pc charged, 24 amps going in on 690ah batteries.

I have never really noted the voltage when charging through land line, but as I am now doing my weekly land line charge, I am noticing differences.

when the amp counter goes to around 25 amps the charger usually goes to float, but as I write it has only just gone to float, at 6amps?

    I have a victron 120 amp charger.

is it safe to charge my AGMs over 14.7 v, ? And why on landline does it not go that high, 14.6 this time but not checked before

is the power supply irreverent, ie second hand Honda generator

will my charger inverter regulate any irregular input.

Can I knacker my batteries by using a generator through my victron charger if it goes above 14.7 v

Should I just trust the charger and forget it.

on float now and voltage decreasing.

If you are stuck, I could take delivery for you, we are 8 miles from Northwich, and fetch it to you in our car. PM me if you need help.

That’s so kind thank you, if I can’t get it sorted, I will pm you.

If you are on the canal then the services at  Anderton are easy access for delivery. I've had Majestic there a few times and the coalboat stocks up there.

If you are on the river then Acton Bridge VM is also easily accessible.

Thanks, but I can’t stay on the services all day, and they can arrive 8 till 8 , that’s the main problem for me.

It always feels a bit strange, but I've had things delivered to me countless times since March at random canal-side locations, both by courier and Royal Mail. If you can get your boat to somewhere you can give an obvious address for, I wouldn't hesitate to go with that.

Royal Mail, perhaps surprisingly, are better at the game than couriers. Royal Mail have yet to fail to deliver to places such as 'circus box office, Stonehaven Common', 'rey/red/black boat reg 12345, canal basin' or 'grey/black/red boat reg. 12345, near this house'. I had one courier drop off at the house (whose occupier was really quite friendly, thankfully), and I've had Amazon disappear a parcel outright having made it to the occupier of the aforementioned house and been told to walk thirty seconds down the towpath. No other problems whatsoever.

I see, but its being somewhere close to see the delivery man arrive, I am between the salt barge and Anderton on the canal.

  5. Hi, as a cc, I am trying to buy a generator off e bay,  I am near northwich, it will have to be delivered by private courier. I have never done this before, I have put in a bid, and if successful I will pay on top the postage. Which I have messaged to the seller. But where can I get it to be delivered to. Pubs shut , local marina only open a few hours a day, usual drop off points via e bay , Amazon won’t take a heavy generator, Honda eu201, any advice options, I have not thought of apart from a long drive to a relative to pick it up. ?

plus what is the protocols on them delivering to me.

Presumably.  If I was the OP I'd pay the extra and get the 2600w version.  Then his monster charger will get to work at it's fullest.

Hi, thanks for that, but can I ask why? I have been cc’ing for four years, I have never wanted a generator or needed one, I pull into a marina once a week to charge up then go. I am now not allowed to do that regime’ actually because of an emergency stoppage right now, and going forwards, I could get stuck with marinas not letting you in. I don’t want a ‘monster charger,’ why be unfriendly, I have asked for help through my lack of experience on generators.if I have misread you , I apologise, but I will buy the version you specify, so thanks for that.

I'd suggest getting something like a Kipor 2000 (which misleadingly is rated at 1600w continuous - I did say to check continuous ratings)

I picked mine up as 'almost new' for £300 you'd pay twice that for a used Honda 2000i (1600 watts) and over £1000 for a new one. The Honda is slightly quieter 'on paper' but not really noticable 'to the ear' at equivalent revs.

It's about the same weight as a toilet cassette or bag of coal (it weighs 22kg) and would easily power your Victron if you dial it back to 60 or 70 amps.

If you have the generator running at max RPM it is not only a bit noisy, making the genny work hard but uses a lot of fuel. It will be far happier running at around 75% powering your battery charger at 60-70a.

Very easy to lift off the boat, very easy to start and uses about 1 litre of petrol per hour at 1600w output.

    Wouldn't be without it !

Could you send me a link to that, as I’m just confusing myself with models .

My comments on ash levels were in response to Timx who I assumed was using a squirrel - but on re-reading his post, it doesnt actually say which stove. We've only had this squirrel this year ...the previous stove was a boatman.....and I would love to only have to do the ash every 4-5 days! From my experience in the 50's and 60's, anthracite was always the 'best' fuel in terms of use and ash.......shame these current stoves dont work as well on it (although I have not tried the squirrel on it yet!).

