  1.

I don't intend to sell the boat within 5 years. However, I have no way of knowing what my needs are going to be by then, or even next year really. I haven't looked into this in detail, but I'd hoped that by building to BSS standards I'd be on the right track & it would be possible to employ a company/surveyor or whatever to do the paperwork & the manual & the RCD certification.

I thought if I could get that service for under £1,000 all in, then it would be worth it to me as a kind of insurance against having to sell. Does that sound like a plan or am I being a bit naive? Serious question - I honestly don't know.

ETA - have realised that sounds like I'm not bothered about blowing £1,000. Nothing could be further from the truth - I would just be trying to protect a much bigger investment. In fact the thought of spending thousands on something I don't know much at all about is the biggest barrier to this whole thing for me.

I paid about £550 for my inspection and RCD certification and paperwork that comes with it.He was a very helpfull chap and told me to make a few small alterations to vent hole size and a few other bits. I emailed photos of the changes and all was well.Build to the BSS standards like you say and your definitely on the right track.

  2. I completed my first fitout on a sailaway almost 2 years ago.Prior to that I had not a clue about most of what I had to do and remembering the feeling of fear and dread of the unknown as I stood inside the empty sailaway wondering how to batten it out ready for the spray foamers. But with the internet available and plenty of thinking time I managed a modest fitout. It can be seen on youtube under my account 'narrowboatmike' living on a narrowboat. I sold that first boat and about to take delivery of my 2nd sailaway.I hope to complete this one by early next spring and then after selling it have a go at a widebeam.Good luck with your build.Your sure to learn a whole bunch of new skills and knowledge along the way.If Feel free to ask as many questions as you need along the way.I will do my best to answer them as im sure many others on this site will too.

  3. I agree with carlt, free food from skips and biffa bins. Theres even a term for it, dumpster diving, I did it for about 6 months whilst living in a house.I even had to get large freezer from free-cycle to store all the food I was getting. Although some of the big supermarkets are impossible, smaller ones like spar morrisons and the co-op can be quite good if you check them out each day.Red biffa bins at hte back of small shops and bakers are a good sign and if there locked you can always buy a universal key off ebay which fits them.icecream.gif

  4. It on the bridgewater canal and then on to the Rochdale canal where normally you would have to book at 2 different

places along route. However I have heard that this may have changed and no booking is necessary. But just trying to make

sure.Guess ive plenty of time to contact the recipients of my waterways license.

  5. I'm sailing from Lyme to Todmorden with my second sailaway, the first one came by road a few years ago. ive heard that I no longer need to book to have locks opened etc.Does anyone know for certain? I will be travelling some time in February, many thanks , Mick.

Sailing in March not Feb, forgot about stoppages.

  6. Thanks Ally, ive tried many times with the search box but nothing comes up,I did find some thing on google though. The building and fitting of the boat are fine and I was aware of the 5 year "rule" with the sale of the narrowboat, however I wasnt expecting to sell it within 5 years, thanks, mick

  7. I am selling my narrowboat,I bought it as a sailaway and ive fitted it out and has a 4 years sefety cert and its under 2 years old,how much does an RCD cost and what are the options for doing it myself.I have someone interested in the boat but the marine mortgage people who they are dealing with want this certificate, thanks, mick.

  8. had mine from midland chandlers, but also seen plenty of them on ebay .normally come with nice labels so you choice which switch does what.I opted for 4 switch, horn headlight nav bilge

Thanks for that, just realised I may need four as I have horn, bilge nav side lights and headlight.

Have a look at what E.C.Smith offer, or just buy the individual switches & make your own. You can even buy switches with circuit breakers built-in.

Here is one I made with LED warning lights.

I had good service from Newlove Engravers who cut & etched all my control panels.

Thanks i"ll check out the link

  9. as a document required to support a licence application, a full DOC for the RCD is valid for 4 years. you do not need to get a BSC in order to renew your licence during this period.

if the DOC you refer to is only the Annexe3 that is issued by the shell builder, it is probably inadequate for licence renewal as soon as you make additional installations such as gas and electrics. Either you should do a full DOC before licence renewal, or you should get a BSC.

