  1. "Gland packing" suggests it's a greasy gland.

But hanving never changed the packing on a gland, I don't really understand why you can't just turn the propshaft by hand to see if it's over-packed or over-tightened?

The idea of running the engine in gear to check it sounds a bit unnecessary to me,at least until the boat is back in the water. If the gland does overheat then just back off the adjustment a little. Why is there a need to do this out of the water?

Sometimes the answer to the question is one thing, but I think we also need to check the premise of the question.

Can an air-cooled Lister be run out of the water?

    Yes.

  2.

Why is it that every no hope total wreck of a boat is marketed as an ideal liveaboard????

Can they really imagine anyone wanting to live in what is essentially an open hull with a tiny little uninsulated cabin.clapping.gif

    ..............Dave

if I was in the market for a working boat, with adequate living accommodation and an engine room, I would. As yiu well know Dave ;-D

And as you well know, Heart of Gold was likely to be scrapped, if it wasnt for a stupid ejit who didnt know what he was doing....

The ejit has moved on, but Heart of Gold is still going strong.

How are you two keeping Dave?

(The ejit rummages at the back of the sofa, and gets out a tape measure and beer mat...)

  3. I agree with PaulC. the statement being challenged isn't factually true.

The boater does not HAVE to take a home mooring as stated to get a licence renewed. According to CRT they could instead choose to modify their cruising pattern to achieve compliance and demonstrate they have done so.

CRT do not go straight from 'no enforcement' to denial of a licence. They give the boater an opportunity to achieve compliance AIUI.

Not necessarily an easy option for all CCers I agree, but it remains an option available to them. Or are you saying that isn't what happens?

    MtB

The problem is though, that CRT arbitrarily move the goal posts, and try to change the laws. It is a slippery slope, which will see you having to moor your boats on thrir moorings soon, because you're not complying with CRT rules.

  4. A tentative connection might be the lesser used term 'jaag schuit' or 'jacht schuit', which came from the Dutch name of the towpath 'jaag pad'. The name 'trek pad' (the literal translation of tow path) is much less used in tge Netherlands.

'Jaag' translates predominantly as 'hunt' as in ' I hunt for for a living' ( a Hunter or 'Jager'), but also means 'to hurry along' or 'drive along'.

  5. There is a very low bridge just east of Hilperton. You may also need to check the height of the bridge at Netham lock.

as for lowering the pounds... most pounds are a bit long for that.

do you have room for a few IBC containers, or 45gallon drums, to fill with water as ballast. You'll need more than a few jerry cans.
