My JRT has fallen in a few times, fortunately whilst wearing either harness or lifejacket, so each time I've thankfully had something to grab hold of quickly. Not sure who panics most - her or us! The benefit of the lifejacket, particularly with a big dog, would be that it stops the dog from sinking out of sight whilst you and/or the dog figure out the next move. It might help save your back as well as their skin.

 

However, since reading recently about another boater's horrific ordeal in a lock culvert, it's impossible to know whether a lifejacket would help or hinder man or beast in some situations.
