  1. A trip round Brierley Hill and then up the Delph 8, accompanied by CWDF's Michelle and partner Mark. Their local knowledge got us a prime mooring spot overlooking Merry Hill centre, ready for the assault in Netherton Tunnel tomorrow.

It was great to meet you and your lovely family. Hope you had a peaceful night and a good day travelling towards Brum - you certainly have the weather for it.

Did you encounter the Netherton Tunnel ghost? According to my friend, a policeman was murdered in there and his ghost haunts the area! She neglected to tell us that before we walked through it - probably a good idea really!

Keep us posted on Melaleuca's progress!

  2. We were moored (in the way you describe) at the Saltisford arm in June, when loads of hire boats showed up and there wasn't any room otherwise. Still got charged the same money and it is always possible to access and use a breasted up boat, because its a boat, not a caravan.

Can't see a marina going for a discount option. If you seldom use your boat, why not get a boat share?

Oh well, it was just an idea my fella and I were discussing on our evening stroll up the towpath......thinking about it, it comes as no surprise that you get charged if it's at all possible to!

    Back to the drawing board!

  3. The craning out and craning back in might negate the saving you make, I dunno. You wouldn't have to license it if it was out of the water, though.

I thought more along the lines of several boats breasted up so that there was no access to use the boats whilst they are stored but could be bought out onto a proper marina jetty when needed, making it cheaper whilst not in use.

  4. Big push through Stourbridge tomorrow, aiming for Merry-Hill.

Hope your bike riding friends have gone home?

We live in Stourbridge. What time are you planning to get to Merry Hill tomorrow? Could come and help you up the Delph locks if it's after 4ish?

    Let me know?

    Michele

  5. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as narrowboat storage? As in, if we lived abroad for a few months of each year, is there somewhere we could securely store our boat at a reduced fee rather than paying expensive marina fees all year? They do this on some caravan sites - where the van is stored in a different field and the site owner brings it out onto a proper pitch when the owner wants to come and use it- maing it cheaper than leaving it on a pitch all year round.

    thanks.

  6. That is why you should stand ahead of the tiller at all times when under way.

It is also sensible to remove the tiller once in a narrow lock, to give you better freedom of movement on, off and around the boat. Then pop it back on as you leave.

I saw a boat a couple of weeks back whose tiller folded in half to allow movement on the stern whilst in the lock. Thought it was a great idea. Any thoughts to the contrary...or otherwise?

  7. Michele : now, because of 3G internet dongles and laptops, it's easy to find anything on the waterways, now, not just laundrettes.

You can search for supermarkets, laundrettes etc using Google maps. Even the smallest villages now have their own websites with useful information. You can download guides for waterways from Waterscape, which tell you where their facilities (laundry, showers, water etc) are located. You can even locate tips /recycling centres using the recycle now website - just input a postcode from the local supermarket you've just found on Google, in order to call up a list of the various facilities in the area.

If you don't want to use the internet, buy a first mate guidebook, it will also tell you where to find shops etc. Many chandlers sell them.

Thank you all for your replies....much food for thought! I have looked at the First Mate guides website before and wondered how good they are - I will look again with your recommendation in mind - Lady Muck. I'd rather not use space ( or power!) for a washing machine/dryer if I can at all help it!

  8. Hi all

Can you tell me please, how many of you live-aboards have washing machines and tumble dryers on board?

I am particularly interested in those of you who do not live in a marina (with these facilities on demand) and especially continuous cruisers.

If you do not have laundry facilities on board, how easy/difficult do you find it to find the facilities ashore, especially not knowing the area (CCers)?

We plan to CC (eventually) and want to guage whether a washing machine/dryer is an essential piece of kit or not.

    thanks

    Michele

  9. I too am disillusioned with my local freecycle which is why I was thinking we could set up our own and the idea to have it as an extension of the buy and sell section was a good one perhaps?

Where is 'local' for you? I'm in Stourbridge (Midlands/Worcestershire border).

The only problem I could see with your idea would be the distances between us all. Any ideas to overcome this?

