Day 10 (23/3/2013)

Woke up to a covering of snow this morning. And boy is it cold!! We also found out that after testing the aqueduct yesterday Peel Ports found that after maintenance it was leaking. So they advised the marina here not to send any of their hire boat that way as once they had let all the boats through either side of the aqueduct that had been waiting they were closing it again for further repairs. So with this news and the snow we have decided to stay here until Monday when hopefully the weather w

Started snowing here about 8am and although there has been some fairly big flakes it hasn't settled yet..............mind that could change!!   Taking the lull in proceedings to teach myself how to crochet.....................well I am trying. . And if we are still here tomorrow might even do some baking.

Day 8 (21/3/2013) Leigh to Bridgewater Marina

Soooo cold today! But we pressed on to Bridgewater Marina where we have taken refuge to see how the weather pans out over the next 2/3 days.   Leaving the L&L and entering the Bridgewater Canal       lots of stop planks along the Bridgewater, these were the first:       And lots of derelict mills.............cotton mills I believe. These are just two:           Safe and sound at the Bridgewater Marina:

Day 5 (18/3/2013) Still in Wigan

Still moored outside the CRT offices in Wigan today. So we walked down to Wigan Pier. Sad to see The Orwell closed and the windows barred.     The bronze statue of the man on the bridge seems to be weathering the state of the times but sadly there seems to be a couple of statues missing. The man at the lock neat the dry dock has gone as has the lady who was sat on the bench, The lady opposite Wigan Pier has been tagged, Such a shame!           The local "yoof" seem to use the t

New floor...

Fitted the new solid oak flooring into Casper, which went well. Hindered by a surprise covering of snow outside which had also frozen overnight delaying work until it warmed up a bit...

Day 4 (17/3/2013) Crooke to Wigan

Raining when we left Crooke this morning at 10am but did try to brighten up a little. Only 3 locks today but Ell Meadow Lock was really hard to work as the gates look as if they have been recently replaced. Nice to see how much the Wiganites value their waterway:       Passed Wigan Athletic football ground on the way into Wigan.       Once past there the surroundings turn urban very quickly.       I missed the statues as we past Wigan Pier so I will endeavour to get some tomo

The Journey Begins

Well, we finally left St Marys Marina on the 14th March 2013 to start our epic journey down to Brentford - with a few detours. Its been a safe haven for the winter months since we bought Islonian last October. We have made some lifelong friends whilst being there and I;m sure we shall meet some of them on our travels.   Day 1 (14/3/2013) - Rufford to Parbold. Islonian decided to develop a leak of gearbox oil. Smiffy found a loose nut and bolt on teh gearbox which was duly tightened and it se

Fitting the new stove...

Fitting the new stove went really well. I had already sorted the flue bends and I already had an extending flue, which really helped. The hard bit was removing the old flue, which was stuck in the roof collar. No amount of banging and tugging would remove it. We ended up removing the collar with flue still in, then hitting the flue with a sledge hammer until the collar just fell off...   The stove works well, it chucks out a good amount of heat and even with a fairly small fire the oven reache
