  1. A fair point, but sure any restoration/preservation is better than none at all? Even if it doesn't get rebuilt for passage, sure it's better that its restored rather than it being turned into the latest out of town retail complex because it's just abandoned?

To be honest, I'm looking at it as a way of meeting some likeminded people and having a laugh...

  2. Ah, good point well made  My fault that one... that will teach me to reply to a topic off the 'whose viewing what' list

The points are still valid though... if anyone is planning a trip with children then this is the best way forward is to ensure all staff have appropriate training. There seems to be more and more cases in the press about 'responsible persons' being taken to court because of an accident on school field trips or activities involving young people.

  3. Thanks for the replies folks.

I've changed the title of the thread accordingly

Has anyone else been on a camp? I was thinking of doing the IWA festival camp to start off with as that kind of thing is right up my street, and if I enjoy that go on one of the more traditional restoration camps next year.

  4. I've put this in holidays because I'm not really sure quite where else it fits...

Has anyone here done a WRG Canal Camp? If so, did they enjoy it, would then go again?

I'm thinking of doing one this year and would be interested to get thoughts and opinions?

  5. Sorry guys, I normally like to keep these sorts of topics open as we get valuable feedback, but at present these threads are like a ticking timebomb so I'm making a pre-emtive strike and closing the thread now having addressed the issues raised in my post above. If anyone has anything further to add then please do so in private to me, Bernie, Allan or Daniel. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

  6. To answer the issues raised in this post:

John, as you are aware, topics can be closed when they start to drift away for the discussion. This was a rule which I used to vigarously enforce back in the old days prior to the upgrade, but since we have become so busy it is nearly impossible to do. At present, we are taking a very hard line to rid the forum of the petty bickering, arguing and unacceptable posts what have been all of the site recently. Some will argue that this is censorship, that we are being too hard or that we are being unfriendly. Unfortunately the actions of certain members recently have left me with little choice. I no longer have the time to log on and read through 10 to 12 PMs of complaints and deal with them. Again, 99% of those here do not represent a problem and I ask those people to bear with us.

As for re-registering under a different name, this is a problem all forums have and there is very little we can do to prevent it. I ask people not to do it please because it just creates more of a headache for me.

As for cutting back on the dead wood, it is difficult to do. We already have an e-mail verification process to stop trolls from getting on the forum without having some valid form of off-site contact details, and short of manually validating accounts which is not practicable, there is little more that we can do.

I certainly don't want to delete the existing member database, as this risks a serious database corruption if it goes wrong and at present I don't have the time to repair it. Unfortunately people to drift away from websites when they find something else more suitable.

I'm going to move this to suggestions for now because there are some valid points raised here.

  7. I am disappointed that the site crew are having to edit posts and issue warnings already, despite the above text. We are taking a very hard stance against posts of an unsuitable nature. I ask again that members consider what they post or they will end up being banned from the site.

I am sorry for the very hard line, 99% of members have nothing to worry about. We will beat this problem of unfriendly and unsuitable posts.

Thank you to all of those who e-mailed me back in support. I have received over 100 e-mails from various members and unfortunately I have not had time to respond to all of them personally. Your comments are much appreciated.
