Novice Boaty - maintenance of 1.5 BMC

Just bought a 1981 Harborough project so have lots of questions

 

but to start with....

 

What maintenance and frequency should be carried out on a 1.5 BMC ?

Hi

I would give the engine an annual service, what I do with all new vehicles etc is start a service record, an excercise book will do.

Note the hours on the hour meter, if you dont have one it would be a good first improvement project, and then service the engine fully. Keeping a record of all work done and when.

There is nothing particularly difficult or specialised in servicing a BMC 1.5 diesel engine. If you give it a full service now, along with doing whatever maintenance is needed in the rest of the engine bay you will be well set for winter.

However as well as the anual service I also check engine oil level, water level and drive belt tension before cruising, or should you do so, protracted battery charging.

We do have an hour meter but I guess one of the first jobs to do will be to re-wire the hour meter, so

that it only counts when the engine is running, not when switched to Aux ?!

There is an air philter assembly that is a push fit over the inlet stub, air box, philter, the whole lot. Originally for a 2cv I think. I will try and find the number.
