  1. Well there we were out for our usual walk with the dogs today down by the Keadby and Stainforth. Lots of boats coming and going between Thorne and Keadby Lock as there has been for a few days now. First boat comes past and everyone waves and says good afternoon, second boat draws level and the couple just turn their backs on us! Now I know some people like to keep themselves to themselves but a little wave and a nod would have been fine - no need to talk is there? I have to say thats been the first time ever we've been snubbed by a narrowboater! Well really!!!!

    There are some very rude people around. How about this for an example;

We were cruising on the Leeds Liverpool in a hire boat. We were dropping down the locks at Barrowford and in the pound about to start the approach to the next lock which was full of water.

A middle aged guy appeared and started to close the gates and began letting the water out. We protested strongly saying this was a waste of thousands of gallons of water. The air was blue I can tell you and my son could happily have filled the guy in.

His answer was that we had to give way to him because he was private and we were visitors!!!!

Unbelievable, the height of rudeness. He had a strong Scottish accent and I suppose I should have said he was the visitor, if you see what I mean!!! When he came through the lock his wife shouted an apology to us and said her husband was an ignorant B.....d! We should have got his number and reported him. Do you know a couple like this?

  2. Brilliant - and great pics - its the unusual that makes boating fun don't you think? It brings back memories of Trent cruising in the late 70s from my hometown of Lincoln - I remember the Brayford Pool when it was full of sunken barges, enjoy the trip.

Yes a great adventure, but don't mention sunken barges, the poor guy will not have enough spare undies to see the trip out!

I will have pleasure in showing all this to my father, he was a Trent River Pilot for 20 years, retiring in 1988 although he only sent as far as the old Spillers Mills at Gainsborough.Happy days.

  3. While we are on the subject, a couple of weeks ago we bought an LCD TV + a hard drive recorder, great, then we added satellite ( Aldi, £64.99) works a treat only thing is we don't seem to be able to record satellite. Can anybody point me in the right direction I've tried all combinations of scart connections, or maybe it's not possible. Thanks

The Aldi Satellite sounds good. Do you just connect it up and off you go or do you have to subscribe to some service provider?

  4. Yes you can claim housing benefit for help with licence and mooring fees. This applies regardless of the legality or otherwise of your mooring. There have been two appeals (that I know of) on this issue, which concluded that housing benefit would be payable.

Here are two links regarding the appeals - it may need quoting at them if you do wish to claim - the initial reaction is often "no" however this is incorrect.

    Hi Ronie

    Absolutely brilliant.

Many thanks and everyone that this applies to should get a slice of the action asap!!!!

  5. I go up the L&L quite a bit, but have almost always had a crew, when single handed I've managed to follow other boats through, I did do one easy swing on my own coming out of Skipton (Leeds Direction) by the hotel which was pretty easy, as it has a long offside area to pull the boat along but had major problems just above Silsden as it was a bigger bridge, farm traffic etc, and pulling the boat with the bow rope from the open bridge kept pulling it into the bridge, kept getting stuck, so lots of fending off. It is also a sod to get shifted at the best of times, particularly with hot weather causing metal to expand and be stiffer than normal.

So any advice as to technique on this stretch with these particular bridges would be appreciated. I'm particularly interested to hear how people have managed the big bridges such as Bradley that tower over the boats. The issues seems to be that pulling on the bow rope when you're on the bridge pulls the boat ahead but also towards you and into the bridge structure.

I've read the posts about long poles and working from the towpath with ropes so you pull the bridge back after steering through, but thats not going to cut it on the heavy bridges, or the power operated ones where operation is on the offside.

    Matthew

Firstly, have you checked your insurance policy to see that you are covered for single handed operations?

I am well familiar with the Leeds Liverpool Canal and must say that I would not attempt to operate the bridges singlehandedly because there are clear risks, not least to yourself, but also to others. If single handing I would, where possible wait for other boats, press gang walkers/locals into helping or just be prepared to wait around a while.

