We used to moor at the end of the pub garden about 40 years ago, once had a week's holiday moored there as the Avon flooded overnight, we had a line from the boat to the top of the pub steps and rowed across their garden to get off the boat.

They are new as an newly constructed flood safe ANT visitor mooring rather than a let’s say, a more basic pub mooring.  Same with the Angel Hotel at Pershore, and the one at the nature reserve upstream of Evesham.  To me it is good that ANT are increasing the number of overnight moorings.

  2. The ANT moorings are all listed on this page https://www.avonnavigationtrust.org/overnight-moorings/ they are all free except for Tewkesbury and Stratford, the bottom of the page has the links to pay for those, once you have moored, it is on a first come basis.  Tewkesbury is often full, there are not that many moorings, Stratford never full as it is all along the Recreation Ground, but in some place you will need to use pins.

The mooring at Twyning Fleet is relatively new, in the last 5 years, and is at the Fleet Inn a couple of miles from Tewkesbury.

The river festival has been cancelled for this year so nothing happening as part of that.

Yep, the river festival would have been last weekend, we were going before it was cancelled, which is why the boat is in Stratford at the moment!

John6767, good stuff. We are on a 4 night hire, so really wouldn't want to stop at Hopwood, Bournville *and* Gas unless we were just going up to Birm and back.  Sounds like we can bet on getting out of Alvechurch well before 5 and get to Birmingham for the night, and then on to CdeB the next morning.

Next Q for all: reasonable to expect CBT volunteers on hand for the clusters of locks coming down into Grand Union, and then back up when we hit Lapworth on the loop?

Then yes you need to go for Birmingham, then CdeB, then Hockney Heath or Warings Green, then possibly Hopwoold on the return.

There are often volunteers at Knowle and Lapworth. I would expect to be on your own for Farmers Bridge, Ashted and Camp Hill.

  5. Is your plan is to  stop at Hopwood on the first night and the Bourneville the second night?  Obviously Hopwood is close to Alvechurch but if you don’t want to rush then stop there, but then the next day just go straight into the centre of Birmingham, it’s only half a day anyway.  From Birmingham going to CdeB in one hop is a good plan.  CdeB to Hockley Heath is a good day, if you now have the time you could stop at Kingswood junction, or on the moorings near to the Boot a few locks up Lapworth. Rather than Hockley Heath you may then want to think about stopping at Warings Green, near the Blue Bell, instead. From there to Alvechurch is an easy day.

Well its pleasing to hear there is some enforcement going on in at least one place on the system. Here on the eastern K&A there has been none since Covid and piss-taking has been rife. I grant that the four boats that spent two years between them on the 48hr VMs here have now gone so maybe CRT finally noticed and sent an email or two...

Not really much need for enforcement in Ripon, when we were there we were the only boat and not sure if we saw any other boats moving on canal bit.  Whilst I have been to Ripon by car a number of times, I found visiting by boat an anticlimax given the amount of time and effort it takes to get there, but it is the end, so it has to be done.  One of the best kept services block on the system though.

There's good moorings in the basin for narrowboats and one other at the sanitary station basin. The marina is the better option if you want to stay for more than a few days.

Has that recently changed?  When we went to Ripon in 2018, there was no mooring allowed in the basin with the visitor mooring being on the approach to the basin next to a busy road.

We came down the Severn from Stourport through 2 locks. Had number taken but that is not recorded as a sighting. Bizarrely

I don’t believe any of the index number recording at the Severn and Trent locks, or G&S bridges go into the sighting system.  It would add a lot of noise to the system if they did in my opinion.  Perhaps at a few key points like Gloucester lock would make sense, but you don’t want lots of sightings in one day for a given boat.

Follow up to my original post.

I decided that I wanted certainty on my mooring in Lincoln, so I rang Brayford Trust, initially booking two nights, but subsequently increasing it to three nights due to the locking up times at Torksey Lock. The marina staff were very pleasant and accommodating.

