I think that there may be a dose of sour grapes in your posts as a past boater.

I have used an electric self pump out kit all my boating days and never fouled anywhere.

Yes I do pump out into lavatories, Elsan pits and lift foul manholes. (I make certain that they are foul and not surface water).

I leave the facility cleaner than when I started.

Nothing I pump out will block anything, it has already exited my boat via a 30mm diameter hole. In fact it is fully liquidised. I know because I watch it so that I know when to rinse the tank and hoses.

Conversely I have seen cassette uses make unholy messes,  Portapotty uses are even worse because they seem to struggle with the things being  bigger and not so organised to empty.

Another out of interest question just because I am genuinely interested; how do you establish the drain is a foul drain and not surface water?

Paperless toilets do exist.  I've never used one, but imagine it would be an interesting experience........

Edited to add that I have the CRT Emergency number as 08004799947    Is this still the case?

I think that's the out of hours emergency number. The normal 0330 number should be used in normal working hours but it also seems to work on a Saturday morning. I've certainly reported issues with locks etc. on the 0330 number. Maybe I pressed 1 because I'm a boater and that then gave me a further menu including "To report a problem on the waterways" press 1 (other numbers are available).

  3. Looking at the biog of our new Labour MP for Scarborough and Whitby she doesn't seem to have much previous interest in inland waterways. She's well into the arts though so that's a good thing. I intend to write to her about the Fund Britain's Waterways campaign once the dust has settled and her parliamentary email address has been set up. I did write to the previous (Tory) encumbent on this subject and got no response from him whatsoever.

  4. When we did the crossing I asked the CRT office about needing a life jacket for our cat. The person in the office on the phone didn't know the answer and said they would get back to me. They didn't. So the cat didn't get to wear a life jacket. I think there would have been significant danger (to me) in trying to get a life jacket onto the cat. All three humans on board wore a life jacket as did all other humans on the same crossing. For the sake of some pounds why wouldn't you?

Tried that and yes you still need to enter a valid mobile phone number. (I didn't try entering say, a valid landline number.)

It appears to be 12 quids to stay overnight for arrivals after 7.30pm. Presumably some other (unspecified) charge applies for arrivals before 7.30pm. The whole sign is bewilderingly complex and intimidating.

    Yes, very confusing.

Its about 56 hours from Preston Brook to Meadow Lane lock (River Trent) so eminently possible even with only 8 hours per day cruising

There are geographical boundries that Bridgewater boats on the reciprical arrangement cannot go past. Barbridge junction on the Middlewich Branch is one such boundry. There are others in other directions. I pretty sure Nottingham is beyond all boundaries.

no, I don’t suppose there is, but somewhere perhaps to think about for a day off and a mooch about town, when it rains and rains and rains and…

    😃

You can't stay moored there whilst the museum is open unless you are actually visiting the museum. I think the mooring is only available from 4pm to 8am.

No. Facilities on the Bridgewater are not good. There some litter bins in the town.

Thorn Marine in Stockton Heath have an elsan that is free to use. Stretford Marina in the other direction may be able to help.

Yes but that is when i get confused, the map does not show my sightings.

You have to scroll down a bit (ignoring the map bit). Click on the "Boat" box and your boat(s) will apear, click on the relevant boat (if you only have one boat it will be the only one listed). Don't bother with dates, click on "Search" and a list of your sightings will appear. You can then, if you wish, use the "Functional Location" code to find that location on the map. The map doesn't show your boat.
