  1. So which Adder is this?

    AdderBrstn86Large.jpg

In the ownership of Barry Whitehead of Bingley, and at Braunston in 1985/6 awaiting further work.

Barry had it for several years, but may have sold it during the nineties. it had a conversion on, and when we passed him sometime around 1989ish at Weedon, it was running with a Bolinder that seemed to race a bit. Think it was still called Adder when at Weedon.

From my own picture collection. It was from the cabin dimensions of Adder that Yarmouth's cabin was constructed.

This was FMC adder, France was renamed "Adder" for the period of time she was decked over and working for Claytons. But thanks for the pictures always nice to see.

  2. Have you got any old pictures of the boat?

What are you restoring it back to? Would be nice to do something different than FMC. Maybe Leonard Leigh colours. They do look good on a full length boat.

    Hi

Well firstly is get the hull sorted out! It will be unconverted. I agree with the other than FMC thing, I even have thought about calling it Adder again and decking the hold would be nice to have no clothes to muck about with, but is sure a waste of space. I like the Leonard Leigh colours would be very different, I don't think I have ever seen a full length motor in those colours? Would like to get a photo of it working for him that would be fun, paint is always the easy part. Did you ever get hold of me mum and dad?

  3. I believe Adder (aka France) was run as a camping boat by Dennis Cooper from Brewood in the 1960s. he later went on to set up Canal Transport Services at Norton Canes Docks which his son Matthew still runs. I's be amazed if the family don't have some pictures. it might also be worthwhile contacting Cath Turpin of the boat Museum Society who has made a study of Thomas Clayton.

After Mungo had it the boat went down the Severn for awhile. A frind has some pictures from this era. I'll give him a nudge!

Hopefully Pete H will be along soon as well.....

    Thanks Paul.

  4. Hi

I have recently bought the EX - FMC motor boat "France". I have setup a website to try to chart the history and to highlight the restoration process.

So, if anybody out there has pictures, info, sightings or just stories about the boat as either "France" or "Adder" or as WFBC camping boat I would be most thankful and you will get credited on the site.

    Thanks again

  5. Another TWT disaster, painted nicely on top to look good and incapable or doing anything because what you cant see is rotten. These people are incapable of looking afeter prime exhibits!! Boat should be sold off with a agreement on its future role to a private buyer who is capable of looking after the boat.

Very sensible idea, if it was done along the lines of a lease purchase over a set amount of time, I am sure a private buyer could be found and would be willing to leave the boat at the museum.

I was at Stoke Bruerne about 6 weeks ago and took pictures of the boat which looked fantastic, I had no idea it was that bad a shape in the important parts.

  6. I have read the entire post of this thread (QSS all threads), in fact I have been each day catching up on the latest news.

My first thought when this news broke that the community of boaters would get together and find this boat in days.

I think there are unanswered questions regarding the viability of the hire and the precautions taken by the owners in that process as well as the misleading info given early on BUT is not the overriding thing here to find the boat and return it to the owner? I would assume that when found at that time maybe all the truth would come out about who did what and how and when.

In the meantime this forum which is a superb information exchange, surely should be used as that to find the boat?

I have seen mention that people are losing interest in the "hunt", I can understand that after reading this thread! Yes there seems to be misinformation and yes there are inconsistencies but is it not possible to pull together and judge later?

I boated for a couple of days in this period and was a bit more interested at looking at cruiser stern narrowboats (at one time going aground while comparing portholes to the printout I had!), this boat could be anywhere, I am sure it will turn up sometime in one form or another, in the meantime lets act as one and find it or it maybe seen as an easy money gig in the future.

Probably gonna get lots of nasty emails now!!

  7. I have a boat Iron hull sides approx 5-6mm and steel bottom 5mm.

I am making enquires for when i'll have her rebottomed.

Can anyone recommend yards/welders anywhere on grand union, oxford, birmingham, leicester sections?

Also any ball park figures from people who have had similar work previously?

Graeme Pierce at Stockton would be someone to help you with that.