As we approached from the west, we noted that there were no spaces on the CRT visitor mooring suitable for a 55ft narrowboat. At a push, we might have asked a couple of boats already moored there to nudge up a bit (there were wide gaps between the existing moorers which on occasion would accommodate a 40 footers, but we didn't see anyone aboard any of the moored boats).

The booked mooring in Brayford Pool is excellent. Central, great views with water and electricity. Cost of £16 per night.

We walked up to and beyond the Glory Hole. There were a few spaces there but, as far as we could could discern, only at the railings which had to be scaled (no mean feat for our tender age). Also a bit leery about the area, perhaps for no real reason, but sometimes gut feel is important.

Many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. It is appreciated.

We moored on the wall just past the small pub and a little grass/tree area through the glory hole.  There was at that time a gate in the railings, so whilst you did have to walk along the top on the wall on the outside of the railings you did not have to actually scale the railings.  If was fine for an overnight I thought, but for longer I think you will be more comfortable where you are.

  10. I have a VictronConnect MPPT and used the logic of I don’t want to have to use my phone to see what it is doing, so had a Victron display installed, but in reality I virtually never look at the display.  I possibly did not have it put in the best place and the display is very small and not that easy to see if your eyes are not great.  If I want to see what going on then either phone or iPad is simple and I don’t even need to get up to do it.

I don’t know, but been through twice this year about 6 weeks apart and had no problem in stopping there both times.

I can’t get on to read it,

could you cut and paste some of the article to give us a glimpse what they on about?

    cheers

I have no problem in seeing the article on the link provided above.  If you look at it you will see that is contrasts two sets of people, the one that the headline figures come from is a widebeam based in London, the other being Andy and his wife and their preserve business, based of course in the Midlands.

Having a day off for retail therapy at the command of OC Domestic tomorrow so will be venturing down the Avon on Tuesday. A few slots available in the Basin.  Boat is Anglo Welsh, Rowan 2 if you wish to offer words of encouragement. 😃

We are not going as far as the basin right now, going into Shakespeare Marina on Tuesday to go home for a bit!

Just to say thanks for all the knowledge. Currently moored in Bancroft Basin listening to a Bob Marley tribute act in the park opposite.

High spot of the day was sliding straight into a finger mooring without touching the sides with a crowd watching. Couldn't believe it. Pure luck but I'll take it. 😄

You will pass us, perhaps tomorrow, we are coming upstream and in Bidford at the moment.  It is still crazy busy in Bidford, I expect Stratford is too.  Roll on tomorrow and them all going back to work!

In general the river has been very quiet during the week, very few boats about, and lots of mooring space everywhere.  There is a decent flow on the river though, and in the narrow spots you will feel it.

You don't need to be registered with anyone. I used the address of a friend. This address doesn't even need to be near where you are; once you pick up your pass it's valid nationwide.

I recently became an old codger and got a bus pass.  By nation wide that is England or whichever UK nation you have got tgg by e bus pass from, so and English pass is not valid in Wales for example.  Also depending on the area you have the pass from there may be other benefits, eg mine is from Solihull so I get free train travel in the West Midlands area in addition to England with busses.  Interestingly the England scheme only allows bus travel up to 11pm, old folks are obviously not supposed to be out late, but in the West Midlands I can use buses up to midnight, and trains and trams until the last service of the day.  So you may want to pick an suitable council if you are registering as no fixed abode.

Apparently they've put signs now, although I didn't see any last time.

Looking through their website I see £12.50 a night quoted now, which would definitely be steep considering how awkward the moorings are. Shall find out next time what the current state is...

If you find anything I would be very interested to know, we just came straight through Tewkesbury yesterday.  I wonder if that is the reason that ANT have put the signs at the junction with the Severn, and so the ANT fee would just get you access for £6 and then £12.50 to these people for mooring, which to me rules that out except in an emergency.  If the lock is open when you get there I would rather go up the lock and moor there if there is space, then at least the money all goes to ANT.

