  1. Has anyone any knowledge of surveyor John Tough? We're thinking of buying a boat that has recently had a survey by him and are wondering wether to trust it as impartial or get our own done before buying.
  2. Ah sorry yes that was where I read it. Cheers
  3. Good question. I have heard something about a log but again not via BW. Any answers anyone?
  4. probably up to 1.5hr ish, more including to/from stations
  5. As we're new to boating we want to really explore the canals around london. Just cruising in the evenings/weekends wouldn't really achieve this. I'm not saying money/mooring availability isn't a major factor but surely it's better to use the water than just sit in it. Would this not class as a progressive journey then? The transport links around London are so good that realistically you can get miles and miles away and still be within easy access to the train.
  6. So you could technically have a cheap leasure mooring but stay out on the cut most of the time not tied to the 14 day thing?
  7. It'd be on the Stort/Lee/Grand Union The 56 miles was taken from moving 14 miles every 14 days and not returning to point A for 48 days.
  8. I know the topics been done to death but I'm still well confused
  9. Hi, I've been reading the various threads on CCing, other site and the BW info. I'm about to give it a go myself but still have a few unanswered questions... I've read somewhere on on blog/forum that you can't return to the same place for 48 days but haven't found that anywhere else, it's not on the BW guidance notes but I suspect it to be true to prevent "bridge hopping". Is it correct? This concerns me as if I'm CCing a stretch of the network to the end would I have to then return to 56 miles (14 lock miles x 4) previous before doing the 14 day thing again? Is there a cost? Again the BW notes don't seem to say. Am I completely crazy to consider it!!
  10. Think the boat's a Soverign Marine? Any one heard of them?
  11. Strangely a lot of those advertising in mags don't put where they're based.
  12. I'm still having trouble finding surveyors in london. I've tried googling but haven't come up with more than 1 choice.
  13. The boats 57' and has been blacked in bitumin. That was that about anodes?
  14. I've recently viewed a narrowboat and am considering getting a survey done before making an informed decision. It was built in the early 1980's and I'm worried it might need a lot of work doing to the hull. It was last taken out of the water 3 years ago to be surveyed and blackened. I had a look at the survey but as I'm new to the subject couldn't really tell too much from it. It did mention some pitting that should be looked at again in a couple years, like anodes and there was some work done on the swim at the time. My questions are; Are steel hulls of that age something to be wary of? In the worst case senario around what cost can it be to do major work to the hull (such as rebottoming)? What might you pay for a bit of patching? Thanks for your time.
  15. Thanks everyone! Any recommendations for a reliable surveyor in the London area?
  16. Thanks for the advice! Is there a recomended organisation that surveyors should belong to? Any recomendations?
  17. SOS I am looking to buy my first narrowboat to live aboard and am thinking I should get a pre-purchase survey, I've seen a boat I'm very interested in but haven't the experience to be able to judge it on an indepth level. Having limited knowledge I'm unsure of how to proceed. Could anyone give me some advice on: a. How much I should pay for this survey. b. Where to look for a reliable surveyor. c. The boat had a survey done in 2004 that I can look at but what should I look for in it? Thanks very much for any help.
