  1. Hi, any advice from skipton to Leeds re moorings and can you moor overnight in Saltaire over night ? Any pub reccomendations welcomed .What is the time limits in Leeds , two or three days will do us, can you get a hook up there ? If going slow where is the best places to moor before Leeds and the last place to moor before Leeds? Thanks.

  2. Has it changed then ? October last year, there was space for about five boats outside the basin, and had been on previous visit. They charged between £10 and £15 for a hook up mooring in union wharf if there was a boat out, which there usually was, but best to ring ahead, or moor outside of basin and walk into office on their change over days, I think it was only manned on a Friday and Saturday. Excellent place to go to, and the little pub at Foxton locks has some friendly people if you have a chat. There is a few nice moorings in the country on the way down, but no pubs once out of Foxton vicinity b4 you get to Mh. There are also a couple of moorings b4 you reach the last bit with a short cut to town, you will find somewhere, and we never had a problem, but we wintered there a couple of years ago and was there last October. We also had no problems in Leicester.

  3. Try Mersey motorboat club, they have linear moorings, outside scarisbrick marina, also by the ship in haskayne, and in Maghull, they are nearly half the cost of the marina, but you do have to join the club, join in things and do the odd job, mowing grass or painting something etc. I think they have moorings available now if you contact them.

I'm planning on having one last go at the Leeds Liverpool next summer, before I get too decrepit to handle Wigan.  I'm starting from Macclesfield and probably going up the T&M and Bridgewater and then as far as Bingley before turning round.  It's been nearly thirty years since I last went up there, so any advice as to stopping places, shopping etc anywhere north of Lymm would be much appreciated.

If going through Blackburn, there are lock keepers on duty on Tuesday and Thursday's. Also watch out for approaching bridge 127, the canal narrows where there is over grown reeds, but if you keep away from the reeds you will ground the boat as the concrete tow path  side juts out under the water.

  5. If you tilt your light slightly towards the ceiling, apart from the light illumiminating the roof and sides ahead in tunnel, you should get an extra circle of light on the tunnel roof as shown in pic, if you keep that in centre of tunnel roof, you will never hit the sides again, and don't need to concentrate as much, more like playing a video game.

it stops oncoming boats being dazzled by your light, but does need to be placed top centre of your boat.

  6. Hi, we (two people) are planning on going through Wigan probably Thursday morning , through the locks, our boat is with fenders, 61.75', semi trad., if we meet another boat, can they be the same size going through the locks, any issues, ?

Where is best to moor after Wigan ?

Any tips on the trip, places to moor, not to moor etc?

plan to spend a month going there and a month going back, any advice and tips greatfully received .

    Thanks.

Coxhead SB fixed or not ,I'm booked in for early July and was just wondering if overnight mooring in Maghull  is sensible as the crew may wish to take the train into Liverpool to do some serious drinking.

Maghull is fine to moor in, most boats moor just before the running horses, (pub) opposite the Mersey boat club moorings. You would need to get a taxi to the train station from there though, less than a £5  I would think, Maghull north. Train to Liverpool central or moorfields. Taxi -526 5050 ( blue line)

This appears your best bet, lucky to find a pub with a tv before then, twenty min walk or a bus , straight road from pub at Thrupp. BT pub sports finder on line is your friend, or sky sports pub finder.

I don't see what's so special.  The pub was shut, I've seen more wildlife in a tramp's vest and getting back out up the locks was complete fiasco. The rest was pretty ordinary, but perhaps I fell for the hype and was expecting too much.  I won't make the detour next time I'm passing but, fortunately for the Monty, lots of hugely more favourable opinions are available and I sincerely hope you have a fab time. :)

We went two weeks ago and Id agree with this quote above,we booked for two nights, but once down to the end changed our mind and came straight back out the next day. Had no trouble with  draught or weed, just a bit boring. Also there is no shop at the end as advertised in guide book. The pub at the end is good for beer and food, with friendly host.

