  1. I have had a Vodafone 3g Dongle for nearly 2 years and find it has been very good but email was a problem until they launched vodafone 360 which has been without problem. A 3m USB extension lead gets the unit close to a window which can make a lot of difference - I have no reason to change and find that I have good or better connection speed than others on different networks. Each provider produces a coverage map on there own websites which may assist you if you know where you are likely to be based for more of the time.
  2. There is a job opportunity for the right person to work as crew on a 250 tonne grain barge in the Northwest. The job involves: • Working as mate for the ship canal and river estuary passages to load. • Working as a ‘stevedore’ for the three mornings while the cargo is discharged between passages to load. This involves the removal of the timber hatch boards and the sweeping out of the hold where some of the cargo has been left behind by the grab. The pay is on a ‘per tonne carried’ basis but as a guide it roughly works out at an average of about £8/hr on about 28 hrs worked per week, (some weeks pay more than others depending on the number of tones carried. The tonnages are set to rise over the next 12 months. With the job comes the opportunity of accommodation on the barge, (not shared). This is more basic and functional rather than romantic but very usable. This is a real job on a commercial barge grain traffic on a freight that has been running regularly for over 20 years. Some aspects of the role require hard graft and others require an understanding and experience of boats and boat handling or an ability to demonstrate a willingness learn the skills necessary. If you have any questions or if you are interested in applying then please send some form of CV covering relevant and other experience and/or some details about why you would want to do this job and your availability to vs@michaelcarter.co.uk There is also a position for a qualified skipper coming up soon on this freight - again apply to vs@michaelcarter.co.uk
  3. In principle I agree - but it is more sympathetic to traditions than some restorations I have seen.
  4. It depends what you want, if you are happy with PVC - We had a set made up by a tarpaulin manufacturer in Liverpool which are excellent. All 'welded' (no stitching), We had some very peculiar requirements as the set i wanted are not fully traditional but covering an under cloth conversion. The job was perfect in extremely heavy gauge material and about half the cost of quotes for other welded sets, the cost reduction was in part if i was happy to wait until they fitted the job in, which they did within two weeks! The company was: Del Tarpaulins Ltd - www.aandjbennett-tarpaulins.co.uk Unit 39, Seymour St, Millers Bridge Ind Est, Bootle - +44 151 922 9461
  5. This is not correct. The sevener 'Ash' is the one at Norton Canes which used to be on the moorings at Cowley below Benbow Bridge, the one at Denham is not Ash and its true name was not known but Roger W was told it was Ash and so called it that. Once he was corrected he remaned it 'Ash 2'.
  6. QUOTE (Mike C @ Jun 7 2009, 03:54 PM) * Today moored here are two Yarwoods barges, two big Northwich motors, a Saltley Josher, a big Woolwich, a wooden horse boat and a Roger Fuller tug. - But where? Tim Tim That was not even a challenge for you! Mike
  7. Tempest (30 years ago) were working with 3.5 BHP to the sq foot of surface area with a maximum water capacity per square foot of 0.5 gl (ie approximately ONE inch of thickness per square foot of surface area) this is a calculation that is still used today by some Japanese engine marinisers. Whilst some threads on this post have been alarmed by the size requires, the calculation takes into account that the accumulated heat needs to be lost even if the external water flow reduces. - Imagine running hard in deep water on a warm day and then tying up to say wait for a lock, or at a water point, suddenly the water through the tank is reduced (engine revs reduced) and the water passing the external surface has also significantly reduced or stopped. I hope this helps
