    Hull Survey

Sorry I do apologise for the confusion, yes we found a prospective purchaser who was willing to buy the boat subject to survey.

    Hull Survey

Hi not sure if anyone out there has experienced the problems we have encountered with regard a hull survey or if there is anyone at all that can give us advice/guidance on how to proceed. We purchased a 42ft narrow boat in July 2008 with the intention of refitting and enjoying some lovely holidays. We stupidly, I repeat stupidly purchased a boat without a survey, taking the word of the gentleman that owned it. Within two days of purchase we had engine problems but luckily (as we thought) the engine ceased to work on arriving at a boatyard. To cut a long story short we were advised to purchase a new engine, which we did. Obviously the boatyard agreed to carryout the work. After speaking with one or two other narrow boat owners we then decided that before we spent any more money on a refit we would have the hull surveyed. The boatyard carried out the survey in August 2008. The survey was good and the boatyard advised that the boat was in very good condition for its year, i.e. 1990. We had new anodes fitted, blacking and other work carried out. We then decided to proceed with a complete refit. We took further advice from the boatyard and indeed they carried out some of the work. After several months and a great deal of money in January/February 2009 we decided to move our boat as the boatyard had messed us about to say the least and caused us a great deal of heartache. We took the boat just a few miles away to finish the refit and in August this year it was completed. It looked stunning but unfortunately because of what had gone on before with the boatyard it had taken the fun and enjoyment out of the whole thing. We decided to sell and took it to a reputable mariner and luckily we agreed a sale subject to a survey being carried out. We thought this was wonderful and all the hardwork had been worth it However, this is not the case. The survey was carried out on the boat and to our horror we were informed that the boat require replating on both sides, costing thousands of pounds. As you can imagine we thought this could not be correct as our hull survey came out good and the boat has just been moored up for the refit. We were originally advised on our survey that it was a 10/6/4 boat and this is not the case, it is a 8/5 The areas which need replating are 1.9 below acceptable levels for insurers, so all in all our original survey does not ring true. We are at a loss as to what we can do. Surely there must be some recourse on the boatyard that carried out our original survey- please someone out there tell me there is. We have literally spent thousands of pounds on refitting the boat and we would have not done all this work if we had known there was any problem at all with the hull. I must admit that alarm bells did ring when we had to ask several times for a copy of the survey and when it was handed to us it was on a plain A3 sheet with no letter heading or signature. We pointed this out to the boatyard and said that this could have been done by anyone. They did however put there name to it and a signature was gained. Has this happened to anyone else or are we just the unlucky ones. We experienced so many problems with this boatyard and the above it just one of many.
  3. Can anyone please advise what engine oil is required for the above. Also gearbox oil. If anyone can help is it a trip to the local chandlery or do the likes of Halfords stock these items. Thank you for your assistance.
  4. I have had a jabasco water pump fitted in my boat. I have noticed that when I have left my boat and returned some 12 to 24 hours later and switched everything back on the pump makes a noise - should this happen - can anyone help. I believed this to be a pressurised system and therefore thought it held pressure until you next used.
  5. Thank you for your kind assistance We purchased on Ebay an A127 uprated to 70A it arrived in just 2 days and fortunately it bolted straight on. It is working perfectly. A Really relieved and pleased boater. Thank you again. Thank you for your kind assistance We purchased on Ebay an A127 uprated to 70A it arrived in just 2 days and fortunately it bolted straight on. 6. Thank you for your input. We have a Lister Petter LPWS-3 canal star engine
  7. Hi Chris Thank you for your response. The alternator is giving out about 11.8 on higher revs than idle. I have given all the details which appear on the alternator but I have no idea what the output of it should be. We have been screwed by the boatyard that much we have very little faith left. We are hoping that we can find someone who is honest locally to test and if need be refurbish the alternator.
  8. I have been told that my alternator ( GJF Rotating Electrics Rep Lucas A376 21012001 Batch 31697) is not giving out the correct voltage/ampage. This alternator was transferred from an old Perkins Engine (rather large Perkins Engine) but only running 1 starter, 1 leisure battery to my present Lister Engine, newly refurbished, running 1 starter, 5 leisure batteries. John the Electrical Engineer at Starline Boats Nuneaton (formerly Tony Gallimore Boats of Measham, which I may add we have had so many problems with and are still on going since leaving the boatyard) said this was more than adequate for our requirements. We seem to have a problem as it is no longer charging batteries adequately. I have been told we need to have the alternator refurbished. Can anyone advise if it is worth having this refurbished and will it be adequate to run batteries stated plus 3kw inverter. Hopefully someone can help me with this and advise if there is anyone local in the ashby/coalville/loughborough area of leicestershire who can carryout the refurbishment. I am worried that if I have to have a new alternator it may not marry up with present pully system. A really fed up, ----ed off boater who has another problem since leaving the above boatyard, where all work was supposedly done.
  9. On my boat I have a 6 switch fuse board, carrying 250 5amp quick blow fuses. I was told at Chandlery these were fine for 12 volt items on boat. Having fixed 12 volt 20 watt downlighter it blew the fuse on switching on 6 downlighters. Could anyone tell me the best ampage rating to get to suit these, plus Jabsco 12 volt shower pump and general water pump. Obviously such things as a bilge pump, 5amp would be fine. I know that six downlighters may be alot on one switch but I need the space on the switch board. Someone has suggested 20 amp but I thought this might be too high. Any help would be appreciated.

  11. We are in the process of a refit and are about to refit the solid fuel stove/fire. When this was taken out we found a bandage type tape around the top of the flue pipe (which appeared to be some kind of seal) which attached to the collar (outlet) going through the roof of the boat. Could anyone tell me if this is the same type of bandage that is wrapped around the exhaust - or is it something completely different. Your help would be appreciated. Regards
  12. Can anyone advise on winter moorings, i.e. is it fairly straight forward to obtain a winter mooring locally, do you have to pre-book winter moorings and do you have to do this by a certain date. I have only just found out that you can get winter moorings. We do not live aboard and it would be nice to have the boat closer to home in the winter months. Any advice/assistance would be welcome. Also can anyone tell me what a ghost mooring is? I have heard this mentioned recently but have no idea what it is. Thank you.

    relay

I have been told to obtain a relay from 110 amp starter battery to 5 x 110amp leisure batteries. Can anyone tell me what sort of relay and what ampage is required. Any assistance would be appreciated.
  14. Hi jim Excuse my lack of knowledge on the 35mm cable is it the inner core circumference or the outer sleeve circumference.
