Steel piling has its corrosion problems just like any other steel in wet/dry conditions. Usually they get problems around the waterline where there is oxygen availability.

However there is an anaerobic corrosion problem on certain circumstances to, which can be very rapid and not obvious to casual inspection.

As with much civil engineering, big factors of safety tend to be applied.
