I wondered whether somebody had bequeathed money for the creation of that winding hole and therefore it was named and a sign erected.
That would make sense.

No, we are discussing an anonymous rumour allegedly from someone in an unspecified marina.
I don't believe it for a minute. The Ribble Link is being shut next week, but that happens every October to April.
Precisely. Sounds utter tripe to me.

Some of those are old plans discussed 25 years ago.
Severn to Thames
Transfer down the GU
are two that I remember being mooted.
Nothing new really
Perhaps not, but may have increased interest now due to the focus on climate change.

A better option would be what a Cornish farmer did a couple of years ago and cover it in slurry.
Or this:

There is a possibility that he was descending the lock in reverse, having ascended previously to moor (there are moorings above there and Castlefield is often full below).

Heading up so not a cilling. Perhaps the water flowing over the top gates overcame the well deck drains and entered the cabin.
That seems the most likely cause, unless something got snagged.

£18m to reline the lune aqueduct think it could have been rebuilt for less....
£18m wasn't just for relining the aqueduct, a very long section of canal around Bolton Le Sands had significant repairs too.

They will be announcing on Monday, 28th June whether the festival will go ahead this year.

I've never had an issue in or around Manchester during my many visits over the years. As others have said, incidents can occur anywhere and the "towpath telegraph" can make them a no-go area.

Oh, OK.
Not unreasonable as it's not a self operated lock, CRT work it for boats coming through.
We saw a yacht sail through it last year! They had a broken engine so were coming into the marina for repairs and had to very delicately use mostly furled sails to get into and through the harbour and lock.
Lock 7, into the lower basin, is now operated by the marina staff.

The telemetry at Glasson Basin is on lock 7, the one that drops you from the canal basin into the working harbour on the River Lune.
It's only seagoing boats that use it.
The telemetry is on lock 1, Lodge Hill, at the top of the flight. There is a manual reading recorded for lock 7.

But it all looks different when you are travelling in the opposite direction.
Absolutely, but you're still going through the same places. Not that there's anything wrong with an out-and-back trip, but cruising a ring is more interesting in my opinion. Having done both these trips several times I would choose the Cheshire Ring for an interesting family holiday as long as you are prepared to spend most of it boating. There won't be much time for cycling though.

The Cheshire Ring is fine for a week's holiday as long as you're happy putting in the hours. We did that when our kids were a couple of years older than yours on a week's hire and included the Upper Peak as well. Chester is a great trip but it means that you'll be repeating your journey.

Hello,
I am currently looking at buying a 62 foot narrowboat. I am struggling to find any mooring availability with marinas too small or currently full. I have my name on a waiting list.
Does anybody know of any private moorings that may be available or where I might look to find them?
I have looked on the CRT website but only small boat moorings available.
Many thanks!
Andy
Try Glasson Marina:

Another comment which might still be relevant or might not -- last time we went through Salterhebble in a 57' boat there was a *lot* of water fountaining into the lock from a leaky top gate; in a 60' boat with bow towards the cill this would have filled up the well deck pretty damn quick, there was far too much for most drain holes to cope with.
Not a problem if you have a tug-style bow where it'll be like water off a duck's back, but we didn't. So since we were going down, said water just cascaded across the stern deck, tried to wash the stern rope overboard to commit suicide around the prop (fixed that, obviously), and filled my shoes up with water. Could have been much worse...
Exactly my point in post 4

The last time I went through that lock those top gates were leaking from the intersection at an alarming rate. Great care was needed to avoid swamping the boat.

I’m guessing the building is the YMCA? We’ve moored alongside that a couple of times in the past, but haven’t been for a while since it became Castlefield Marina, despite it only being 4 miles from our mooring.
There is no way I want to get there, ready for a bite to eat in the Big City, only to find nowhere to park.

There's two of them actually. We used to call them the tuning fork arms.
You can also moor on the towpath above Dukes Lock, which is CRT waters rather than Bridgewater Co.
Yes, they can both be seen on the photo that I linked. I have moored against the high wall on the junction to the basins; it's not ideal but possible. Perhaps that will be out of bounds under the revised rules.
-
On the last couple of occasions that I have been in Manchester mooring has been a struggle at Castlefield. It looks like it is set to get worse with the new restrictions. Here is a photo of the Staffordshire Arm:

The old Alde is excellent as a secondary heating system to accompany a solid fuel stove. It's definitely worth investigating the fault and, if a repair is viable, trying it out before writing it off.
