  1. Have you considered hiring from Anglo Welsh at Bunbury for a trip to Llangollen.  Before we had the boat we did that.

As has been said the only busy locks you will probably find are Grindley Brook (it just takes a long time when there are lot of boats as there is a staircase) and New Marton (I think because for a lot of hirers these are the only two locks they will do, so for most of them they will never have seen a lock before, and they are understandably slow.  By the time you get there you will be experts).

I would say it is a must to work your timing so you spend a night in the basin at Llangollen, I think you will find that quite special, and a real sense of achievement.

  2. The update on Kilby lock today, was not good news.  Next update at the end of the month!

    Notice Alert

    Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal)
Location: Kilby Lock - Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal)
Starts At: Lock 30 - Kilby Lock
Ends At: Lock 30 - Kilby Lock

Monday 17 July 2023 until further notice

    Type: Navigation Closure
    Reason: Structure failure

    Update on 21/07/2023:

We appreciate that there are a small number of boaters currently stuck between the unplanned emergency closures of Kilby Lock and Birstall Lock.

If any of the affected boats require water, there is a water point at Friar's Mill visitor moorings that can be used.

    Update on 21/07/2023:

The crane boat is now on site, materials are being delivered and preparations are being made to begin the extensive work required at Kilby Lock next week.

This is a complex job and unfortunately we do not currently have a time scale of when the works will be completed.

We will update the website by the end of July, as soon as we have more updates.

Received two emails from C&RT today.

    1) Fallen tree between Braunston Top lock and the tunnel, wide boats advised not to navigate dated today.

    2) Wide beam passage booked through the tunnel for tomorrow.

    Cheers Graham

I bet that will be the 14 ft monster that was moored opposite the Boat House in Braunston yesterday.  Presumably they went up the locks today.

Perhaps the same person that did for Birstall lock gates 3 weeks ago which also needed a crane boat to repair. They have slowly worked their way up through Leicester.

Well our plans look like they have been screwed by this.

We have slowed down on our way to Foxton, and will probably go down tomorrow, and depending on the update on Friday decide to turn round or not.

If it is good news on Kilby, then the limiting factor would be Birstall, but we would not be able to leave Kilby Bridge until we know Birstall is open or else we would not be able to get through Leicester, assuming the secure moorings in Leicester will be full and there is not really anywhere else safe to stop until the Hope and Anchor.  That means Tuesday through Leicester, but we need to be in Birmingham by Saturday, and that seems a push. Thoughts on if you can stop anywhere the Leicester side of Birstall?

Obviously if Kilby is longer then all bets are off and it is turn round and back the way we have come for the second time this year.

We have also been wondering is it was the same boat that broke both locks.

When we moored at Saul we used to do Gloucester docks to Worcester or Worcester to Gloucester in a day during the summer.  Had to make sure we were at the river lock for 8am to make it although the Worcester to Gloucester was always quicker as heading downstream.

Whilst I guess still doable, there are two hours less of lock opening hours now than there used to be.  I was just making sure that that the OP was factoring that in, you would not want to arrive at Gloucester after the lock closed on a Monday and waiting until Wednesday morning on the wall as the river goes into flood!

  6. In similar circumstances with rain and at the same time of the year about 8 years ago we ended pup having to stop at Upton and spending three or four days there while the river went up 10ft.  If you decide to make a run for Gloucester, assuming that you at Worcester now, I don’t thing you will get there until Wednesday, as Gloucester lock like the whole G&S is closed on Tuesdays.  Perhaps it is possible to get from Diglis to Gloucester lock in the 10 hour opening window tomorrow, but you need to be certain!  Is Diglis lock working ok now, it was broken last week?

    Only superceded by 5g routers.

I have bought a lot of pre-owned 4g, wifi kit from eBay and haven't had a problem yet, even the one advertised as parts only with no PSU worked fine. Tested ue and sold it back on eBay with a PSU for 3 times the price I paid for it ;)

Not saying there will be a problem with used, but it seems strange that you can’t really buy a new one if it is not an old model.  I will keep looking.

    B535 is cat 7

    B818 is cat19

    B818 is much faster 😉

    B818-263 is UK spec

Search around you will find a B818-263

    Plenty on eBay

Thanks.  All the UK supplied ones on eBay appear to be preowned, similar to Amazon?  Is this actually a current product or has it been superseded?

I take it back there seems to be one new one on Amazon, but £400!

I agree, I have the B818-263.  The internal antenna are very good, I don't bother putting up an external antenna, just have the router sat on a shelf inside the boat.

I am thinking about getting a router, Instead of just tethering to my phone.