I have seen a swing bridge being unlocked, the boat used to push the bridge open and then a rope from the stern tethered to the bridge and used to close the gate on passing through. Not every bridge would lend itself to this as the bridge needs to be able to ground itself on opening otherwise it can swing back and smash into windows etc!

Take care but remeber dangerous practices can work for a while but is the risk worth taking?

  6. I must have missed the post in which he laid out his circumstances before writing mine - but then in part that was my point: those who chose to malign Pot Noodle were equally ignorant.

    Hello all.

Thank you for your replies. I don't feel maligned at all because the question was hypothetical.

I am fortunate enough to have a manageable self employed and pension income at this time but circumstances can and do change and one day I want to live permanently on a narrowboat.

Lets be clear there are many genuine unemployed people as there are genuinely sick people and some of the points made acknowledge this. i am sure that unemployment and longer term sickness can be a miserable and depressing existence for most which still carries a stigma for many.

I have the answer to the original question which was broadly as I thought.

There is life before, during and after work!

  7. No

If u become unemployed u get another job and pay your way !! Unless you are unfit thro ill health or some other legitimate reason u earns ya keep.

I left school at 15 with no qualifications and have never claimed a bean in 38 working years.........I am no superstar but have had in the past worked for peanuts rather than so called sign on...............

Spot on Mr Smelly. I have worked since leaving college aged 18, several different jobs, some poor payers and paying loads into the system, even at the higher rate of tax at times and currently self employed just getting by. Oh yes I have filled my tax and NI pot quite nicely with about 6 weeks sickness in 33 years graft. But are we mugs?? I do begin to wonder at times !

  8. A similar topic came up once before, couldn't remember her name then, but..

Mavis Mogg used to turn up at Worsley every year, see would tell your fortune by by looking at your tea leaves or consulting the entrails of some unfortunate creature..

On the grounds that 'There is one born every minute' that occupation always seemed to me to be the perfect 'little earner'.

Thats spot on, something with no liability or comeback!

By the way Mandy they are advertising for staff on the Barton Turns site (I forget which shop/restaurant?) Do you fancy earning a few extra bob there cos it would be very handy!

By the way do the DSS pay your mooring fees?

  9. It is on the starboard transom which happens to be under the bathing platform so without the boat out of the water you cant see it.

Thank you for clarifying that point.

Can we have a poll on this, How normal is it to have it under water ?

  10. I am loving  living on my beloved 'Don't Panic' and I also really appreciate how fantastic Barton Marina (T&M) is. But every time I go out, I just want to keep cruising and explore. The problem is I have a loan to pay off and I need to eat. Has anybody come up with any cunning ideas on how to earn money without joining the ranks of the wage slaves again? (Not that I'd mind too much, but I can't find a job either!) Any suggestions, sensible or otherwise would be most welcome.

Barton Turns, isnt that the posh Marina.

That must cost you a lot ???

In these tough times why not let out a bunk or two to some less fortunate soles?

If you are short of cash but want to do more cruising why not become a Continuous Cruiser then?

    Problem solved in both respects!

  11. Probably not.

You would be hard pressed to spot our CIN number with the boat in the water. We have seen it so know its there but it is located so you cant see it whilst in the water. The second one is well hidden as well.

    Thats interesting!

They say the number is normally on the starboard transom but you say it is under water???

Is this normal or have you got too much ballast in ?

  12. There must be hundreds of boats out there (built since the RCD era)where there is no HIN/CIN.

Why not play spot the CIN next time you are at a show/rally ? You will be surprised.

Should you buy a new/second hand boat if not marked?

  13. Those conditions may well be unlawful however, which is why it would be worth running a copy of the agreement past Trading Standards. This has happened with caravan and park home sites and the OFT have ruled out a lot of their practices, which were similar to those some marinas still operate. Among the things the OFT outlawed were the right of the site owner to take commission on the sale of a static caravan, and the marking up of services supplied by third party maintenance people, e.g. plumbers etc. There was also a ruling against the terms and conditions set down in the mooring agreement for Thames and Kennet Marina by Trading Standards some years ago but I forget the precise details.

