"Human bones have been discovered in the burned out remains of a houseboat destroyed by fire on a canal in Oxfordshire.

Detectives believe the boat, moored in Wolvercote on the Oxford Canal, was set on fire several hours before the alarm was raised on Friday evening.

Det Chief Insp Andy Bird said the severity of the blaze had hampered their investigation.

Officers were "working hard to identify" the bones, he said.

"The boat has been badly burnt by the fire and so it has been difficult for us to carry out our investigation," said Mr Bird.

"I urge anyone who might have seen what happened or has information to help us with our inquiries and has not yet spoken to a police officer to come forward," Mr Bird added."
