  1. Thanks very much guys, it's all been noted much appreciated too....
  2. Thanks guys, the survey is, of course, a must....was just checking if it was ludicrous to get that far in knowing the hull was 5mm, and not twigging if it was too thin... feel more confident in the boat now, still curious about the windows - they look like the sort of thing you find on a house not a boat, any ideas? Grahoom....budget is about £20 000 at most, this NB seems to be negotiable... I have prioritised looking for a boat with sound shell and decent engine/mechanics and electrics, over looking fabulous on the inside. I can always tart her up at leisure as I go along but she has to float and she has to move and I have to be able to function on the inside (lights, tea making facilities etc!) think I ought to be able to get something reasonable - if a bit basic - for that money (let me know if I'm sounding ridiculous please ) funds will not extend much further than the purchase after budgeting for license, maintenence, insurance, fuel etc) until more can be earned if you see what I mean...
  3. Hello all, I'm looking for a second hand NB to buy as a live-aboard, I am not looking for a project boat as I will want to move in immediately, and do a lot of cruising....and funds are somewhat limited. I have seen one recently which grabbed my attention for a number of reasons. I'm pretty new to this, and you all seem to know what you are on about, I have questions...Two about this boat really; the first is, the advertiser says that the steel is 5 *5*5...as in the underside of the hull is only 5mm, this is explained in the ad as being because of her age (1981 build) and steel being better quality then - is that true? Is it too thin? The second question is about condensation, this boat has very unusual cottage-style hardwood windows (meaning they open outwards) the seller says they were fitted 2 years ago, and will need a new varnish this year. The varnishing is no hardship, but I am wondering if these unorthdox windows will cause bigger problems with condensation later on?
  4. Hello all.......this post made me so furious, or rather the all too familiar description of despicable diregard for environment, neighbours, and the social impotence to do anything impulsive about it because of fear of reprisal (which is totally and tragically justified) honestly some people are so arrogant in their ignorant and lazy minds.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Anyway, as tempting as it would be to make a device with which to pump out directly into their chimney, I agree with the comments about photos and calling the cops and most definitely passing on the photos to both the cops and BW. It seems it would be in everyone's interest to involve BW as it is they who will increase license fees to cover the damage caused by such behaviour... and I don't think there is anything to prevent either you or the legal system taking/using photos as evidence. Photographs of minors, (under 18's) carry restrictions for use either commercially or in a court of law, but the courts are able to waive these restrictions when appropriate (ie, the identification of a perpetrator of a crime).....I found these links: http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/fightth...-use.1768723.jp http://www.sirimo.co.uk/media/UKPhotographersRights.pdf
  5. Hi Graham, yup I'm with you there....seems shockingly wasteful to just pour it on the bow ;pThanks Keith, pretty certain it's going to be BW... however, what happens if I decide to leave the canals and moor on a river as a temporary arrangement? If I'm licenced by BW for a year and decide to go off on a journey somewhere out of their territory, presumably I have to get some kind of temporary licence...will it matter in that instance?
  6. Thanks very much and hello to CHris JW and Bjornunder. "Christening Ceremony After a boat is denamed, you simply need to rename it using the traditional christening ceremony, preferably with Queen Elizabeth breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow, and saying the words: "I name this ship ___________ and may she bring fair winds and good fortune to all who sail on her." " (John Vigor)... I'll see if I can book Liz in her wellies canal-side to do the honours when the time comes.......at least if the paint work gets scratched in the process she'll be good for it ..haha!
  7. Hello all, this may be an odd choice of first post...but I've been rooting around in all the sensible stuff I need to find out before bagging myself a nice little NB to live on.... and find that a question (of questionable importance) is constantly nagging in the trivia of my mind. Someone once told me years ago, that it is absolutey forbidden (I suspect as a superstition and not a law) to change the name of a boat. Is that true?
