  1. Did i actually say 60litres of fuel !!!! some of you lot just love to be pedantic to the limit of credibility grow up take the main point of the posting as a warning dont try to be some kind of university smart arse who can think up the most obscure point that no other reasonable boater would ever dream of!

    Calm down dear :lol::):lol::lol: and as for the university bit, ok hands up - I did drive through Oxford once, but thats the closest I ever got to a university :lol: I was chucked out of school at the age of 14 ;);):o

    PS. 6 litres or 60 litres of petroleum on a boat is highly dangerous, quantity is not an issue at the point of combustion in a confined space. It'll kill you.

  2. Monday morning a fellow boater asked if i had seen anyone with a couple of jerry cans as he had been the victim of theft during the night, he had lost two jerry cans of 30litre each containg some petrol but thought he had got away light as they were after his generator but didnt manage to lift that from the boat.

    Am I reading this right? This guy was carrying 60 litres of petrol on his boat :lol: whoever nicked it probably saved the guys life! I'm staggered :lol:

  3. By the way I have some old diesel, (roughly 5 years old) do you know if it would still be alright to use?

    Will be ok provided the container it was kept in is full thus avoiding condensation, even if there is moisture within the diesel this will be removed via your fuel filter. Just keep a check on your filters and all should be fine. Should you decide to use it, and its stored in (metal) cans, discard the last drop in the bottom of the can just to be on the safe side, this will avoid any contamination. Plastic can storage of diesel is ok provided it has been kept out of direct sunlight.

  4. My question was simply am I going to end up paying my tax twice: once directly to the council (band A) and again through my mooring owner's business rates (I'm moored on a privately owned boatyard).

    Why not just find another mooring, save a lot of hassle.

  5. We are 5 years away from retirement and have never owned a house, at present we pay just under a grand a month in rent. With people unable to buy houses the rental market will become more popular and rents will increase. We will be living afloat when we do retire, it's unlikely we would be spending £12k a year on moorings, not that we want a permanent mooring anyway. With houses costing upward of £200k (here in the south west), and secondhand boats from around £40k it's plain to see what the cheaper option will be. I feel sorry for people lumbered with mortgages and houses that nobody wants to buy, in particular young people are having an even tougher time getting on the property ladder. For us we've never wanted a mortgage and I'm pleased to say that at this particular time of life, we're happy not to have one.

  6. I use '3' without any problems, its 'pay as you go' so nasty surprises at the end of the month as its impossible run over your limit. I pay £10/month (1gb) which covers all my internet useage with loads to spare, the only downside being it wont 'roll over' to the next month and I never use 1gb per month. I have found it just as fast as when I was running on broadband, but a whole lot cheaper ;)

  7. If someone is on your mooring I would go through the following process;

    1) Inform the imposters they are on your mooring and ask that they move, give them a hand if you can.

    2) If they refuse, cast off their lines, set the scumbags adrift.

    3) You can now make fast on your mooring, make sure you are flying the Jolly Roger.

    Should action no. 2 offend said scumbags, chuck em in the canal.

    This method saves time on phone calls, emails, letter writting and other ancilliary paperwork, it's also somewhat quicker :D

  8. I have been thinking its about time I signed up to one of these mobile internet providers, and get "honest" access to the Internet... I have decided to go with Three as a couple of people on my moorings have one and they get pretty decent speeds. I have decided to go for the 3Gb for £15 / month option. Went to sign up but got stumped.

    Why on earth do they insist that the billing address is the same as the delivery address? I work 8.30 - 5.30 so won't be here during the day to sign (they send it recorded delivery) so what the hell am I to do? Tried Live Chat but they were busy and I hung up after being on hold for 30 minutes... that was sales so I wouldn't like to try tech support!

    Am I making the right choice?

    Three is great but I wouldn't bother buying off them, use Ebay its cheaper and easier. I paid £49.00 for the whole kit on Ebay.

  9. I enjoy seeing anything 'traditional', be it horse drawn gypsy caravans in a museum or a traditionaly decorated narrowboat. However I wouldn't wish to have it on my boat anymore than I would ever have anything painted green on a boat (green considered to be unlucky on a boat if you are superstitious :D ). There is of course the other aspect of being considered a Pikey and all that goes with that :D.

  10. I can remember when TV was simple, black & white and five minutes to warm-up.

    Tv's had lines not dots (great excitement when it went from 405 to 625 and BBC2 started)

    I'm still using black & white :D , or should I say monochrome, rarely watch tv but my PC monitor is colour B) so you could say I'm catching up :D

  11. BUT NO! this delightful pair (who both had expressions similar to a dead pike I saw floating earlier),did not slow down - this part of the canal is narrow anyway with all the boats moored- They were going so quickly that they forced us into the bank into a tree - that we realised later left a thick scratch the whole lengthy of our boat. How RUUUDDEE!!!

    So I shouted 'uh HELLO!!!' but they were off ...and we watched them try to jump the queue at the lock.

    Lovley folk EH?

    Give em 'The Bird' :D

  12. it was not in use ie it was switched off at the remote so we were not drawing any power from it

    I'm assuming there was no power going into it? sorry if I'm reading this wrongly :wub:

  13. And please dont think me too stupid, but I would love to sail accross the water to france, spain etc,

    Dont forget that you will need to be suitably qualified to take a barge of this size across the channel. There are courses you can attend run by the RYA, you will also need to gain a certain amount of qualifying sea time to finally qualify for your 'Certificate of Competency'. Although not that expensive, it can take a fair amount of time and study but well worth it in the end. I took my 'Masters' in the days before the RYA ran these courses, nowadays the RYA has training centres all over the country. Good luck!

  14. I'm with 3 on 'pay as you go', I top up once a month, this costs £10.00. This is for 1GB, I've never got anywhere near using a GB in a month, the downside being you lose it if you dont use it! The costs are as follows;

    1GB of data lets you: Send 650 plain text emails AND surf the web for 30hrs AND download 30 two minute videos AND download 60 music tracks.

    3GB of data lets you: Send 2000 plain text emails AND surf the web for 100hrs AND download 100 two minute videos AND download 200 music tracks.

    7GB of data lets you: Send 4500 plain text emails AND surf the web for 200hrs AND download 200 two minute videos AND download 400 music tracks

    1Gb costs £10, 3Gb costs £15 and 7Gb is £25

    The only other cost was the dongle, got that on ebay for £49.00

  15. My brother runs a commercial boat and usually buys 1000 litres at a time, todays price (8th May 08) was 54.98p/litre. For this the fuel is delivered to the boat, or you can have it delivered to your own tank. Heating oil is a bit cheaper though you cannot of course run your engine with it. Here's the link if anyone wants cheaper fuel https://www.boilerjuice.com
