  1. I was walking along a North Wales High Street one busy morning and witnessed a bloke studiously ignoring his large incontinent dog doing the foul deed just about centrally in the pavement. As soon as the dog was ready to move on his owner did too.

I always carry a few small bags in my pocket, as we have a boatcat, and need to retrieve her offerings from time to time.

I was angry to see this chap's cavallier attitude, so almost without thinking I used one of my baggies to pick up his dog's mess.

I caught up with said man, tapped him on the shoulder and said "I think you dropped something", as his hand came out to recieve his "dropped" item, I pressed the bag, dirty side down into it.

I didn't hang around to see his reaction.

Who mentioned pots ? Ahhhhh Griffindale

We really wanted to avoid pots, they just annoy me and seem to make a mess everywhere, scratch the paintwork, get knocked over easily and so on, that's why we were thinking of a trough so to compartmentalise the greenery LOL

Ah, yes Julynian, but those herbs are a rowdy lot, do you really want them crowding out your more restrained veggies? :-D

  3. You and me both! We've been planning for years to give up our jobs and buy a boat when our son was old enough. He's 20 this year, has just finished college so we've decided this is our year (assuming he gets a job!) The downturn in the economy at this stage is quite scary but I'm a firm believer in following your dreams - if we put it off until the economy picks up something else might come along that stops us. If you've got a dream go for it!

Got to do it now, we promised the cat!

  4. Less than two months until we give up a secure live-in job on dry land and go back to living on the water!

    Scary, but really exciting.

Who, in time of economic recession needs the security of a job and free flat, and all your household bills paid anyway?

    Are we completely mad?

  5. I am currently trying to put together a plan for our move from bricks and morter onto the waterways. I am fairly happy with what we want in aboat and what we can afford etc..

The problem we are having is finding a mooring (not an uncommon problem i am sure).

We need to stay close to Derby, so our options are T&M Canal, River Trent, River Sour and the Erawash. We have looked at Sawley Marina and Mercia Marina, but neither have residential moorings available. BW moorings are no good to us due to none available in this erea.

Does anyone know of any smaller marinas or private moorings in this area that may have vacancys or a waiting list?

Before you read this I apologise, you do need a land based address, as they don't take full time liveaboards. Sorry I must learn to read posts thoroughly before replying.

We are moving onto the brand new Mercia Marina, just outside Findern, between Derby and Burton in early September. They are due to flood the site on 27th July, and expect to be able to take boats by mid-August.

If you're interested they are taking early reservations, and offering 10% off first years fees to the first 150 boats.

The link below will take you to their web site. We found the manager, a chap called Robert Neff most helpful and informative.

    www.merciamarina.co.uk

robert@merciamarina.co.uk is Robert Neff's email address

    hope this helps,

    Lynne

sorry, I intended that as a link, but the URL is correct anyway.

  6. I know someone who was once presented with a live 8" goldfish on their pillow in a similar fashion.

    David

My daughter-in-law, some years ago, opened her front door one morning to find their big bruiser of a tom cat (who'd gone walkabout for several days) grinning up at her, looking very proud of his catch, a big, beautiful Coy Carp worth, it turned out, a couple of hundred quid!

    Who's a clever boy then?

D-in-law hasn't to this day, as far as I know, owned up to the puzzled neighbour who had had his precious specimen fish "stolen".

  7. This is an old topic I know, but BBC Radio 4 once had a programme which gave the recipe for Squirrel and wild mushrooms. sounded great but did not have the squirrel at the time.

    So, you have one now?

  8. One to ponder on a sunny Sunday afternoon with beer in one hand and something cremated from the barby in 'tother..............is there any such thing as half a hole? :(

If you can have a whole hole then surely you can have half a hole, as long as the half hole is only half as deep as the whole hole..........or maybe not??

Anyway, we now have so many whole holes to spare that we're doing a BOGOF special, I said "YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE!", I said, "YOU BUY ONE, YOU GET ONE FREE!!!"

  9. Just found the receipe for school fudge tart, will be making it this weekend. Just imagine, eating fresh made fudge tart while sitting on the boat in the glorious sunshine thats been promised for Saturday and some of Sunday.

    Recipe please? Pretty please?