A number of people are mentioning the B818-263 router, but as far as I can seen (on Amazon), these are an obsolete product or at lest one not available in the UK and what are being offered are used or as new non-UK versions.  Is there a particular reason for going for this router given you can just buy a new UK one?

What difference would I expect to see with a B535-232 which are half the price compared to B818-263 and are UK spec and new?

  10. 4 to 8 weeks is not really that long, so many more companies may be able to accommodate you, particularly early or late in the season.  But the two companies that come to mind, where you meet hirers doing long term hire, are Rose Narrowboats at Stretton, Rugby, and Canal Cruising at Stone.  When we were last at Llangollen, there was actually a Rose hire boat in the basin.

  11. The services are shut and have been vandalised so it is just a derelict dump at the moment.  There was a CRT update to the stoppage notice for their closure about a week ago, which suggested there may be some hope in the future when the surrounding area is redeveloped, that the services could reopen.

The picture of the Bridge attached

city cruisers of York was purchased by the Hornblower group in 2019. Pre purchase it looks like their boats were painted red. The new cycle way over the Ouse is recent as well

    IMG_2135.jpeg

Paint the hull fair enough maybe it needed ‘blacking’ but why change the colour of the stern hood from red to blue?

This is from July 2018, the boats were red then

  13. The photo in York looks fake to me.

At least some of the people on the trip boat would be standing up and looking at the train.

Also the trip boats there go like the clappers and hammer moored narrowboats boats against the underwater concrete edge, much like the “Shroppie shelf”.  That narrowboat’s front mooring line is hanging loose so the boat would be all over the place, those people would have difficulty in standing up.

I would therefore say that the trip boat has been inserted into the image at the very least, possibly the narrowboat as well?

This is good, innit!  "Oxford Canal (north) - narrow canal."

    "Widebeam access to........."

So much for having to book a passage.

    Sign at Braunston.

    IMGP8263.JPG

There are two of those signs, one each direction approaching Braunston Turn on the GU, they have been there a couple of years.  They are supposed to book the passage, I get regular notifications from the stoppage system about widebeam movements, so some at least do book.  Does not make it right though.

The Notifications for widebeam transits of Braunston and Blisworth tunnels is getting very frequent as well.

Thank you! Do you personally prefer Meadows over Locks? If so - why?

I would say it is personal preference, but Meadows works fine for us.  In Locks some of the pontoons are not full length, and some are shared, but it is cheaper.  Also in Locks the pontoons are steel mesh, which is not so good for a dog, in Meadows the pontoons are wood.  The biggest downside in Meadows particularly on the side furthest from the canal where we are, is the walk up the steep Bank from the car.  Also if it is windy Meadows is more exposed and it can be fun getting back in sometimes.

If you have not been there you should have a look round, and you can form your own opinion.

Arr… but if you are referring to the place by the Giraffe there is a sign under the Giraffe pointing left for 2 days and right for 14 days.

I shouldn’t tell you that if you don’t know because it’s my prime spot.

Thing is the sign is set back against the wall where one wouldn’t think to look. It catches a lot of folk out.

There is room for what…100’ worth of boats maybe, on the 14 days

It half stretches under the bridge.
Is that where you’re on a bout?

Maybe this is the confusion CRT are on about?

But I’d say turn it all in to 14 day rather than all 2 day (or 4 day or whatever they’re on about ).

I’ve had this conversation with a few people who think I’m on a two day mooring (and then they wish they’d spotted it).

I believe that was part of the area of confusion, and as of the 3 July those 14 day moorings have gone.

Not sure if it has already been posted back in the thread, but this is the CRT map showing the trial that starts on 3 July to 31 Dec 2023, for me with the exception of all the 2 day moorings now being 4 day this does seem to be an improvement.  Not sure why so many people want all the moorings to be 4 day.

There was one stretch in Birmingham if you looked at the sign one end it said 2 days, but the sign the other end said 14 days.  No signs in the middle to indicate where 2 days changed to 14 days.

Yep on the Main Line at the Old Turn End.  I must admit I thought the simplification was mainly about the 14 day moorings there (both sides) and the 2 pontoons at Cambrian Wharf that were visitor mooring while the other are all long term moorings. What I don't understand is why all the 2 day moorings have now been made 4 day, the majority of the hire boats and others passing through only want 1 or 2 nights.  We shall have to see how that goes I guess.

Yes and no. Thames boats yes, but visiting boats are recorded as boat name plus their registration number for their home navigation authority. So officially JennyB listed as JennyB72684. You don't need to alter your boat's name. No idea how they deal with sea boats with no registration number, especially if they are not SSR registered.

I thought that they treated the visitor licence number that you display as the boat name, but however it is technically done, as a boater you don’t need to concern yourself with this at all.  You buy a visitor licence, display said licence and you are done!
