  2. Yeah, the Three Blog link I posted has all the info on what you can do with the One Plan contract, including tethering (USB, WiFi or Bluetooth), so, yeah, very recommended... My Samsung can do the MiFi thing, but it's recommended to keep the phone plugged into a power source (USB or a Charger) as the WiFi Access Point, but otherwise works perfectly...
  3. I've never used Scotchlocks, but I've seen them in packets in various places selling 12v stuff, and they look like a hazard waiting to happen... I'd rather use Wire Nuts (or Marettes as the Canadians call 'em) over them and even the ol' chocky blocks, they're secure, they're reusable, and they're very reliable: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=wire+nuts&_sacat=See-All-Categories (they're the coloured thingies, Blue, Yellow, Red, Orange and Grey, all different sizes) They work on solid wire, stranded wire, bare copper, tinned with solder, etc., and they're safe enough that american and canadian homes are wired up with them, can't say fairer than that...

  5. As mentioned by someone in another thread, three do a contract with Unlimited (that's UNLIMITED!!!) data, that both on the phone's internet access AND if you tether it to a computer (either by USB or WiFi), and you can get a shiny new phone on it from £25, which for unlimited data without any fair use or data limits is pretty cheap... They have a blog thing here about it, worth a read if you're a bit sceptical like I was initially: http://blog.three.co.uk/2010/12/15/new-all-you-can-eat-data-on-the-one-plan/ And the page where you can get to the phones on the plan: http://store-3.co.uk/3-the-one-plan.html?ref=tariffguide Thoroughly recommended, cos I got a Samsung Galaxy S on it (£30/mo), and I love it, my PAYG Three dongle's been retired...
  6. I always thought a "proper" thermostat used a bimetallic switch with a variable tension dial.....

  12. The mother has a Hauppauge USB freeview stick, and it works pretty well, though it is best hooking it up to a proper aerial and not the little mag-mount sewing needle they call an antenna included with the kit... I think hers has the ability to record one channel while watching another, but I've not tested it, and she doesn't seem bothered about trying to find out...
  13. Not just me doing that then.... (unintentionally of course in my case... )
  14. Well, I know that now (lightbulb on croc clips is a good tester, if a bit crude), and of course I do switch off power too, so, yeah, lessons learned and all... Getting back to the point though, I still wouldn't want to use a 5Amp BS546 as a 12volt plug, no matter how it's wired up....
  15. Well fine, the parts I was working on were properly wired up, from what I could see in the Consumer unit it was all wired up fine, maybe somewhere between there (about 2 floors) and where I was working there may have been a fault, I don't know, and by now the wiring in said house will have been ripped out and replaced. Power to there was cut off by removing the fuse that ran that floor, so as far as I'm aware, Earth and Neutral were still connected, so since then, I have not trusted the Neutral and Earth wires, even with the power completely off... I think you can leave it there now, I did get a shock, I did tense up and I did jump about fifteen feet (or so it felt) in the air....
  16. Well boo, maybe there was a fault in that house, I don't know, stop nit picking....
  17. Wrong in that I got a shock? I'm pretty sure I had electricity surging through my muscles, it's a very distinct feeling as I'm sure you know.... (lucky I only brushed the wires, and not actually grab them)
  18. I said shocked, not electrocuted, if I suffered the latter, I most likely wouldn't have been able to tell you that.... (and that was in another house, which has been stripped out and rebuilt as far as I know)
  19. Lord E. Lordy, what have I started???
  20. How's about putting differences of opinion aside and make some of these hot wings? http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/restaurant-style-buffalo-chicken-wings/Detail.aspx
  21. That's basically what I was saying, the thing on the end of a computer power cable is the socket, but people refer to it as a plug, and vice versa...
  22. Do you use the Socket on the appliance (commonly referred to as the plug) or the Plug (used as a socket on a computer PSU)? Using that setup sounds sensible, but if I were to use that myself, I'd use the 2-pin version, or the one with the horizontal pins to make it more incompatible with anything considered as "bog-standard" on the market...
  23. Having been shocked when doing that in a properly wired up house, no, I wouldn't be okay with that... We can move on though...
