  1. Thats great thank you, I will make a note of all of that, the tesco bit is handy as well, thanks, I wont mention the Dalton arms bit though as she will take it the wrong way...

Also I note the lower water level, I experienced that on the Macclesfield last week, untidy mooring needed in the rural areas, particularly if a female tries to get off, but quite funny, why are girls not good at jumping ,is it the same premise as throwing a ball.Seemed to be miles away from the bank and one tight turn and your in the silt. If you spent that amount of time on the Lancaster must be good, and I thought two weeks was too long lol, thanks for the reassurance, think im still at the need to go somewhere all the time phase, lol. cheers again.

  2. Hi, having just completed most of the cheshire ring, [apart from the city bit, prefer countryside],We have now decided to book two weeks on the Lancaster in June,[she wants a rest after the macclesfield and heartbreak locks on T&M][although I did most of them lol].Has anyone been on Lancaster recently and have any tips about good hostelries and timings, although I presume we could meander up and down from preston to tewitfield twice in that time.

    Cheers Timx

  3. Hi we are going from Lymm on the cheshire ring for ten nights and have decided to go to the peak forest canal down to the basin arm at whalley bridge via trent and mersey ,then turn round and return rather than complete the ring, any suggestions about best stopping off places and pubs, etc . All suggestions valued, going tommorrow, cheers, [i can read on the way if i can get wifi]

  4. The Llangollen this time of year, dont forget to have a great breakfast grindley brook(small staircase of locks)before 10am they serve breakfast.almost on the lock. and for fuel there is a garage two locks before the staircase locks which sells red diesel into your jerry cans,30 seconds walk from lock.

I did it solo and loved it in may, plenty of hire boats around then.once in Llangollen try all the pubs.the Llangollen is well worth doing now and you will either love or hate going over the famous pontycysylite aqueduct.and remember if you found it scary you have to return by it....have a nice time

How does anyone do locks solo, amazin

  5. The southern end of the Stratford Canal has a sequence of (?) 7 locks in a row which is not a problem but just be aware it will take quite a while and with just the two of you will be good physical work for a novice single crew. Forget the northern end as that has 19 or so locks in a row, not worth it on a long weekend. I was on the Oxford canal about 15 years ago and I remember it to be about right for the amound locks but meanders a lot (shouldn't be an issue for a 2 man boat but was a bugger for a 70 foot boat) .

When planning how far to go remember that, as the canals are narrower than the boats, you can only turn round at certain points. The official points are called "winding" points and are marked on canal maps (also most marinas or other side junctions can be used for winding) and the shorter the boat the easier it is to find an unnoficial spot wide enough to turn in.

The term "more haste less speed" is apt for a canal boat so take things easy, enjoy the journey and don't be too concerned about the distance you cover.

My wife and I are planning a canal boating trip on the weekend of the 9th & 10th of April 2011.

I'm hoping some people of this forum could answer a few questions I have about the whole canal boating experience.

    1. Where should we go.

-We are looking for a canal that will give us an opportunity to experience a bit of everything (ie. locks, rural scenery, local pubs, aqueducts/tunnels, etc).

-After doing a bit of research Llangollen seems to include all the above, although I'm a little afraid it will be too busy (we would like a bit of atmosphere without the experience feeling like Disney Land of canals- if that is possible). What is a typical weekend in April like on the Llangollen?

-Is there a canal with similar experiences as the Llangollen, but less busy, in a different area in England? (We are flexible on area)

    2. How long?

-Over a 2 Day/1 Night or 3 Day/2 Night journey what sort of distance and what can been seen?

-If we decide on the Llangollen what would be a good town to depart from which would include the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in this time frame?

    3. How much?

-What is the reasonable cost of a short break trip (2 to 3 nights). Are some canals more expensive to hire from than others.

-Do we need to book over the Internet prior, or should we just arrive at a town and ask around the boat yards.

-Any tips on where/who to hire from? Does anybody a canal they would like to hire a good rate?

Thanks to everyone (in advance) who takes the time to post some advice.

I apologise if I sound a bit naive, but I'm really looking forward to experiencing such a beautiful area in such a unique way.

    Stephen

Liangollen was a good idea, but all canals are nice, have been there and oxfoerd both gorgeous, my only tip is make sure you get a route guide so you have an idea where to stop etc and where to head for for the night, and plan the pubs wisely lol.

  6. Hi.

We are getting a boat out from lymn for ten days, want to go anti clockwise and travel to peak forest canal then back again as dont want to go through manchester, also want to try going to Whalley bridge for a look, will I have time to do that and go on the Anderton boat lift for a day on the river, only me and a female or would that be too much if wanting to sample the pubs as well...?or am I wrong not wanting to do the locks after the peak and sail through Manchester to complete the ring..your views would be appreciated or any other ideas??

  7. mm nice one havent decided yet,we do prefer to spend as much time as possible on the boat, I just find it hard not to explore pubs on the canalside, half the fun lol.will have to have a think, thanks.

preferably will do ten days but seems difficult to get a Thursday start from boat hirers

  8. Is the warwick ring possible in a week , starting from cathiron near rugby? will be mid April, with just two aboard, [one being a female, with their slow ways lol]

would it give time to sample the various hostelries, or be too much of a rush in just a week.??

  9. Hi lots of options to float down the llangollen from north west boat yards, so i would try latelink for mutiple choice at a better price.Have been twice from different boat yards, just depends what size you want at most competitive price, always better to have options...Timx

P.S Travelling after 6 pm till dusk there are not a lot of boats travelling, so if your looking for tranquility travel late, and spend the afternoon sampling the few good pubs, plan ahead with a good boat/pub guide.hic tx.
