I'm a female on my own living on an ex working boat. This is my first winter and much of it has been spent iced in! I'm surviving though! Just have a solid fuel stove to heat her with. I do wish I had portholes instead of windows and spray foam over polystyrene! Sara

I would like to black or preferably 2 pack my boat at this time of year. I have been told it is a waste of money as the paint will just peel off. The boat yard are taking booking though. Any thoughts and experiences appreciated. Sara

I have a boat Iron hull sides approx 5-6mm and steel bottom 5mm. I am making enquires for when i'll have her rebottomed. Can anyone recommend yards/welders anywhere on grand union, oxford, birmingham, leicester sections? Also any ball park figures from people who have had similar work previously?

I am seeking to buy my first narrowboat. I will have a mooring but am also going to try and cruise her during the winter months on my days off. But that means she may get left for a week or two at a time without me around until i get next get to move her. Obviously this raises the question of security and I realise it can never be guaranteed but how can I make her as secure as she can possibly be. I am leaning towards portholes and steel doors but have recently found a boat I like which has normal caravan styles windows. Do portholes really increase security in peoples experience?
