  1. Certainly looks like the Milton Keynes one.

Strange thing is that I know this patch well, and many of the boats on it, but think I would know if I had seen that one before!

I think it must be a fairly recent arrival in that area.

It looks to me that at the moment it will pump out fairly easily, but there's not a lot of margin if it goes in any further.

I don't know this area - could it be on the bottom already?

  2. Hi. I came to the forum for general info .........

    ...... Then i found this.

    The entertainment value is Priceless.........

You want entertainment?, go google "419 scam" - many you find just recount the trash that the scammers send out, but other relate the type of story that Biggles tells. 419 Eater is a good place to start - read the one about the scammer having to join the Holy Church of The Order of The Red Breast.....then there's the one I recall where the baiter conned the scammer into buying himself a new PC due to (false) virii (HERE on 419hell.com)

Disclaimer - you MUST NOT keep any drinks near your computer when reading these - I will NOT replace your keyboard/laptop/tablet if damaged by liquids (or any other PC-unfriendly means) biggrin.png

eta................and welcome to CWDF! .....and I found the 'new PC' link

  3.

Roxy it has nothing to do with eBay. look at the URL Its a clone website. Someone will be along to analize it better than I can.

......however, there IS a real eBay listing for it, at £48,500.

I lurve scambaiting, a most enjoyable pastime and I enjoy reading about it too. Rock on Biggles! clapping.gif

  4. As with everything I'm trying to keep the costs down and in the short term I'm happy to fit a 2nd hand one or a recon. I've made eBay my first port of call and typed in 'LRA 147' and had no direct results, just lots of Alfa Romeo 147 alternators which are not the same ones.

I believe the LRA147 was a Land Rover or Ford motor alternator of around 55amps. Is there a better term I can put into eBay to throw up some results, I can't believe there are none for sale on there.

Use the term "LRA147 -alfa" .....without quotes, with space after the 7.

Most of the resulting items displayed have LRA147 in the equivalents.

  5. That's the problem though and not wishing to enlarge this topic but to illustrate. We have local councillors asking their electorate about what cuts they should make to keep within Government imposed cuts and spending limits rather than either doing what they were elected to do OR (more to the point) open;y saying their task is impossible so they are unable to carry on. Then there are a variety of Social Services scandals where it seem clear to me that jobs were not being done as they should be because of lack of funds - no Director seems to have resigned, they mostly try to scape goat overworked staff. Now lets consider certain NHS senior managers. What about the Probation Service etc. That is before we get to Ministers and other senior Government office holders.

I would like to hope that when it becomes clear to a senior manager or director that the task they have accepted can not be satisfactorily done (for whatever reason) they make it clear what they attribute that to and resign. They should not keep stuffing their pockets and make excuses about doing the best they can - and so on! However it seems pocket stuffing is now more important than public service, ethics and so on.

IME - nor do they seem to be passing it back UP the management structure - or the more senior they are, the deafer they become!

    greenie4U!!

  6.

Apparently - a floating object displaces its weight in water; a submerged object displaces its volume.

oim tinking - shut the lock on a widebeam going down and there'll be less water in the lock than if it was a narrowboat. Going up, the widebeam will use less water to reach the level. ??

Nearly, it's displaced volume in either case = weight of displaced volume of water.

....and your 'tinking' is right, IMHO

  7. but the boats which don't go anywhere aren't contributing their part of keeping on top of weed control, keeping lock mechanisms free and functioning etc etc? Therefore the CCers are both paying for and contributing work to the effort of maintenance...

.....but the boats that don't go anywhere are keeping the VMs free for the CMers CCers.....tongue.png

  8. This topic has probably been covered so please forgive me. I want to discuss licencing fees and give me opinion on them. Firstly and this is just my opinion, I think if your on a residential mooring then you shouldn't have to pay as much as people who continuously cruise. Maybe a sort of sorn like you would a car. And then when you want to take it out the marina you buy a temporary licence. What do you think? I just dint see how it's fair for people to have to pay the same as CCers when you only use the network every so often.

    Thoughts?

With due respect, your opinion does not matter one jot.

The situation IS what it IS and ain't gonna be changed in the near future.

We could all find 'better' billing methods to suit ourselves (and not suit others) for all sorts of situations.

If you don't like it, don't buy a boat!

Blunt? yes, and sorry, I'm not having a pop at you - that's the way it is. ....sad.png

  9. I dont know that many boaters, but within the past two weeks I have been told by two boat owners that they are being claimed against by cyclists that have hit their boat mooring stakes in broad daylight. Both have said that their boats were correctly moored up ( I guess they were.I wasnt there ).