  10. You could always use your local freecycle, I am sure boaties use it too, they certainly do down here - although round here it's more like greedcycle.

Yes, I have stopped using my local freecycle as, unfortunately, there are a lot of rude people on there and I often felt that certain people were asking for things only to sell them on....which isn't the point!

  11. Many Thanks.

I've asked BW to try and get a message to her at Bratch as well.

I have just spoken to my neighbour who is a lock keeper at the Bratch and he knew all about this and said that they are keeping watch for her.

  12. Just saying hello . We have been spending our leisure time ( well what little we get  ) in our vw camper but have recently discovered the inland waterways so now on a very steep learning curve again ! . Today we have booked with Snaygill for a short break in October .. can't wait !! Just gonna wrap up and enjoy !!!

We are booked for a week in October too....with Aqua Narrowboats. Really looking forward to it! Take plenty of whisky, rum etc to keep you warm....we are!

  13. My friend is lucky enough to own a property where her garden backs onto the canal. There is decking at the bottom of the garden with the decking also going down to the actual water. Unfortunately, the next door neighbours boat is constantly moored along her decking which stops my friend from 1) having a boat herself 2) having any privacy on her decking (neighbour always sits in boat all day facing her garden) and 3) the neighbour happens to be a drunken, abusive old man!! His boat is not a long canal barge but a smallish fishing boat which takes up about 75% of her decking space. The boat is moored to the his garden but is the larger part of the boat is alongside her decking. Any advice of what she could do about this would be great as the police have been involved and she has contacted waterboard but no joy... apart from continuing to pester the waterboard... any other suggestions?? Much appreciated!

    What did the police do/say/advise?

  14. Definately a good torch and spare batteries, some playing cards, dominoes or crosswords (try to give the TV a miss for the week - it's good for the soul not to know what's going on in the outside world for a week).

The Nicholson guides are very good (have a look on Tesco.com - got mine dirt cheap on there)

A pair of Crocs or similar ( good for slipping on and off quickly to go in and out of the boat, and they have a good grip on the soles)

A wide brimmed hat ( don't want sunstroke whilst out of the stern all day)

    Have a good time!

  15. Team BB and Team Cat (well, the remaining members, at least) and another boat currently awaiting arrival of BW at Ryders Green bottom lock to try and make the gates close. Did early-rising team Tawny Owl sabotage something this morning ...?

Michele - should've come introduced yourselves - we were wondering where you'd got to!

We were just making our way back from the finish line when we saw you coming in (don't know if you saw me - I was taking photos of you, wearing denim shorts, blue top, blue walking boots, black hair) We didn't stop because OH had hurt his foot - think it's broken - so he was in a fair amount of pain and wanted to get home to rest it and get some cold beer pain relief!

Glad you had a good time, though.

We are planning to come to the next Friday night social in Brum. (Is it last Friday of the month? which pub is it in?)

  16. However, the Samson has just changed hands (again), there was only one Locum Landlord pulling pints but no food being served, so we decided to carry on down the flight to Mad O'Rourke's (The Vine as was).

We moored on lock bollards in the very short pound by Dadford's Shed (it was late and further traffic was unlikely) and walked down to the pub.

Mr & Mrs Moley, next time you're going to be up this way, give us a shout - we'll pop down and say hello . We only live a short walk from Dadford's Shed. Cheshire Rose has my mobile number if it's spur of the moment, otherwise PM me.

  17. Where were you all?

We saw Team Black Beauty - took some pics of you as your neared your triumphant finish!

We also saw Tilbrook - took some pics of her too. (I'm sure Neil, of Tilbrook, posts on here)

Was very disappointed not to have seen Tawny Owl, Fulbrook or the Cat who walks by himself.....what happened to you all?

  18. You started it!

I'd say a Short Throw. If you're going to be walking far you may want to consider getting a lighter-weight Aluminum one, but remember to put a hose-clip on it so that it could be fished out with a magnet if you drop it in.

Was it you who fished out YSL for Rose?
