Just interested to know why the section north of Kibworth Top Lock on the GU Leicester Line has broad locks? Were they originally narrow and widened, or have they always been broad to accommodate Trent river craft? I understand the GU was created as smaller canal companies merged - is this part of the reason?
Many thanks.

Lock 54 isn't named in the Nicholson Guide. Canal Plan calls it Stratford Lock elsewhere it's called Oliver's Lock. Can anyone confirm the name?
It's the one in between Warwick Road Lock and Maidenhead Road Lock.
Thanks

I read somewhere this is the shortest and oldest tunnel on the system. Is this right?

I've been told the Shropshire Union Railway and Canal Company bought up a load of battleship grey paint after WW1 - is this really the reason?
Your thoughts?
Thanks

Audlem’s lovely.
I can’t resist buying a couple of books from the Mill each time I pass.
There’s a decent book swop in the service block when you get to Norbury.
So you’re yet to do the Tyrley flight?
Enjoy, it’s all pretty along there.
I can’t remember, is it from there that it’s lock free til Weeton Aston? 18 mile.

Any idea what the average time it would take a Shroppie fly-boat to get from Ellesmere Port to Birmingham? Are we talking 24 hours? Did they ever carry passengers or was it just perishable cargo?
Thanks.

I've just used it and, whilst the 'loading' circle comes up, you can still click over the options and it will continue to plan your route.
thanks you're right. weird that the loading circle just doesn't go away. doesn't normally do this.

Hi I'm trying to plan a journey / route and site seems to be endlessly loading? I've tried on a couple of laptops so I know it's the site - and not my computer. Anyone else had problems recently ? It happens when you put in your starting destination.

Hi,
I'm currently waiting on lock down to be lifted and CRT to ease restrictions - so we can start making the second series of 'Canal Boat Diaries' with Robbie Cumming for BBCFOUR. This years trip was meant to start at the beginning of April. So I'm interested to know - will you start boating as soon as lock down is lifted - or will you wait a while? Could it be a quieter summer on the canals? Be interested to hear your thoughts.

Part of the confusion comes from the fact you will never traverse all the Lapworth locks in a single passage since locks 20 and 21 are parallel and on diverging routes.
There’s no doubt that lock 2 is the top lock of the Lapworth upper flight and lock 27 is the bottom lock of Lapworth lower flight. So there is a maximum of 26 locks in the flight but as above you would only traverse 25 when travelling the length of the Stratford Canal. We can therefore say that 24 is definitely not correct.
To suggest there are only 18 requires lock 20 to be considered as not being part of the Lapworth flight (and that it’s a solitary lock called Kingswood lock). That’s pretty meaningless from a boater’s perspective given it’s proximity to lock 19.
So from the boaters’ perspective it’s either 6, 19 or 25 depending on your route but as recently discussed by the handful of remaining active members still interested in discussing canals the designation of flight names probably had more to do with how the canal company managed the flight than it did with the experience of the boater.

Hi many thanks for this - so we're sticking to the Stratford - so how many on this route? 25?
-
Hi does anyone know how many locks are in the Lapworth flight? There's conflicting numbers on the net. In my Pearson's Guide it's also a bit confusing... 18, 24, 26??
Thanks!!

Wasn't woodsheaves originally supposed to be a tunnel or was that cowley that was going to be a longer tunnel but the ground conditions put paid to the idea?
cowley was meant to be much longer - but the earth conditions were too unstable and they opened it up

Are you including the Llangollen which is actually part of the Shropshire Union ?
In which case you can add Ellesmere Tunnel (87 yards long), Chirk Tunnel (459 yards long) and Whitehouses Tunnel (191 yards long)
good point - no not including the llangollen just the main line 66 miles.
-
Hi just fact checking - is Cowley the only tunnel on the Shropshire Union or are there anymore I'm missing? Were there anymore that have been opened up?
Thanks.

No. But it is tiny, in case you haven’t seen it before!
Only seen it on Google street view. All looks a bit sad which is a shame.
GU Leicester Line - Have the locks north of Kibworth Top Lock on the Grand Union always been broad locks?

thanks for the help with this one !!
especially: makes sense now !
Leicester to Market Harborough was the remnants of an unfinished canal that should have reached Northampton. It was intended to convey barges between the two river navigations.
