  1. hi, Spares mostly available and one of the best starting points would be Phil Trotter at RW davis, Saul Junction. Relaible? Yes Service intervals? 100- 200 hours or annually at least depending on useage and how particular you are. Easy to do and relatively cheap as there is no oil filter! . I would always use a straight 30 oil without detergent additives i.e not XHD 30 again due to no oil filter.

  2. the buzzer is controlled by the gauge. The gauge should have a red line on it and the buzzer should only come on when the needle gets to the red line. if the buzzer is on at other times then the gauge is US. Speak to Beta marine 01452 723492. I think they will confirm this and also that the gauge will still be indicating correctly

  3. I'm getting rid of the tiny old Lucas alternator on my JP3 and want to replace it with a man-size 90amp Leece Neville. There's very little clearance for a drive belt - the old alternator was driven from a pulley behind the flywheel using one of those leather link type belts which was the only way to get a belt past the flywheel and engine bearers.

I want to run the new one using a poly-vee belt direct off the flywheel, fabricating a new alternator mounting plate. Is this likely to throw up issues? Will the flywheel surface be true enough to run a belt? At the moment the engine is not running so ought I get it running to check the trueness of the alignments before making an alternator mount?

    All advice gratefully received!

Without a doubt, use a flat multi v belt probably 8pk, straight of the flywheel diameter. A vee belt will work also but can wear quite quickly and does not have the same contact area as a poly vee. You might struggle to find a poly vee to fit the leece neville. if you do, call (pm) me we have them (8pk) which will fit.

  4. Brand new UK made RN DM2 £18995 complete with 5 year warranty

I notice that both Ruston & Hornsby and Russell Newbery are still in production, I haven’t been able to find much information about the former, except that they are now produced by a well established Indian company, called Greaves and that there is an agent in the UK called Longboat Engineering. The agent has a web site but with practically nothing on it.

I understand that Ruston & Hornsby, at least originals, are a relatively popular choice for narrow boats.

How do these new versions stand up, are they as good as the ‘originals’, do they look, feel and sound like the originals, I mean, if you had one would you feel as if you had a thoroughbred all-be-it built recently or have they used modern materials that make them look and sound like a copy?

I can’t find a price for the Ruston & Hornsby but I have seen figures of £20K+ for the Russell Newbery?

  5. May I try?

A slow revving engine needs a bigger prop, and this requires deeper water. Canals are not dredged very often, so the big-propped boat tends to drag along the bottom.

There's nowt wrong with the engine. The problem is undredged canals.

Whilst I do not disagree that there is inadequate dredging, there is no point building a deep draughted boat knowing that lack of dredging is a problem and then complaining about lack of dredging. If you are building a new boat and want a vintage style / slow revving engine of the russell newbery type etc there is no necessity for it to be deep draughted. No one has mentioned using a different Gearbox ratio. A new RN DM2 can be very succesfully propelled by a Standard 19" x 14" prop with a 1:1 ratio gearbox. Even smaller dia is possible if a 'compensating' (larger blade area) prop is used. (jonathan Mosse discusses this type of prop in this months WW).

  6. Thanks, Richard. I had read that Willow Wren had taken them over, but I could not find their (RN's) web site.

Does this mean a new generation of Willow Wren hire boats fitted with RN engines?

Actually, Yes!! We have a new Shell ordered from Brinklow Boats, a 64ft Tug style Trad. This will be fitted with a DM2 and available for hire - indeed it already has it's first booking and does not yet exist anywhere other than on paper!. The shell is scheduled for delivery in Feb and should be completed by end May or June. The boat will be named 'Warbler' which was the first Willow Wren boat and had a DM2.

The website is currently being moved to a different host but the existing host company are being very difficult about it and have blocked the site in the meantime. We are available by phone on 01327 700023 or 07812039110, email russellnewbery@aol.com

  7. looks like a crown narrowboat. advantages minmal cost, allows more engine movement and softer eng mounts used mostly on Lombardini engines whicha again are cheaper than most. disadvantages if one breaks the other will be destroyed usually. Generally trouble free. IMHO neither good nor bad just different.

  8. laminated every time, it's stronger than toughened, cheaper and easier and quicker to source.4mm whilst lighter is double the cost of 6.4m laminated additionally will give better sound insulation. Std glass is dangerous and should not be used in any application where a person might be injured by it if broken.

  9. good to see that not being in posession of the facts has not prevented the formation of an opinion

BW do not own the bridge. It is owned by Punch Taverns.

BW are not paying for the demolition

BW are only facilitating the closure at the request of punch taverns to allow the demolition by Punch Taverns as they, BW, are obligated to do due to the dangerous condition.

Punch taverns have decided to demolish it now as it has become dangerous/ or the danger has been proven to them by their own recent survey.

They have not demolished before now as it was not dangerous until now - aparrently.

The closure may not last for the whole 10 days and if work is finshed sooner it will be re opened sooner.

This closure is not down to BW, the timing of it is not their choice

  10. the hinge will almost certainly be found within the Albert Jagger website. As for saving the hinge i would give it up and get new hinges welded on. they are held in tight enough to break off - do you think you will be able to get them out?

  11. hi,

water bugs were built from 1/8th plate. It is highly unlikeley that you will find one that does not require extensive plating as they are prone to corrode from both inside and out. we have seen many of them here and all needed plating.Do not buy one without a full hull survey. Plating costs are at least £130 per foot.

    Dave

  12. from direct experience:

Springer rebottoming £130 per foot. + two weeks dry docking at £300 per week Bottom blacking no more than £8.00 per foot all in. 40' springer rebottomed, engined, painted, fitted out etc and ready to cruise £12 - 15k sale price dependant upon the usual criteria for quality of fit out engine etc etc.

Good little boats that are no more susceptible to rust than any other but due to their relative low cost can be neglected.