  10. Hi, our plan this year is to go to Liverpool then up the Leeds and Liverpool canal to towards Leeds and back(. I would like to go to York and down the river Trent, but not that confident yet, and the dimensions seem a squeeze).

Our boat is 60' with fenders and rudder it comes to 61.75. So we can go up and down Wigan flight, technically, but looking at some of those leaky gates, it looks a bit scary. Is it worth doing? Will I be risking the boat coming down if the locks are that bad? I know the trip to Liverpool is fine , it's the Wigan and beyond that worries me, any advice greatfully recieved ?

The boat is a semi trad, so another question is, if going through very leaky gates, would it be better to cover the stern in some sort of angular tent to stop water finding its way into engine bay ?i want to have fun, not stress, so it's not a thing I have to do, but would like to me to. Cheers

Why pay someone before you've even asked the experts? I've just given you the number for LeeSan - unless you're going to pay someone to call them? ?

We don't know if the problem is going to be difficult to diagnose yet. What makes you think it's the switch?

I think you'll be lucky to find anyone with enough expertise to fix it unless it's Vetus themselves and that will cost a small fortune. This is just my opinion, but apart from the very wealthy, for most people part of living or owning a boat involves getting your hands dirty and learning about how the various systems work.

By the way, you should probably be switching the toilet off (along with the water pump) everytime you leave the boat anyway. It's just a good habit to get into. If those vacuum or pressurised systems leak they will cycle and that can lead to expensive burned out pumps, flooding or evan a fire.

Not ignoring your advice, I was being pessimistic, I was hoping for an easy fiddle fix. I will be ringing up for further advice. Reason I thought it was the switch, was because I looked at manual and although it did not give my fault, it gave something else akin, which , said get new switch, but obviously I won't do that till its diagnosed correctly.

I have a Dometic vacuflush cassette toilet and if the cassette isn't properly sealed you can lose the vacuum without losing water from the toilet bowl and then the vacuum pump will cycle. I imagine the same principle applies to vacuum pump-out toilets.

I don't know your toilet but I would call Lee Sanitation and ask for someone in technical. They could give you some advice and might be able to send you an exploded parts diagram. Don't bother calling after lunch as they don't seem to answer. If they are normal o-rings then see if you can order generic ones from eBay before buying from LeeSan or Vetus. They're measured by diameter (I think it's ID) and thickness gauge (diameter). You'll also need a tube of silicone grease.

    LeeSan 01295 770000

When you call them it will help if you have the exact model of your toilet.

Thank you,so there could be other reasons rather than the control panel, difficult to diagnose then, and the problem is not identified in the instruction manual, under fault finding. Looks like I am paying someone to find out.

I don't know the Vetus version but is the water in the loo slowly draining away through the seal and then the vacuum pump running to remake the vacuum? that will

probably require a new seal. If it is actually filling with water and then flushing I guess it could be a pressure switch but there could be things with wires attached and that is black magic.

Thanks for reply, but no,everything is as normal, just flushes on its own a few minutes after use.

Would it not be acceptable to have a 'switched-flush' ?

50p switch, use it when needed, switch off when its flushed, or

pay a bit extra for a vacuum switch that switches off after a pre set time (you set it at what ever time period is suitable)

Sounds ok but probably beyond my capabilities. Thanks tho.

Probably not the pressure sensitive switches in that touch pad but the run timer electronics that it switches.

Ah right, thanks, any solutions you can think of?, I have just come back to the boat after ten days away, could it be damp ? Is it a professional job then, I'm not that handy, ?

  16. My toilet is self flushing every few minutes, I have to turn the power off to it, and back on when I want to flush it, otherwise it will continue doing it automatically.

Any ideas what I should do to reset it. Does  that  flush panel ,flip off ,with a screwdriver, it feels quite strongly adhered, or should I be looking elsewhere?

It only started doing it yesterday, I left it turned off overnight, but has continued this morning. I have only just had it pumped out.
