  1. Hello I'm a member on here, also a BBC producer working on a new series about British boats for BBC2.  I'm producing the episode dealing with the history of narrow boats.   I'm looking for an example of an early back cabin to film in - any ideas?  I used the cabin in Sunny Valley in Stoke Bruerne museum on a previous canal series however I'd like to use a boat on water this time.   I'm also looking for an expert/historian to talk about Fellows, Morton and Clayton (potted history).  Any ideas much appreciated.

    Thanks, Stuart

  2. I've been looking for a small narrowboat for quite a while now but there aren't many on the market at the moment.  I previously owned a Springer Waterbug and loved it but now I'm looking for one upto around 30 feet.  Maximum length of my mooring is 32ft.  Anyone  seen anything on the market.?   I've looked at a Midway 235, any other suggestions upto 20k... ? Any help much appreciated.

  3. If there is no more serious rain over the weekend the Soar will be fine. There are traffic lights at Barrow deep lock - if red stay put on the lock cut. As you are new to the river before leaving Barrow lock walk the 50 or so metres down to Barrow bridge to work out your strategy for going through it - it has very low sprung arches and there is only a few metres to get lined up for it. I try to get as far upstream as I can before putting on power and turning hard as I enter the river stream - see aerial via this link photo. There are traffic lights at Bishop Meadow Lock - again do not pass at red - the flood gates at the entrance to Zouch Cut may well be closed which means you can be left in a very difficult position!! Otherwise there are no other major problems. Just remember going with the stream you will have less control.

Have a good trip - Richard

PS enjoyed the trip down the Trent the other night

many thanks Richard very useful info. glad you enjoyed the programme!

  4. I used to be moored ar Shardlow Marina some years ago, and it so happen's I will be moored there again in a week or so. I personally prefer to be on the river's than the canal's and the Soar is just fantastic. My experience is that it is usually calm other than in extreme weather condition's. I can't see you having any problems this weekend. Are you not familiar with the Soar? Why I ask is because your boat is already on the Soar at Barrow.

I'm moving a new boat from Barrow. I do know the Soar well but uncertain of the current levels. Also I was told that the locks have been locked at Redhill due to flooding - something I've never experienced?

  5. I'm planning on moving a boat from Barrow up to Sawley over the weekend, so just wondering how high the river is at the moment. Also, if the river is in the red is it a very bad idea to go on it, - and will the lock gates be locked anywhere along this route.

    Any info and experience appreciated.

  6. Hi Larry, Ive got all sky channels here at home, but no Channel 980...theres lots of other channels close by showing ''The Great British Story'' but none that I can see of the River Trent :(

Shame as I would love to watch it, maybe I will find it on BBC Iplayer later or even tomorrow.

    Thanks for the info

try just punching 980 in and not using the epg (programme guide) in theory this will get you to bbc east midlands region also on 977 yorkshire and lincs. hope this helps

  7. I'm seriously thinking about buying my old boat back. I regretted selling it for quite some time and i've kept in contact with the new owner who hasn't enjoyed boating a much as thought he would... has anyone else out there bought the same boat for a second time?

  8. It always amazes me how many boats on the duck have 12 photo's of dirty washing up in the sink and laundry all over the place. It looks so bad.

Three weeks ago I put my boat up for sale on Apollo and sold it within 48 hours for the asking price. In a tough market this wasn't luck. I thought about a broker but I gave it a shot on my own. I spent considerable time marketing the boat much like a house, considering the right price, took plenty of quality photos and plenty of relevant information in the write up. After 4 calls and one vieweing (the first) I'd taken a deposit.

I have to agree with your thoughts on Apollo, so many people take poor photos and haven't even tidied up! We're talking about thousands of pounds. Tens of thousands. Make sure your boat is spotless inside and out when viewing and complete all the niggly jobs, however small. A buyer needs confidence in you and your boat...

  9. Kilby Bridge Lock and Double Rail locked are only going to be open between 8am and 5pm next week - they are going be manned by BW during this time and padlocked outside these hours.

Not sure why - but for anyone leaving Crick etc and coming this way I thought I would pass it on.

    Maggie

i had trouble with teenagers at double rail lock about a year ago - throwing beer bottles etc near the boat. they're prone to vandalism in this area, so that maybe the reason.