If you intend to sell the boat within 5 years you must get a full DOC. (DIY or via a surveyor.)

of course your boat should always comply with BSS requirements.

Thanks for that, a least im not under pressure to get the boat 'ready' before I renew the license, mick.

  10. Whatever stage it is at it should be compliant. The DoC is valid for 4 years. But if you have made additions since that DoC, which you have, it is no longer applicable. You either need to complete the work and issue a new DoC or, if you intend to keep the craft for more than 5 years, simply make it BSS compliant.

Thankyou for the info, I better get a bss examiner before my license is due for re-newal,mick.

  11. 12 months.

What do you mean "not at the stage to get a safety certificate"?

A boat doesn't have to be finished to get a BSC, it merely has to be safe.

If the boat isn't capable of passing a BSC, it shouldn't be afloat.

The boat fitting out in terms of electrics, gas, fire safety, venalation etc is just about finished but I havent done any work in the engine compartment in terms of platforms or protection from the moving parts from the engine(trad style boat).I just assumed this would have to be carried out to get a safety cert, mick.

  12. I bought a sailaway just under a year ago and it isnt quite at the stage to get a safety cert yet.I licensed the boat last year by sending the declaration of conformity to bw.How long is this declaration valid for ? thanks, mick.

  13. Thanks Chris ,they should do the job providing the price is right, there did nt seem to be any prices on the site, but I will check out the stores that stock that product.

They do look good , like you say not cheap, and if I did get one with a fan shurely I could not connect the fan and it would cook like an 'old fashioned gas cooker..

Never thought of ebay, think i'll take a look.

I just found a great supplier with with fsd and lpg jets with all its gas cookers and hobs and it in the town im moored in, its called premierange and I found it on ebay, thanks for all your help and support, what a great site this is.

We wanted a built in oven and ended up with one of these:

    Cooker Linky

Not at all cheap when bought new, but we found a second hand one on eBay for just over a hundred quid. We got the matching hob first (new as a christmas pressie) so were just lucky to find the oven. It does need a 230v supply for the fan...

  15. Inspect the data plate on the appliance and consult the instructions book.

It is a legal requirement to state on the data label the gas type(s) and gas pressure(s) any gas appliance is designed to work with. If there are multiple options the data label will say so, and the instruction book will give instructions on how to carry out conversion from one gas type and pressure to another. The conversion kit (if necessary) will be available from the manufacturer.

If the appliance cannot be converted to run on LPG it will just state natural gas (NG) on the data label. Most gas hobs I've fitted over the years have been convertible to LPG but I don't remember many ovens being so. But then most domestic built in ovens are electric. Beware most domestic hobs are not suitable for boats even if convertible to LPG as they lack flame supervision devices.

LPG appliances for boats are expensive because both the ovens and hobs are different from household kitchen appliances (hobs need flame supervision devices and ovens are physically smaller). This means tiny production runs and little economy of scale.

Thanks mike the boiler man,I just dont want a free standing cooker/oven especially now ive bought the unit to house the oven in.

Most (all?) Baumatic gas ovens and hobs come with LPG conversion kits and have FFD on all burners, as do those from a few other manufacturers

However, many domestic gas ovens these days require 230V for fans, etc. - hence on Batavia we have installed a small standby inverter, so that the oven can still be used if (when?) the main inverter fails.

    Chris G

Thanks chris,by the way what does baumatic mean? I am still going to try and find a gas oven that will do the job, there must be one somewhere that does nt cost a afortune.

  16. I realise I can find conversion kits for free standing cookers but I cant seem to find conversion kits for under worktop ovens and gas hobs on worktops. Does anyone know of any ovens and hobs with conversion kits for them.I do realise I can buy LPG ovens and hobs but they seem really expensive compared to buying a standard hob and oven, thanks , Mick.
