  1. Having just changed my boat Itook it out for 3 days checking the engine morning noon and night as it was an unkown quantity Between noon and mooring back at home marina oil had sprayed out of the front of the engine [none g/b end] Is was low down as it had sprayed the engine bearers and mountings This is a vetus 309 with 2500hrs Is there a known fault with these? Is there a breather that could be blocked?

Or suspect gaskets that fail? Fealing all underneath the engine there were no oil dripsonly what had sprayed out under pressure All sugestions gratefully recieved

  2. I have been on the Macc 3 times now when these time trials take place and each time have been unable to ignore them as WJM suggests because each time I have been yelled at several times to get out of the way "this is a race" not asked but told The first time one passed at a bridge a went into reverse to avoid hitting the canoe this left me ascue across the canal with the bow aground which stopped the following canoes passing the laguage was awful So I just carried on after that and let them get on with it but still got abuse BTW it was the MADD canoe club and I think very well named

  3. Our boat has to go I would like to use a good broker but the marina rules say thatI must sell through them if it is kept in the marina and they do not have a very good track record when it comes to selling boats

So how do I get out of this dilema I do not fancy leaving it bankside for ???months or to take it to brokers moorings halfway across the country Any ideas welcolm

  4. Just come back from Llangollen about an hour ago The lift bridges now have bollards either side of the bridge on the offside so it is quite easy to tie up to open and close them The best way on your own is to follow some one especally at Wrenbury and where they are close together by the Whitchurch armIt is now getting busyup there so there is often oncoming boats to leave the gates open for so just enjoy espcially if the weather improoves we had heavy rain every day

  5. A tug called Wotanhas been spending a lot of time on the Macclesfield canal and was last seen by us as we left for the Middlewich arm the last week in april It was on the wide by Lord Vernons Wharf (Braidbar Boats) at Pointon We always notice it as it is so similar to our boat although does not seem to be so well looked after

  6. Go with your heart its easier to live with We have a 40' tug ok for two and a dog on long cruses Great for one and very easy to handle alone Swopped a 60' for it 4yrs ago and never regretted it Still in love [with the boat that is]

  7. When having a boat built afew years ago the shell came not from JW but one of his associates (relatives) We went down to watch it being put in the water It had been in about 5 mins when there was much shouting and it was brought out againand one of the boatyard fitters appeared with welding gear and set to work We were told to keep well away for H & S reasons On asking a lot of questions later wefound out that one of the steel sheetts used for the side had an anglegrinder cut in it but this had not been seen until it was in the waterand leaked So much for being tested and inspected before leaving the works

  8. Saw this boat again in aug when on our way back to L V Marina It looked a lot tidier than before Spoke to the person working on it [owner ?] asked if it was still for sale and he said not yet it still needs some more work doing to it So it may be worth having a hull survey on it and if its sound its not bad for 9 to10k If you talk to John at Kerridge dry dock he will know a surveyor in the area and may even know some of the boats history

  9. Fully agree with exchanging locks As we were coming back up the cauldon there had been some sort of delay on a short flight of three and five boats had come down into a short pound By the time we passed them the pound above was all but empty and there was no way we could get throgh without spending a lot of time re filling the pound At the time there were boats behind us so if three or four of the five had waited above it would have all gone smoothly and quicker for everyone

  10. Saw one acouple of weeks ago moored at calverly on the shroppie ten again on the move at nantwich Idont think I would like to try steering one on windy day as it was weaving about on a calm day It was called Towed with a picture of a toad

    which I found amusing
