  1. Hmm.....Yeah,which presumably is why diesels are better..... I would imagine that there is some sort of power/torque to prop size calculation tho' ?? Too much power/torque on too small a prop would just lead to cavitation, would it not ??
  2. So........I have just been reading the 'speeding' thread and I got to thinking....... How much power is too much power ?? I mean, some of your narrowboats have as little as 30/40 hp,don't they ?? The other day,I was looking at a dutch barge type boat, that I know has 165 hp..... So,how much power is too much ?? I know that there will be lots of variables, but in general, what do you think ?? Is there some sort of formula for deciding ?? If and when I eventually get a boat,I would want it to be capable of handling seas reasonably close to shore. How about a fire breathing, alcohol fuelled, blown V8 Chevy dragster motor in your narrowboat !??.....lol. You lot would be complaining about the 'wash' then,eh ??
  3. I take it that you and Wobbly live at Clarence Dock then ?? What sort of boats do you two have,if you don't mind me asking ?? I wouldn't mind paying a visit actually,to have a natter/get more info on boats/canal life...... Actually,I WAS there last week, when I called in at BW's offices and I came across the bridge to have a look at the dock/marina...... I spoke to the lady that does the boat trips, when they came in whilst I was there (Black Prince I think it was).
  4. Thanks Robbo..... They do seem to like their big boats in France,eh ??
  5. Wow !....... Well, that's certainly bright enough ! . Actually, that light blue is a very similar shade to the main blue that I used to have on my trucks (when I was running haulage.) . The shade was called 'fiesta blue' in the ICI 383 line catalogue. The alternative name was 'Ice blue'.
  6. I was just looking at the 'green boat' thread and I got to thinking....... Most of the boats that I've seen so far all seem to be predominately dark colours, such as greens blues, burgundies or black. Is there a reason for this and are there any brightly coloured boats out there (like yellow, light blue etc)?? I would have thought that having a brightly coloured boat would make it much more visible.....
  7. Aah,excellent ! Thanks. More things to read up on !
  8. I'm just thinking 'out of the box',as I normally do..... Problem,solution,reaction....etc. Actually,on one of the boats I was looking at the other day day DID have the green / red marker lights on the back corners of the roof ! That was on a big boat tho'.... I find that it does help if you learn a little about what you're doing before you jump in the water......as it were..
  9. Hmmm.....O.K.... Do you have a link for that,please ?
  10. I was just thinking about operating your boats in the dark and hence the use of lights.... I was thinking of green and red side markers (ala aircraft etc), a pair of red rear lights (so that anyone coming up behind can see you well in advance) and 1 or 2 powerful headlights (so that you can see where you are going). Also, what about some 'working' lights on the side of the boat, for mooring or when you want to work on the bank or towpath ?? What do you think ?? Am I thinking too much 'vehicle based' methods or what ...??
  11. Heh heh....beautiful ! I loved that...very entertaining. . Fred Dibnah would have been in his element having a look at that !
  12. Aah yes....Thank you Howard. Useful info there...... The gentleman on the narrowboat that I met at Castleford was telling me about Goole museum/marina. Must make time to go along there. Might learn some more,eh ? . Useful to know that there's somewhere nearby that does 'tutoring/boatmanship' lessons too.
  13. Well, you need to visit a few recovery equipment sites or even eek bay. You can start here... http://www.ledlightbars.co.uk/ or http://www.premierhazard.co.uk/standard.html ... There are lots of variations available. Have a look...
  14. Yes,I was wondering about that too...... I thought that it might be some sort of 'visibility' requirement..... If you want your boat to be really visible (at night) you could use some of that 'diamond tape' that you see on the back of large trucks....most seen on recovery trucks, for exactly that reason.
  15. His birthday suit !?? lolol..... Can't put that on inside out can he ??