Is this a new insurance scam ? Or do we need warning signs when moored up to avoid having to pay claims.

Now, what boater would put their mooring pegs in the middle of the towpath?

Boats (and their essential mooring lines) are hardly invisible.

Maybe the cyclists should have gone to Specsavers. (or slowed down)

  10. A quick question.

If you have two cables connected to a 12v battery is there a quick and easy way to ascertain which is + ive and which is - ive?

(Apart from the obvious, looking how they are connected to said battery and what colour they are that is)

    Does this help?

    From Wikipedia:-

Automotive batteries typically have one of three types of terminals. In past years, the most common design was the SAE Post, consisting of two lead posts in the shape of truncated cones, positioned on the top of the battery, with slightly different diameters to ensure correct electrical polarity.

The "JIS" type is similar to the SAE but smaller, once again positive is larger than negative but both are smaller than their SAE counterparts.

    My bold.

  11. I plan to pressure wash it and re black it.

What is the best bitumen to use?

Do I need to rub it back to bare metal before blacking? No, just ensure any loose material is removed!

If so, do I prime the metal first? Definitely not!

How many coats do I need? Personally - three, maybe another on/about the waterline.

I am also planning on undercoating the top sides, it is currently in its red oxide.

Does this need rubbing back - Yes, may need another coat of primer. Do not leave too long before undercoat, some primers porous.

or can I paint straight onto it?

What is the best paint for this job?

Sorry stuck for time for more detailed reply, have put my two penn'orth in bold.

  12. From the moment I joined this forum, it concerned me that profiles could be viewed without signing in. I think, unless the person/member viewing your profile is signed in, it won't show you that they have visited or display their avatar. Obviously, it's an open forum. I don't think profiles should be open to all, but only to signed in members.

    +1

  13. Now is it me, or is there something amiss here? Pillings Lock have this boat advertised at £16,500 BUT there are two more ads on Boats & Outboards for the same boat............at £5,100?

OK, the OP has been in touch with the seller, so he knows where he stands, but maybe the OP could advise the seller that there may be something 'iffy' going on, like a distance selling scam, you know, the 'can't get there, pay your money, agent will deal etc??'

  14.

Quite. 'Hotter' is not the same thing as 'more heat'.

I hold that the amount of heat energy stored in the 30g or so of candle wax in each tealight remains the same, whether or not a flowerpot is involved in the release of it.

    MtB

    Absolutely!

I still remember the 100 lines I got some 50yrs ago for some misdemeanor or other:- Energy cannot be created or destoyed, only converted from one form to another!! (as per post #8)

  15. I have a telescopic mast for my TV arial. The recent wind it wouldnt stay in place. I tried screwing it up, but all I achieved was to snap the head off of 1 of the plastic thumbscrews. Basically (IMO) they aren't long enough to screw up tight enough, probably are fine in the summer, but not when it's cold. & being plastic instead of metal, just meh!

Possible alternative:- Pole Adjustment Clamps for Tents & Caravan Awnings (available in different sizes abt 18-32mm IIRC, eBay search "Pole Adjustment Clamps" )

  16. Wey looks worse than last time. On the gallery bit of the page it shows a sunk purple coloured narrowboat - looks like it's called "Seeker".

    http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/local-news/road-closures-surrey-rivers-burst-6461646

Although the name is partially obscured, from the reg. number, it is indeed 'Seeker':-

SEEKER Built by HANCOCK & LANE - Length 9.76 metres (32 feet ) - Beam 2.09 metres (6 feet 10 inches ) Metal hull, power of 30BHP. Registered with BW number 60042 as a Powered. Last registration recorded on 19/04/2008.

Makes one wonder why she sank, given that the area would be fairly busy, I'd have thought. unsure.png

  17. good night everyone!! im a new member herer and in the canal and river world in uk!! i bourght a 55ft narrowboat that was very damage.. well water damage

    .........

maybe someone with more experience could now whats wrong!!

    anyone can help??

    thanks lot

    gerard

Remove the dipstick from the gearbox and check the colour of the oil. I would expect you to find a creamy emulsion as water is likely to have entered the gearbox and mixed with the oil. Change the oil and all sould be OK - Simples! tsk unsure.png

FYI - these boxes 'fail' in forward gear (to get you home)

  18. Any ideas as to why my wall lamps don t work ??

im a total dunce at electrics . To me its a dark art and i just know someones going to suggest a multi meter ..........

    cheers for any thoughts

Sounds like an earth/negative return problem to me which has got progressively worse, affecting more fittings.

Multimeter? Yes, if you know how to use one (you can still read 12v even when there is a poor/HR connection),

but in this instance a 21W bulb with wires, croc clip & probe would be a better test tool.
