Many years ago when we had a part share in a narrowboat we broke down at the bottom end of the Marple flight of locks. Being unable to repair the fault
myself help was needed and we were given the number of a mechanic from a fellow boater. On finding a phone box, this was in the late 80s/early90s and I
had yet to enter the mobile age, I was able to make contact and he said he would be with us in the hour, which he was.
The problem was I was down to my last tenner and I had no cheque book, just my hole in the wall card. It was one of those situations when I thought my
wife had some money/cheque book and she thought the same of me. I explained the situation to the mechanic when he arrived and asked if he would be able
to run me to a cash point as and when he completed the repair. "Don't myther about it" he said and he got stuck in to repairing the boat. On completion of the
work 1-2 hours later it was time to settle up and asked again if he would take me to a cash point. Having spoke to the mechanic about where we were
heading for he asked if we would drop the money in at his boat which was moored at Disley when we were passing in a couple of days and that we would be
able to find a cash point from the top of the flight. He did not even take the £10 as part payment saying i might need it for the pub. If nobody was on board
the money was to be left under an oil can under the rear deck. As it happened when we arrived a couple of days later he was there so we could square up.
It was a lovely trusting gesture and one which I never forgot and if we were passing would call in to say hello.
As I packed in boating in the mid 90s I lost track of the mechanic but was hoping to bump into him or perhaps someone who new of him or his
whereabouts when i was at the Whaley Bridge waterways festival a few weeks ago, but to no avail.
I just wondered if he was still trading in the area and if so how he was doing. He may well be retired now. I can remember his last name as it was Senior, the
same as mine, but to my shame I cannot remember his first name but between my wife and I we think it was Les or Len. I notice one or two members give
that area as where they are from perhaps you can help.
Regards Gordon.
