Some of you may remember that while scraping rust off my bilge I started to get both water and diesel leaking into the bilge, as the slipway was fully booked, we decided to try to repair the leaking diesel tank and rusty weedhatch without taking Freyja out of the water.
We first tried to box in the gap between the weedhatch and the diesel tank, make a new weedhatch flange (as the old one had all but disappeared, we also welded some angle around the bottom of the tank. But the area behind the weedhatch filled with diesel and then started tracking down the heel of the angle and started to seep out of pinholes in the welds (caused by the presence of diesel when were were welding.
The decision was taken to cut out the three inner panels from the diesel tank, cut the weedhatch out and remove the deck drain channels (to allow better access), all with Freyja still in the water (3.5m deep)
I emptied the diesel tank and put it in containers and onto the tugdeck, along with generator, anchor, chains, sacks of wood and a full water tank. This raised the bottom of the weedhatch about one inch out of the water.
We made the new weedhatch slightly larger than the old one which gave us a lip to weld to from above the counterplate.
It seems we've finally cracked it.
