  1. Hi MHS

The BSS has very little to do with boat electrical safety.

Is this the first boat your very good craftsman has fitted out?

Has he done all the electrical installation himself and therefore has a good knowledge of boat wiring and systems?

Is he conversant with the BMEA code for the wiring systems on boats, if not its doubtful the RCD certification he is supplying is of any value at all.

Is he a member of the British Marine Federation?

Is he writing his own RCD certification? Third party certification can be good if executed properly, though often it is not.

  2. We had a worrying ten minutes in this lock a few years back, 65 ft boat with bow "swag" fenders?

We had noted a problem from the downloaded (now defunct?) BW boaters guide that the lock and I think the next one was unsuitable for full length boats and particularly older working boats.

We were totally shocked to get in a jammed situation, it was a case of stopping everything while we worked out what to do.

With the tail of the lock leaking badly our situation righted itself with the jammed bow suddenly dropping a foot or so.

There are lovely Bat Boxes installed in the road bridge/tunnel immediately prior to the lock, perhaps a bit of cash spent on warning signs the like of Hurleston Junction would have been a better priority.

  3. I do wonder how the PLM accounts would deal with the fact that the company did not have a product to sell.

Not sure where you are going here, products would be Lake moorings and Le Bistro end of, quite simple really. Your remarks:-

Well, in that case how did we end up with the shower of intellectual bankrupts who seem to inhabit political and financial life?

Is well off topic, political and not needed on this thread

  4.

People like Mr Steadman don't support lame duck businesses like Pillings for personal amusement, or because because they feel sorry for the moorers.

    MtB

There is a fairly newly built (after Pillings) marina of similar or probably bigger size than Pillings that was rescued from financial disaster in recent years by a multi-millionaire. He bought it (and its sister) as a tax loss. No whisper of NAA not being paid there.

Have to say the marina I am referring to is also not in an ideal location, another case of "build it they will come", they haven't !

  5.

And how far away from insolvency is PLM too now, I wonder.

    MtB

I would think the fortune / demise of Pillings Lock Marina is in the safe hands of Mr Steadman where it has always been.

The Muppetry Management of the marina has allegedly never run it as a going concern, why would it need to when Steadman is there to pick up the tab?

  6. Will CaRT enter into a new NAA agreement with any business concern backed/owned by Steadman and

    P Lillie ?

From the Notes to the Abbreviated Accounts of Quorn Marina Properties 30th June 2012:-

    Quote

    "1.2 Going Concern

The accounts have been prepared on a going concern basis on an understanding that the parent company, other group company and M Steadman will continue to financially support the company until sufficient future rental income is received to repay them. "

A new agreement would not be worth the paper it was written on.

  7. Hi Forumers,

After a while boating, although through clenched teeth, I adopted myself this sour attitude. I became the boater I describe above. I got fed up of being pleasant, polite and getting no response and I became unfriendly myself

    All the best,

    Emilia

Ah, I don't recognise the boat name (nor does Jim Shead for that matter) but I'm pretty sure I've met you just the once.

Glad to hear you are changing back to your old self.

  8. Hi Sue

Keeping Up and Dor have it spot on.

Your engine has two modern alternators, a 50Amp and a 175Amp so split charging is not normally required. One alternator charges the start battery, the other charges the domestic bank. Providing the installation is good i.e correct size cabling and good connections then you can certainly keep hold of your money and get rid of the controller.

    Hope this helps

  9. If you have a battery management unit fitted whatever the make, how long has it/do you expect it to last before it breaks?

I'm still interested in the piece of kit we are talking about here, people have many different ideas of what a battery management system is, we could be talking:-

inverter, charger, combi , alternator controller, battery monitor etc etc

If as I suspect it is, an alternator controller then I doubt it is needed at all on a modern Canaline engine, no benefit what so ever.

So I would recommend to the OP just to bin it rather than being offered 30% discount again on a piece of kit you really don't need.

( Qualifier.... unless of course you have retained some sort of diode split charging system at re-engine time) Then you don't need that either!

  10. If you have a battery management unit fitted whatever the make, how long has it/do you expect it to last before it breaks?

I am interested in those running the engine once a day, you know the usual routine.

Maybe this should be posted in 'equipment' so if a mod wishes to move it then please do so.

Can you elaborate on Battery management unit please

  11. For some strange reason, the alternator B+ to battery +ve is exempt from being fused (according to BSS regs), and so is a battery +ve connection to starter motor, but they're the only two which are exempt.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't it the case that the exemption applies only because they each go through a main isolator switch.

Which is often overlooked, particularly the isolator to the secondary (house or domestic bank) alternator.

Direct connection I believe requires a fuse. No isolator is bad practice to say the least.

  12. The narrow boat industry is still on its knees.

Hudson may have eight in "the undercoat club", a similar set up below Atherstone had the same just before it ceased. Not that I am suggesting this is the case at all.

It is not rocket science to do a little research and make the obvious conclusions.

From Hudsons website he now finds himself condescending to build Semi trads, shock horror!!

Moreover he is offering fully fitted at sub £75k. And still a Hudson wtf !

This is not a business enjoying post recession order books, this business has its head above water (as far as I know) and trying its hardest to stay there.

I sincerely hope it makes it as there are not many left.

  13.

There are many hundreds of thousands of self-employed peeps running their businesses from home. Homes that have PP for residential use only, not business.

Would you have all these people stopped too?

I can see there is a difference, but it's hard to define!

    MtB

Mike, most private dwellings can legally be used for limited business purposes. A "Ladies that Lunch" establishment down a bridle way is a different matter.
