  1. Ashby canal is certainly good.

You can get a CanalTime / Tillerman boat from a nearby base (not that i would suggest using them!).

Oxford way is faily minimal effort too - with a few locks - but nothing like the birm-wocst.

  2. I too, couldn't get logged on when the site was down, but stranger still is that I now have to log on every-time I now visit canalworld.net. If I click on Blogs first and then click on either back or home, I have to re-log on yet again.

    Is it just me???

This problem occurs on various forums (mine included) and only affects a select few! Therefore I tend to believe it must be the settings on the individuals computer.

Trying clearing your cookies and re-booting IE - it often does the trick.

  3. I am a newbie here so be gentle with me

I am trying to trace a narrow boat that i missed when it was last for sale

    can anyone help.

Try looking around the various websites and forums on the web.. someone is bound to have heard of the boat =)

  4. I work with a widescreen, 17" laptop, screen resoluton 1280X800.

I realise this is not a 'standard screen' but the heading is still half the screen.

Also would it be better if the top line, search etc. was below the heading.

Image is better but it still needs to shrink when you view the shop pages.

Things like that are fine for a mainpage 'splash' but rubbish for everything else.

  5. Like Mr Polley said..

If i click GPS i want to see the GPSs..

I DO NOT want to have go through yet more menus..

WHY? -> Because I may not KNOW what manafacturer I'm after or what model number.

And back to the point... I really can't see how the website is aimed at canals..

  6. I loved looking at some great pictures last year.

Even if not judged, perhaps a folder to store decent or interesting photo's we can simple scan through.

It would be great to be able to view the photo's on the forum like the messages - but all in one location.

    Cheers

    Neil

So a bit like the gallery....

  7. Website looks okey.. the main graphic is good for the main page but on shopping broswing pages users *do not* want to have to scroll down miles every time to just see the products!

Also as a sailor so I know some of the prices.. it is looking all a bit too expensive!

Oh yeh and if you want to advertise it like this on a canal forum.. i'd include some canal stuff :)

And loose the google checkout. There are *MANY* good banking facilities for online shops... using google doesn't look all that pro in my book. And if I came across it.. would think twice about buying!

  8. Sorry to hear about your incident.

At least you climbed out to jest about it.

I'm sure you won't want to hear about this (horses and bolting stable doors and all that), but

others may benefit from our experiences.

I have a cheap-ish waterproof watch and always put mobile phones, remote control car keys, camera, etc

down the steps in the cabin when onboard.

If you need your mobile phone with you or up on deck so you can hear it, aquaman/aquapac make good and relatively inexpensive cases.

Aquapacs are certainly very very good.

We use them on the beach for VHF radios...

But also I use a camera aquapac.... and so far my camera has survived the great barrier reef and the sea off Florida... although it is always a bit worrying jumping into water with your camera....

  9. Sam many thanks for your reply it has certainly opened our eyes to the point that we are now considering cancelling the holiday later in the year. Can I just ask which base you took your holiday from?

    Many Thanks

    Hi.

If it is your first holiday.. in a way i would say go for it as you will not have expectations.

What I forgot to say that we took this holiday after having boated for many years.. including with private share boats.. so maybe our expectations were higher? - although this does not excuse the engine problems - there again these are probs. very rare!!

Although on the flip side of the coin... if you can... I would suggest going with someone like Viking Afloat or Alvechurch Boat Hire (run by same company).... as I only have good things to say about these companies.... they are perfect... and their fleet is very nice!

(we moved one of their boats for them last summer - brand new fleet that they are introducing.. which is very nice indeed)

Can't remember the name of the base... but it is close by to the Ashby Canal.

One other very bad point about this base was that they had left everyones credit card details over the seats in the 'hut' where you check in and where the staff 'hang out' - a bit worrying seeing as everyone (especially staff) had access to all your details.

  10. Just been reading the forum with regards to Robin Hood boats and are now a little concerned. We have booked a holiday with Tillerman boats which we believe to be linked with Canaltime has anyone got anything to say about them good or bad!!

    yes they are CanalTime boats.

You will turn up to a CanalTime base and take a CanalTime branded boat.

We did (on the cheap... never again) last year and I think it broke down at least 5 times... and had to keep meeting the mechanics along the way for various things.... mainly oil!

It was getting through it like mad.... (LOTS AND LOTS!) then on the last day the engine basically ran out.. as it was just running straight through into the bilge...

We ended up walking the boat back quite a way to a boat yard where we could be picked up by the CT people.

We were not impressed... and the runners of the base couldn't give a dam.

    To summarise..

Not good experience with CanalTime / TillerMan for me i'm afraid.. although I'm sure some people have had great trips with them.

ps. (I am used to a private share boat too...)

  11. The barman told me during the winter on an average night with a band they would take £500 pay the band £200 so takings of £300.

Since there has been no band the takings average £70

I suppose they will blame it on the smoking ban :o

Seems quite a lot to pay a band in a pub for a night......

Would be suprised if it is that much IMHO

  12. I'd go for a 35-38HP and a well matched prop, especially if you plan to drive a hefty domestic alternator or Travel Power..

We have just done the Nene and are now on the Great Ouse cruising South between Ely and Cambridge.

We sheltered from the worst and the Nene was far worse than the Ouse. You will need to punch the tide at Salters Lode.

We have a Beta 43 on our 62ft but no Travel Power, as we have a separate genset.

I agree with the man above :o

  13. Stratford Canal, by Wootten Wawen to Leighton Buzzard. I figure there will be plenty of services as I go through Braunston, Horton, Cosgrove. But I'll get a Nicholson book just in case.

    Still worth contacting BW.

Quite often we have planned our last drop of water to be used by waterpoint X...

Which just so happens to be out of action due to construction works or something equally fun...

So they will be able to tell you about stuff like that

  14. Autumn is IMHO always better. We have had some nice September and October weather

in the last few years. April is a bit hit and miss.

The best is getting up at about 6am when it is still cold and chilly.... setting off and eat your breakfast whilst your cruising :o

    Happy times.

  15. Yes I'm going tomorrow, but only because I was given free tickets.

I like the Excel show because it is dockside and so, a bit more realistic than Earls Court

    with its fake pond.

P.S I'm going to the 2008 not the 2007 one..

    :o

I went when it first started at Excel.. I won tickets from WaterScrape :D

Very interesting to go and look at the things on display. Made many plans for buying a rib that day ;)B)

I heard that they have gotten rid of the indoor water sports arena thing??
