  1. The River Severn at Gloucester is about 12 feet deep, at Stourport 6 feet deep.

I have a Danforth type anchor, 15kg with 6 feet of chain and 60 feet rope. You need about 6 times the depth if you use rope alone, 3 times the depth if you use chain.

I have not tried anchoring in the lower reaches of the river but above Lincomb lock the river bed is rock and it is just about impossible to anchor there.

You can buy anchors in Stourport or Worcester. Buy one you can lift; the chandleries try to sell ones way too heavy.

  2. its the school holidays in case nobody has noticed.

    .

i am soon to find out for myself what goes on up and down the canals to boats and crews on them.i may have my mind changed for me.

i have not tried to hide the fact i have only just joined the boating part of the canal community even though i have been on the towpath for years on and off.

i will just wait and see but it seems to me people are far more prepared to post and say this bad thing happened, surely some good stuff happenes as well so why not post about them.

if you get attacked for doing nothing, then try doing something, interact and try to prevent it.

Perhaps you would like to come with me someday? I would like to see your interaction with kids throwing stones. Perhaps you can catch airgun pellets?

  3. This year I have been shot at and hit, had stones thrown at me, and have been boarded by teenage yobs.

Boating is my hobby, why do I have to tolerate such aggression whilst trying to enjoy this hobby?

Last weekend when I was boarded I was teaching a group of three new people to their hobby. They were not impressed and I would not be surprised if they fail to join us.

It's a shame that some people pretend that such behaviour is of no consequence.

In reply to other threads I will always report such behaviour to the police and BW; it's the only way things might change.

But it may not affect me much longer.

  5. I use a Megallen Colour GPS with a copy of Map Send Topo software. You get a poor copy of an Ordnance Survey map on the GPS screen. It does show the canal and rivers with contours, locks, bridges, woods but the detail of an Ordnance Survey map is not there.

  6. I am very surprised at the poor technique employed, seemingly by most boats when tying up to the bank. Two slack lines set at 45 degrees, one at the bow and one at the stern, are not good enough!

The minimum system to use on a canal is:

Place two or three marine type fenders between the boat and the bank. This keeps the boat from banging onto the bank.

Tie the bow and stern lines tightly and close to 90 degrees to the bank. This will keep the boat tight to the fenders and the bank.

Just as important, use rope springs to stop the boat surging forwards and backwards as other boats pass.

If tied up like this I am tempted to say you will not notice boats passing too fast; but that would give the wrong impression!

  7. That time of year has come around again, this time next week I will be with 20 17 year olds this time doing the Stouport Ring.

This year I want to give them a spotters guide to the ring of anything unusual that they might spot as we go around, things like the barge locks at Diglis, the circular wiers on the Staffy etc.

I would really appreciate some ideas and thoughts about what they might be able to see (and possibly photograph). So has anyone any ideas on the following.

    1. Unusual bits of canal structure or engineering they might see

    2. Oddities present while doing the ring (staircase locks etc)

    3. If you have a boat moored anywhere on the ring, please coudl you let me know and (with your permission) be included in the spotters guide.

    4. We are also visiting the Black Country Museum/Dudley Tunnel, so anything unusual there that they could spot would be nice.

    Thanks in advance chaps.

    Cheers

  8. We have had incidents with bandits about once per year. Those incidents have been for no other reason than simply because we were on a boat. There can't be many pastimes that attract trouble as a matter of routine.

Last week we were shot at with two direct hits from an air gun. Again that was for no other reason than that we were on a boat.

  9. Fired Upon

Today youths fired an air gun at us in Kidderminster. At lt least two hits on the side of the boat. Unable to take any photos. I will post the police actions and subsequent actions, if any. I also made a report to BW on their Incident Report Form system and will report on that.

  10. BW now have a Visitor Incident Reporting Scheme. You are invited to report anything, fishingmen, cyclists, vandals, motorcyclists etc.

    Their page is here:

    Visitor Incident Report

British Waterways works to provide a safe environment for everyone who uses and visits our canals and rivers. Although rare, incidents and accidents sometimes occur and it is very important for us to find out as much as possible about these events to help us to continue to keep the waterways safe.

The form below helps you to report any incident, accident or ‘near miss’ that you have witnessed or been involved in while visiting or using our waterway sites. The information you give will help us to investigate the cause of the problem, minimise the risk of it happening again and where practical, remove potential hazards.

You can also use the form to report any incidence of vandalism or threatening behaviour, but it should not be used as a replacement for reporting incidents to the Police or local BW office. By reporting an incident you could help save someone else from injury.

Please complete the form and return it as soon as possible to the local BW office.

Please provide as much detail as you can, including information on any craft involved or people who could help us if we need to investigate further.

We ask that you provide your name and contact details so that we can gather more information about the incident if necessary.

If you would like to speak to someone about the incident please contact the Safety Team at Watford, (telephone 01923 201120) or local BW office during office hours.

    The form can be accessed online and can also be to print off and returned by post to;

  12. Which is the most difficult lock entrance?

Here is Gloucester Lock entrance from the River Severn.

    Gloucester%20Lock.jpg

The river flows down stream towards the lock then turns right just before the entrance. If the gates are closed you have to stop the boat when travelling down stream then tie up on the left hand wall. Not an easy task.

Does anyone know a more difficult lock entry? :)

  13. Mike

When the river is in flood it runs at some speed. The question is, will your boat make any headway against the current? 30 miles at one mile per hour is a long time. Near the locks there will be no flow so there're no problem locking. Getting off the river into the canal entrance is a challenge. When the flow is 5 mph and you are making 6mph on a good day, and the entrance being only 15 feet wide. If you are heading down-stream, doing a "U" turn will take many boat lengths to achieve. Don't "U" turn up-stream of a bridge! Going down-stream in the current you cannot stop!!

You may not be insured. Some companies will say that you ignored the advice of BW and therefore you are not insured.

Boats do travel on the river in flood, BW get you to sign a disclaimer.
