Hi, Sorry if this has been covered before but I can't find what I'm looking for using the search function. I'm in the process of buying our first narrowboat and have just recieved the paperwork from the broker and am very confuse about two points 1) Where the boat falls under the EU Recreational Craft Directive, it will be self certified by the builder and it is therefore impossible for any broker to guarantee that a craft actually complies. It then goes on about how we need to make sure it does. Surely the vendor has to make sure of this before they can legally sell the boat? and is it a certificate the vendor/broker should be able to produce prior to purchase? 2) a very long paragraph saying how they checked with Barclays Marine and RoyScot Larch "but these enquires are not entirely conclusive due to inadequate mans available to us for checking prior financial interests. ...... you may wish to make further enquiries Does this really mean they tried to find out if there is an outstanding mortgage on the boat, failed, so we want you to buy the boat but don't come back to us if there is a problem in the future. I know you will all have experience of the buying process and any advice, insight or reassurance would be greatly appreciated, Roger

I am selling a boat. It is under offer. Was surveyed last week. At survey it has come up that it is not C E Marked. I know, from my research, and from C E Marker professional advice that it needs to be, and is not exempt. It was bought from a boat builder as a sailaway in 2010. It was then DIY or private fitted and it was sold to me in Dec 2012. I have been advised that the DIY fitter, i.e. the previous owner, should have done the C E Marking and that he is the 'responsible person' and is negligent and that I should be able to recover any costs for C E Marking and remedial work to get the mark if he is not amendable to paying for it now up front, which I doubt that he will be. The original boat builders, who I have spoken to, have advised me that they only C E mark completed boats and not sail-aways. The have also said that he would have known that he needed to do it and about the legal requirements. Obviously, I am regretting that I did not have a survey done when I bought the boat but my personal circumstances were such that I needed a home very urgently and thought that a 2.5 year old boat would be unproblematic. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone offer any advice? Can anyone recommend a 'canal or boat' lawyer? Or a no win/ no fee lawyer who could help? And is everything that I have stated about legally correct?

Before embarking on installation of my AC system, if anyone could share any information on the following I would appreciate it. According to the RCD (recreational craft directive) is the following AC system acceptable? (I shall start form shoreline connection to AC outlets) Shore line connection plug fed into an RCD (residual current device) within 0.5 meters form the plug, the RCD shall be housed in a waterproof box next to the plug (a garage box). This RCD shall feed into two single pole MCBs, one connected to the diesel immersion heater, and the other connected to the inverter. Out of the inverter I propose to feed another RCD, housed within the electrical cupboard which shall feed two other single pole MCBs, a 10A MCB for a ring circuit of ac sockets (12 sockets, which I know is a large amount for one ring, but with 2.5mm cable and a smaller MCB this will reduce loading the sockets with the full whack of the 3KW inverter), and the other 12A MCB for a washing machine. My main question is... Does the galvanic isolator need to be connected at both RCDS or would connecting it to the first RCD ground the inverter through the galvanic isolator? Or do both RCDs and Inverter require grounding through the galvanic isolator. I will also be connecting the inverter to the batteries but that shall be for another day. Thanks, Will

Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows whether a home build boat needs to comply with both the BSS and the RCD rules? Kind regards, Boater 123