  17. 24 minutes ago, Francis Herne said:

Unless something's changed again since last year, the moorings on the awkward wall past the lock on the Severn level are now controlled by 'The Merchants of Venice' (https://www.themov.co.uk/) at £6/night.

A few years ago they were owned by a third party and managed by ANT, then the owner pulled out of that agreement and they were effectively free, then in late 2022 the mooring rights were auctioned off. Apparently ANT also bid but weren't successful.

Tewkesbury is great though, worth stopping for.

    the mooring I mean:IMG_20240620_090112.jpg.13d5152fa41fb6f29eea153884b1872c.jpg

Interesting, not heard of them before.  So if that is the case and you don’t have an Avon licence you would need to pay them as well as ANT, so that’s getting a bit expensive and would not be keen in handing over money to an unknown organisation.  They don’t actually define which are their moorings.

  18. 7 minutes ago, Grassman said:

I didn't realise that. I've used those moorings as a stop off on my way up or down the Severn a fair few times and have never paid a fee. I've always thought that because it's below the Avon Lock it wouldn't come under the ANT's jurisdiction because it's not their waters.

ANT’s jurisdiction starts at the junction with the Seven, there are actually new signs there that state you need an ANT licence to pass that point.

The fees are here https://www.avonnavigationtrust.org/licences-short-term/ the £6 for mooring without an ANT licence on the Severn level is a bargain, as it is £5 to moor in Tewkesbury even if you have a licence.

In reality once I did phone the lock keeper at Tewkesbury once to check if there was space on the Severn level and asked if I needed to pay and was told technically yes I did but it was fine.  That was before you could do all the licencing online though, so I guess now you can’t use the excuse of it being past the lock closing time when you arrived.  I don’t mind paying, ANT is a small charity that maintains a fantastic river.

Worcester is easily (although quite tediously) doable in summer hours. Stourport non-stop is theoretically possible if you leave first thing, have a relatively fast boat and aren't held up at locks but I wouldn't plan for it.

If you go past Worcester, Camp House Inn just below Bevere Lock might be a good option.

Remember that spring tides over the weirs in Gloucester, about one week per month, may affect your plans.

    Some times:

October, strong flow on yellow boards, favourable tide from Ashleworth to Mythe Bridge. Flat out in a slow-ish boat.

Gloucester Lock in 0830 out 0840

    Upper Parting 0935

    Upper Lode Lock in 1200

    Upton 1310

    Diglis in 1550 out 1600

    Diglis pontoon 1605

Summer, slightly more flow than usual, comfortable cruising speed in a slow-ish boat.

    Upton 0940

below Diglis (waiting for traffic) ~1220

    Diglis pontoon 1300.

    (break)

    Diglis pontoon 1400

    Hawford Junction 1510

    Lincomb Lock 1720

    Stourport (river) 1745

The moorings at the Camp House Inn looked extremely dodgy, not sure I would fancy them in the current state.  I guess you could moor on the lock landing stage out of hours though.  The OP has not really stated what they are trying to achieve, is it get the Seven done as quickly as possibly, or how to plan more leisurely stops?

In August I am planning to cruise up the Severn from Gloucester Docks to Stourport. How far can I expect to travel on the first day?

We have just come up from Gloucester today, although we came off onto the Avon and are now at The Fleet Inn a couple of miles above Tewkesbury.  With the flow as it is was today we took about 4 hours from Gloucester to Upper Lode, if you want to gun it you could have knocked half an hour off that.  If you are continuing up the Severn the only place to stop before Worcester is Upton, but you can not guarantee being able to stop there, so to be safe turn onto the Avon and moor on the Severn level past Tewkesbury lock, there is a fee to pay to ANT for mooring there.  Altnativley if you feel you have enough speed to guarantee getting through Diglis lock before it closes at 6pm you could go for Worcester, with the option to stop at Upton if there is space.  It would be a long boring day, Gloucester to Worcester.  Check for any tides above 7.4m on the day you plan to do it as that may restrict your departure time from Gloucester.