Yes I’m using a squirrel, I used the old fire bricks again around the sides, and am using 2/3 bags a week keeping it going 24/7 but only a few coals on during the day to keep it on tick over, it was never this good a couple of years ago.

Another vote for excel and the coal inserts. I only empty the ash once per 24 hours.

I gave the chimney three sweeps last year prior to using it, replaced the glass and rope, and the fire bricks, when i lit it again last November, it was like a blast furnace, had to put reflective insulation around above the fire boards, I then used extra old fire bricks to reduce the capacity , as it was that hot.
I thought the coal I had last year was excellent, burning through the night, and ash to be emptied every five or six days, however, this year, fire not burning quite so hot, but completely different coal, still no ash , and fire stays in all night, empty at a push four days.

I think giving the fire a good overhaul has worked wonders, rather than the coal.  Might be a co incidence I suppose but this is fifth year of my use and has been remarkable against first three years, with then needing to empty every morning.

Most NB with a well deck & front lockers have holes at deck level in the locker side, those could allow petrol fumes into the boat. That is unless you are talking about what i suppose is the forepeak but those often contain the gas bottles and the BSS examiner might take a din view of storing other unsecured equipment with gas bottles.

No where else to store them, drain holes are both sides of well deck lockers , designed to let water out, but as far as I can see, fumes would have to rise to get through front door vents. Surely they would vent down and out first.

Using the dip switches you should be able to set this to charge at 100%, 75%, 50%, or 25%, I.e. 120A, 90A, 60A, 30A. So, if you find your genny can’t cope with a higher setting, you can reduce it.

As I think I said, my Honda EU10i “just” copes with the 60A setting on my Sterling Pro Charge Ultra 60A charger. When I say “just”, I have to start charging with the genny in full speed, (Hare mode). Then, once the charger is charging, I can switch the genny to variable speed, (tortoise mode).

Would it cope in the same way with the 60A setting on your Victron.... probably, possibly, I dint know?

In your position I would probably get the EU20i, (or equivalent Kipor), with its’ 1600w continuous capability, and put up with the extra weight.

Have you thought about where you are going to store your genny and petrol safely?

Thanks, looking at getting the2000 kipor now, gennerator stored one side of bow locker, with drain hole, and petrol other side with drain hole,

Is the Victron a combined inverter/charger or do you have a separate mains charger. If you have neither then you can buy a charger to suit the generator but for the smaller generator a suitable charger will take longer to charge the  batteries. Do not even think about using the nominal 12V output to try to charge batteries.

So I need the larger generator ?

  13. Because of the times we are in, as a cc , I think I need a generator over the winter as I am not going to be moving much, I usually do once a week or so in a marina, to top batteries up, but this is getting harder. I have three 230 AGMs and a victron 3.5 kw inverter, if I am just wanting a generator to charge batteries, do I need the Honda eu 220, or will the Honda 101 suffice.sorry for my ignorance, never wanted one b4 but now needs must.

Nothing, it was a free lecture on how diesel degenerates. I can understand how people do not wish to comment on this forum.

    So what are you saying,?

I kep tanks full as possible in winter, and add stuff if in doubt. I

I was relaying what I was told by the lecturer, I don’t understand your aggressive stance, I should of not contributed.well done goodbye.

  15. 9 hours ago, Alan de Enfield said:

I don't know who told you 'not to keep diesel to long . Diesel (unlike petrol) will 'keep' for years without problems.

It is advisable to top-off your tanks for Winter, as otherwise large amounts of condensation can form in the tank, drip down into the diesel, sink to the bottom, more condensation forms, drips ......................  repeat .................. repeat.

You can get several inches of water building up in the bottom of your tank, if it gets high enough to reach the pick-up tube you then satar getting problems as you try to 'burn' water instead of diesel.

I went to a lecture at the crick show a couple of years ago, and the engineer giving the lecture, had lots of graphs and photographs showing how diesel degenerates, he said to add marine 16 , but to use up your diesel as much as possible then refill.  He said your primary filter should be relied on for water, and not to keep your tank permanently topped up.But if your not using your boat over winter it would make sense for reasons given, but he said diesel does degenerate into “gloop”

  16. I bought my boat from a cc,er 7 years old, Isuzu 42, counter didn’t work but he estimated it at 1000 hrs a year, I have been doing 1500 hrs a year, so 12 years old , and probably done 17500, as a guestimate, starts first time, purrs quietly, on tick over people have asked me is it electric because they can’t hear it. The original owner was an engineer by trade, and I make sure I do all the necessary oil change , filter changes etc.
