Didn't the service moorings use to be over that side until BW let the building to become a café?
I don't know, but it's a shame they let it go if it was.

Noticed this morning that there was a narrowboat moored between Poolstock 1 and 2 locks.
This is the pound that is usually low due to a leak.
I hope that it is moving soon.
Indeed, that's not the best place to moor. If it's unattended there's a good chance that if grounding doesn't get it the kids will!

Hillmorton does surprise me as being one of the old "flagship" waterways spots (I've read in an ancient guide book something along the lines of it was where BW used to train groundskeeping staff on how to make lock sites look nice?) and yet having no mooring space for the elsan/bins and people regularly using the lock landings above the bottom lock as visitor moorings! Because they need a sign to tell them not to!?
A few years ago I seem to remember struggling to find both somewhere to tie up and also the correct route to the Elsan at Hillmorton. The couple on the boat outside the cafe were not too pleased when I stumbled onto their domain, but I suspect I wasn't the first to make that mistake.

Also, don't dump it in the cut.

Thought I had read somewhere that the actual band Gairport had pulled out of live gigs including Cropredy. I may be mistaken.
You mean Fairport? Cropredy is Fairport's festival.

This is the latest update from Fairport:
Hello Fairporters,
We are writing to you with news about Fairport’s Cropredy Convention 2021.
Following PM Boris Johnson laying out a four-step plan for easing restrictions by midsummer, we can at last give you an update on Cropredy.
If Covid-19 is under control it is hoped that large outdoor events can take place this summer so we are cautiously optimistic our festival will be staged, as planned, over the weekend of 12-14 August 2021.
There are still a number of factors to consider of course. Firstly, the four steps are entirely dependent on getting the coronavirus under control in the UK. Secondly, we remain anxious (as do all festivals) that we are still unable take out cancellation insurance that covers Covid-19. However, the festival industry is actively lobbying the government for help in underwriting this. Hopefully we’ll have some good news in the Chancellor’s budget report next week.
The government has said that 21 June is the earliest date that restrictions will be completely lifted. As Cropredy’s dates are later in the festival season, there is every reason to hope that we can all look forward to meeting in the field in August.
Safety is our first consideration (in fact, it was the main reason we postponed back in April 2020), so there may be some mitigation measures in place and we will be liaising with the responsible authorities throughout the summer in the build-up to the festival to make Cropredy as safe as possible for our festival-goers, staff, artists and local residents.
As far as planning the festival goes, we haven't taken our foot off the pedal in our preparations for August and we remain committed to presenting a wonderful weekend of music. The fabulous line-up remains unchanged and 2020 tickets will be valid for 2021.
This has been a unique twelve months by any standards. Our hearts go out to our friends in the extended Fairport family who have lost someone close and we shall remember those who are no longer with us when we meet again in that very special field.
We look to sharing a weekend in the country with you all in August. Meanwhile take care and stay safe.
Very best wishes from Gareth and all of us at Team Cropredy!
PS Tickets for Fairport’s Cropredy Convention 2021 are still on sale... -

How does the Government’s roadmap apply to boating?
We believe that the Government’s roadmap applies to boating in England in the following ways – please note that this is subject to further confirmation.
There is no change until Step 1 part 2, potentially from 29 March, when it is anticipated that the official stay at home order will end but people will be encouraged to stay local. Limited local boat movement may be possible but you should avoid travelling if your boat is not located close to where you live, and only those living aboard are permitted to make an overnight stay.
In Step 2, from no earlier than 12 April, holiday lets are expected to reopen. We believe that at this point cruising can be done freely and overnight stays on boats and holiday hire boating will be allowed, as long as you are one household or support bubble. The boat movement suspension will be lifted (with boats required again to move every 14 days).
In Step 3, from no earlier than 17 May, indoor mixing on your boat will be allowed with up to six people or, if it is more people, two households.
We are awaiting further guidance on advice for Wales

Truthful tho.....sometimes it pays to be direct
The RCR engineers I have come across I certainly wouldn't describe as "muppets". Some may be better than others but I think a generalised comment like that is both unkind and unjustified.

Coincidentally, I was watching this video earlier today:

That's what I'm using at the moment. A 20kg bag is only lasting 2 days. Minus 6C tonight...
Same here: 1 coal scuttle (10kg) of Excel each day.

I also dismissed it a phishing/scam. Another CRT cock-up! Why not send it from a proper CRT email and put a link to the survey in the text?
This survey's results will now skew towards the more naive and credulous boaters, undermining the validity of any results.
I completed the survey and can assure you that I don't consider myself "naive or credulous". As I said before, after initial suspicion, when I looked at the content of the survey it was clearly the standard CRT questions requiring no personal data.
I do, however, agree that it has been poorly presented and should have been better notified.

What questions were asked and did it ask for personal details?
Just the usual satisfaction questions. No personal data other than the usual optional gender, age band etc at the very end. I wouldn't have submitted any personal details.

I have received and completed it. It did look different to usual but the content looks genuine.

so, long story short, lets say you have a calorifier tank of average boat-size (no idea what capacity of ours is), how long would you guesstimate to produce a tank of hot from;
a) engine running whilst cruising
b) immersion heater
c) central heating
just after ballpark figures from your experience, ta.
a) 2 hours
b) 1 hour
c) 1 hour (Alde to calorifier only)

Thanks alot both. As far as I can tell the policies are fairly similar. Craftinsure come out a fair bit cheaper, and I've been with them 4 years so will probably stick with them.
One thing that impresses me with Craftinsure is how little, if any, my premium has changed each year and has even reduced before without my intervention. It's one of the few insurance policies that I just renew each year and never bother to shop around.

This is what happens when people get wound up about boats moving
Good evening all, we have had a report of wire being strung across the canal - this is not acceptable behaviour boaters & users alike still have to make essential journeys on their boats!! I'm thinking of trying the plastic film mentioned in several posts but am concerned that double sided tape is used to secure the film to the inner wooden frame....do you gave to remove the tape every year and isn't this very difficult and messy? I wonder if magnetic strips could be used somehow and left in situ for each winter ?
I use the Tesa Moll film kit and the tape peels off easily without trace.

Those cling film or perspex secondary glazing ideas don't really work if you have windows with a hopper opening along the top, as the stays for the hopper in the open position project too far into the boat even when the window is closed. Any good ideas for getting round that?
The hopper stays on my windows simply unscrew.

Starting tomorrow, our contractors will be onsite between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal to undertake works that will help us to explore ways in which we can safely allow boat movement through the affected area without destabilising the embankment, slipped material within the canal or the above gas main.
A further update will be provided by Tuesday 20 April.
Update on 07/04/2021:
Investigations are now complete between Bridge 38, Black Road Bridge and Bridge 39, Hollands Bridge on the Macclesfield Canal and our teams have found the culvert has failed and requires replacement.
Our contractors have already started onsite carrying out a fish rescue and removing a third party owned wall to allow access to the site.
Over the next coming weeks, we will be establishing a safe, controlled working environment to create a dry working area and managing water flows by installing pumps over the culvert to be able to remove the existing culvert.
Our contractors have committed to working seven days a week to be able to re-open navigation as soon as safely possible. Whilst there is a considerable amount of work that is required for navigation to resume, we anticipate works will be complete by the end of June.
Your nearest water points are:
Downstream - Bosley Services
Upstream - Near to Bridge 15, Brownhills Bridge
A further update on progress onsite will be provided Wednesday 5 May.