Good point. Is there anyone out there who has challenged a marina in this respect?

  14. Hi

Good man you are obviously extremely inteligent............

    Hi Mrs Smelly

Thank you for your kind observation.

Well, I would not say that I am extremely intelligent. I like to think about planning ahead and keeping an open mind.

I once asked my Grandma what was her secret of a long life (in her nineties) to which she advised me, hard work, keep your bowels open and trust in the Lord! Marvellous.

By the way, i hope you don't mind me asking but how did you arrive at your name? Just wondered!

    Cheers

  15. I would suggest you raise the matter with your local Trading Standards. They will be a part of your local authority. It is without any doubt a restrictive trade practice that should be challenged.

Most Marinas have pretty onerous mooring terms and conditions and if you have signed up to the same then you will either have to lump it and hope they do a good job or remove to another marina where they have a better track record.

Before doing this check the prercentage that they take as this can vary. I have seen reasonable monetary amounts right up to a whopping 30%!!! Yes 30%. I would also look for a Marina broker that has a good website with plenty of pictures and PDFs as the web is a great medium. You will normally get a period of free mooring when you put your boat with them.

    Good Luck.

  16. Hi

Hopefully you will be fully aware of the Recreational Craft Directive regulations re part completed/owner fit out boats. If you plan to sell up after five years then you should be Ok. But if you plan to sell before the five years is up be very afraid. The men in grey suits cometh!

I know a few cases of boaters who went down the sailaway route intending to keep their boats for the longer term only to find that a change in circumstances (eg loss of job, ill health etc) has meant they are having to give up their boats early. They are having an awful job selling their boats because the surveyors are not happy with the lack of papwerwork, CE marking or lack of it etc etc.

Tread very carefully, but good luck in whatever you decide to do.

  17. Following a long thread discussing what was going on at LB last year, this post was made by a new member on April 1st (?) this year.

    QUOTE (alan1 @ Apr 1 2009, 03:58 PM) *

I am the managing director of Liverpool Boat Co Ltd and Collingwood Boat Builders Ltd. It has been brought to my attention the discussions taking place on this forum about two of my companies. To all whom it may concern Liverpool Boat Co Ltd has simply been mothballed for a number of reasons, none of which I wish to disclose. I would like to assure every one on the forum that no customers or suppliers have lost any money due to Liverpool Boat Co Ltd's business activities and in fact the phones for Liverpool Boat Co Ltd were left on for 12 months to take care of any outstanding issues.

This would suggest that Alan who was/is a director of both companies should be able to answer your questions via Colingwood Boats.

Here is a link to the whole thread LB discussion link

    Roger

    Many Thanks for that.

  18. When liverpool Boats stopped trading where did all the paper records/technical boat files go?

I know that Collingwood Boats are now building but I don't think they took on the files (I did ring them recently and they didn't seem to have a clue what I was talking about!!)

    Any ideas folks?

  19. After the winter when I first filled the tank the water came out brown, but I flushed it through with Milton's, as David suggests, and part filled and emptied it a couple of times and the water is now perfectly clear. I'm sure my tank does need repainting but it can wait until the end of the summer, if we ever get one!

Edited to add: Vactan rust converter is OK for use with potable water systems before the blacking and might give the recoat longer life. Clicky You can buy small tins of tank blacking at most chandlers specifically for this job.

If you are going to paint it use the proper stuff, nothing less. You can also fit an inline filter too.

I have heard good and bad experiences with liners. Any experiences?

  20. Were hoping to go on Sunday. We do not moor their yet but we're in the process of getting our first boat offer accepted etc. We're going to moor our boat at Mercia.

Can't wait to get our boat now we're counting down the days.

What boat are you getting and are you buying it from Mercia New and Used ?

  21. How is it we always end up on the toilet subject?

We use cheap bog roll from morrisons and try to use facilities wherever possible.

Thank you all for your honest answers, amusing and most helpful. I will invest in a bucket too then!
