Russell Newbery  DM2, year of manufacture unknown, Engine No. 22B (or E) 1392.

This engine would at first sight seem to be equipped with a hand start mechanism right down to and including the starting handle. However there is no connection to the engine and the decompressors seem to have been disabled. The latter would imply that this is how the engine was built rather than a component failure.

The engine is fitted with a Lucas starter motor and has been an entirely reliable starter in all conditions.

My question are (1) Has anyone come across an engine set up thus?

                               (2) Has anyone reinstated the hand start?

                               (3) How much grief is involved in getting at the mechanism?

I would add that I have the experience to address the problem and a machine shop to back it up but forewarned is forearmed.

    22 E was built in March 1985.

    Hi Folks,

After the replacement/refurb of injectors to cure a "white smoke" issue - which did not cure the smoke problem, I now find I have a knackered engine - head gasket, bent conrod and two pistons corroded by water ingress.

It looks like I may have to get a refurbished engine!!!!

I can get the cost of a likely engine replacement but does anyone have any idea of the likely cost of removal of the old and installation of the new??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Buy a new kubota engine from kubota dealer and swap all of the Nanni mariinsing parts over, cost of swap less than £1000, budget extra for new hoses etc, may as well while it’s out.  Also clean and paint engine bay while empty, much easier than working round the engine. Do it yourself or pay someone £400-£500

That is a Kelvin Model P4.  Not seen by many as their greatest engine for canal use. Quite successful in the fishing market though.

Now the Kelvin Diesel Model J, the Model K and the Model L are different animals altogether.  Sound great, are prettier than the Model P, much more interesting than a Gardner or a  Lister  and more likely than the promise of a new RN, sometime.  Maybe.

What do you mean when you say more likely than the promise of a new RN sometime. Maybe ?

  4. Hi I can make these pipes all I need is either your old pipes or the fittings from the ends and the length of the pipe. I have the easiest way to measure the length is to thread a thin copper wire into the pipe from end to end then pull it out and measure it, the pipe I use is 6mm x2mm steel injector pipe

  5. Ours is 22E 1517 and am pretty sure it is circa 1991 - does that mean 122 engines built over 5 years? The original invoice is on the boat, but I'm sure it had a Southampton address on it.

Met Graham Pearson while cruising this summer, so guess I should have asked him!

1517 built 1991 for Stoke on Trent boatbuilders. One of the last of 169 engines built by vero engineering in Southampton.

  6. Ok here goes,

We have built and sold 4 new engines and refurbished (totally) 4 more. We are currently building one new engine and one refurb, all DM2's. We are also re building a DM3 for a customer. And have a further DM2 in stock awaiting refurbishment and a new DM1 single cylinder in stock complete and ready to go. We have parts on hand for many more brand new engines and all parts including gaskets, are available for spares for all D series engines and virtually all parts for the national D series. We do have a national D3 that needs a home.

All our new builds are just that, all brand new parts. Our factory overhauled engines are completely overhauled with all parts checked and replaced with new as necessary, as a minimum we fit all new bearings, pistons, liners and valves and guides. No 'paintbrush' restorations here Sarsons!

New cost including new prm260 is £18995.00 with 5 year guarantee.

Overhauled engines are typically £10,000to £15,000 with 3 year guarantee

No one else can offer this level of warranty nor is anyone else able provide the spares backup of new spares from stock other than the modern high revving engine suppliers.

Weight of a DM2 complete with PRM 260 is 13 cwt £(1456 lbs)

Always happy to discuss customers needs directly on 07812 039110 or answer questions about all things RN. We have a very extensive archive of information on all RN's back to at least the early fifties and all of the original drawings and build sheets for the same. We also have lots of info on where engines currently are, none of this info is computerised(yet) but is searchable by engine number.

We are building a boat with a DM2 in it which will be in our hire fleet when complete. The shell is from Simon Wain and the fit out will be to match this exceptional shell

    Think that's everything for now!?

  7. I'll buy it then.... Always wanted a 2L2!

    :)

MtBThe other boat being the boat that sells the witchcraft stuff?

Have they sold their wonderful Dorman D2? mad to replace in my view!

    MtB

Mike, call Bim if you are interested in the dorman. It's available.
  8. I know it has been discussed here before but we now have available a purpose bult Disabled access boat complete with Lift, ramps and hydraulic steering wheel steering. Please see our website www.canalbreaks.com The boat is called 'beatrice' and is available to hire.

  9. I am repainting my boat. I discovered that Masons is not trading, what is being labelled as Masons is not the quality it used to be. This makes me sad, because I've always painted my boat in Masons Red, with good results and not much fade off. The last paint job, however, faded like never before. So I am asking you...what is a good substitute for what Masons was 20 years ago?

classic coatings will supply proper masons p type enamel call them on 01509844151

  10. I thought it better to revive an old thread than post anew. Would you be concerned by the apparent state of this engine bay and bilge (hope the pictures post okay). We are thinking of making an offer and would also get a full survey but any initial thoughts are always appreciated. Has been on brokerage just over 3 months. 2000/03 Mike Heywood.

First do not stress about it too much. Use a recomended surveyor - Trevor whitling of Whitling marine 07767 888255 is very rigorous and fiercely independant.

either make a provisional offer taking into account the total cost of the survey inc. drydocking etc. or make an offer pending survey results and ask the vendor to pay for the survey that you arrange. i.e offer the asking price pending survey results if the vendor pays for the survey. If the survey comes back good job done. If not renegotiate based upon the work required to rectify the survey issues.

with regards to the photos it looks as though the uxter plate is rusting due to condensation but without a survey you are just guessing as to whether or not it is serious. as a minimum it needs to be de-rusted and painted preferably with the engine removed to faccilitate access to the base plate also. this would cost between £400 & £600 dependant upon how long it took. Whenever We sell a boat we always have the boat surveyed and then correct all of the issues identified. We also pay extra so that the survey liability can be passed to the buyer.
