  1. Hiya Was just having a quick look through past posts for a bit of advice and inspiration when I came across this which was posted back in May: "Well I've been making enquiries and have found a firm in Yorkshire who will make to measure a complete 4' x 2' window with a sliding opener, with toughened glass for £75 inc vat. The last time I had one broken, it cost more than that just for the glass! I've been to see the works, a compact and bejou unit, but busy, and the sections also seem to be a lot stiffer than the originals on the boat, though they look much the same from outside. I think it's 'cos they have two channels, one for the sliding bit to slide in. Seems a much better bet than the small hopper topped type of window. Unless anyone can tell me my I shouldn't I think I'm about to order some new windows. here's their web site http://www.horseboxwindowcentre.com/index.html" Following this advice we took the plunge and bought 8 new windows from these guys in Leeds, they arrived and I think they're brilliant, really nice finish. However.... got them to the boat, placed them in the existing cavity and immediately saw a bit of a problem! The previous windows we had were rectangular with sharp right-angled corners, the new windows have a radius- therefore where the curved corner sits there's a small gap of empty space where metal should be! Looking back, we definately should have thought of this before purchasing, however now its done it can't be helped and I wandered if anyone had any suggestions as to a possible solution to prevent my boyfriend and I sinking our boat with rainwater! Appreciate the help!
  2. Many thanks guys, appreciate your help.... I'll nip off and give your suggestions a try
  3. Hiya We seem to be getting on well with the fit-out of the boat, finally having our newly re-conditioned engine put back in on Tuesday after a month without it! We're about to move onto the insulation stage and I wanted to get one step ahead and look into finding a reliable and recommended carpenter for items we would like within the boat..... for instance a new slider hatch and double doors, foundations for fixed bed and so on. Can anyone help with recommendations? In and around Bradford-on-Avon and Bath? We've already gone too far into our budget with the stage that we're at due to unforeseen difficulties, so we don't want to be taken for a ride on costs! Many thanks for your help, look forward to the responses.
  4. Hi everyone Just wanted a bit of advice because unfortunately our first experiences with our lovely new boat aren't going swimmingly and we could do with all the advice we can get! I'm currently waiting on a mechanic to pop out and see our very sad broken engine and so in the mean time I thought I'd get on with sanding the roof down and starting on the new paint job. However, as there are many layers of old paint not sanded and then new paint added over the years, there are many dips and crevices- lets just say its definitely not smooth! I tried sanding with an orbital sander, however this seems to simply hover over the surface and not smooth things out- I then tried using a chisel and hammer which is taking it right back to the steel and has had some great results but is taking me donkeys years!! does anyone have any suggestions which would involve quicker results?!? I have a generator so power isn't a problem (very sorry about the noise though neighbours!) Many thanks guys, really appreciate the help Dominique on Four Of Clubs
  5. Hi Me and Will are new to the boating world as we've just bought our very own (not so shiny new) 41' Narrowboat- tah very much Nigel!. We plan on ripping out the inside and re-working the layout as its a bit higgledy piggledy at the moment. However, having no knowledge of the interior electrics and the possibility of moving the boiler and so on, we seem to have hit a dead end! Can anyone recommend some good, reliable and fairly priced electricians and plumbers who specialise in boats? They need to be in and around the area of Bath- preferably Bradford-on-Avon as thats where we're moored (although we're going to be moving around quite a bit!) and I promise to make them lots of cups of tea! As we only have a 12v battery we will need to invest in an inverter- so if anyone has recommendations for that too, it would be very much appreciated! Many thanks for your help, we look forward to chatting to you all! Dom and Will
