The Life of a working boatman

On Monday the 9th of September the Burscough Heritage Group are proud to sponsor an illustrated talk by Derek Bent.

Derek, originally from a mining family in Wigan, has worked on the inland waterways of the country for the last 50 odd years and has many tales to tell.

Derek is currently the owner and operator of two of the former H and R Ainscoughs barges that where built in the 1930’s to transport imported grain from Liverpool docks to the flour mills at Burscough and Parbold.

The “motor” boat of the pair, “Ambush” Derek currently uses to provide a delivery service of essential supplies, of diesel and solid fuel to boaters on The Leeds and Liverpool canal between his base at Crooke near Wigan and the outskirts of Liverpool.

Both of the barges, “Ambush”, which is fitted with a diesel engine that provides the power to drive it along and to pull along “Viktoria”, it’s partner dumb barge, are in need of some restoration work, and it is Derek’s aim to establish a way of enabling this to happen.

What promises to be an interesting evening is at The Ring O Bells pub on Ring O Bells Lane in Lathom commences at 7.pm and everyone is welcome to attend for a £2 donation towards the activities of the Burscough Heritage Group.

For further information please ring either Mike on 07505 120453 or Sandra on 07966439701

The Life of a working boatman, again

On Monday the 9th of September the Burscough Heritage Group where proud to sponsor an illustrated talk by Derek Bent.

The talk was so successful, that every one who wanted to hear Derek couldn’t be fitted into the room at The Ring O Bells pub. There where 60 odd people in the room with at least a further 20 that couldn’t be accommodated.

So the talk is being repeated next Monday the 16th of September at 7.pm.

Excellent! Do we book tickets or just arrive? Thanks.

I'll try & get finished early on Monday & get along, as Derek is a real charcter of the waterways & has some good tales. He's nuts about his boats & it's wonderful to still see a L&L boat working on the L&L.

Cheers, Brian

Yes we are looking forward to it. His boats are tied up just near to where we moor on the L&L. I love the story about Viktoria when boats were once built inside it.
