real_vibes Posted June 24, 2010 Report Posted June 24, 2010 Hi all. I am thinking of using RLL boats in Bristol for crainage, blacking and anodes (and a survey first). Does anyone have any experiences of the yard and their blacking service? I have read horror stories for poorly applied blacking flaking off with ease, would be great to find out if their standard is high? Many thanks

Many thanks I've got an RLL boat but I've not used them for blacking. One thing I do know is they quoted me about 3 times the market rate when I asked them to retrofit a solid fuel stove. How much do they charge for blacking?

Many thanks I have had experience of RLL and personnaly would not touch them with a barge pole, personnal opinion only. PM me and I will let you have the name and contact number of someone in Hilperton with whom I have dealt for a number of years and who does not do rip off prices and will do the job properly. FYI I am in the process of booking my boat in over the winter/spring for similar work as you are going to do.
real_vibes Posted June 24, 2010 Author Report Posted June 24, 2010 I wandered if that may be the case. The issue is waiting lists. We are keen to survey and thus purchase the boat in question, and I am under the impression that Hilperton are snowed until til Oct. Phone calls will be made 2moro and confirm these assumptions. Are there any other reputable yards in the Bath / Bristol area?

Waiting lists sadly do come into play. Understand your urgency but sure that you can work around options somewhere. Its all a part of the boating experience!!
deletedaccount Posted June 25, 2010 Report Posted June 25, 2010 You'll need to see when BoA dry dock is free (much cheaper than craning). That's the limiting factor round here. My boat was blacked by victoria from the hilperton boatyard last year for around £10 a foot all in. Two coats of rylard and it seems to be doing fine so far, Craning in bristol harbour is probably cheaper than using RLL, but you'd have to find someone to paint the bottom. Oh, remember there are two outfits at hilperton - abc and the boatyard. Abc have the crane, the boatyard use BoA dry dock.
Biggles Posted June 25, 2010 Report Posted June 25, 2010 I spoke to some bloke there about having a boat built before I got my project boat. All I can say was despite telling him of my trade and skills he was condescending and rude to the point of telling me that I was out of my depth and mad to try. He instantly had my back up, and TBH made me more determined to do it myself. Just my opinion of course. I am given to understand he does build a good boat, but not such a good bed side manner.
