  1. Annoying thing about insurance is as mentioned above not knowing how good a company is Until a claim goes in.

So just how do you judge what to do to cut down on boating costs?.

If you ease back on the throttle you can hear a lower engine feed that is burning less fuel and saving money etc. But saving on insurance is a suck it and see what happens situation. Pay for the cheaper one and hope to be pleasantly surprised or has anyone some ideas.

Just how did you choose an insurance company to save on the prmium.

  2. Michael Stimpson is doing insurance again but I don't know the name of the company he is working with

He is I believe the guy who drew up a live aboard policy and has now parted company with the large insurance company he did this with.

I could be wrong but am very sure I recently read this in the press.

    Towergate Marden.

  3. As title currently stuck in leeds on the Leeds Liverpool for the next 2 weeks and I am running low on diesel, was going to fill up at apperley bridge,I can not go back on the river as it is in flood and lock 1 will be shut on the 21st for a month , I am waiting for kirkstall bridge to open at the end of this month, I have tried a few fuel companies for a delivery but they won't deliver less than 500ltrs or 205ltre barrel at a silly price , I can buy white from Asda but can only get 10 ltrs at a time , so does any one know where else I can try or is there anyone round Leeds who could get me 3 ( 25ltr ) drums of red thanks in advance

If no help comes your way then just go down the Asda route. You will soon have a good stock in the tank if you buy 10 litres daily. As for cost, just get some spare Jerry cans to avoid the same happening again.

Had a similar situation stuck amongst stoppages last year when wife had knee replaced. Just used a Tesco and swallowed the extra cost.

Would you mind checking yours and letting me know if there's any air in it because mine still almost half full of air. I've got a feeling it's supposed to be like that. I can't see how you'd get the air out if the pump won't do it.

Just spotted this. Mine is now dismantled but I guess operating the pump would have pushed any air straight out through the skin fitting.

  5. But, if using fire cement, each year there WILL be cracks and loose pieces. Alternatively, use black silicone sealant and years and years will go by with no cracks or loose pieces. Zero maintenance required. Your choice!

Can see what your saying and it makes sense. I based my way by remarks on here about silicone not setting properly but guess that might have been user error and wrong product.

Anyway as long as the join is good all is well.Staying alive by whatever means is what counts for us all.

  6. Use fire cement where chimney enters stove. Use masking tape to get neat finish. When dry paint it with stove black paint. Each year check for any loose pieces and re fill any gaps left when you remove loose pieces, pretty easy maintenance.

Where the chimney enters the collar on the roof use silicone.

  7. Thanks for your replies.

The strainer still looks brand new. I bought it with the pump about 4 or 5 years ago (Jabsco Par Max 3). The strainer is about 2/3 full of water and 1/3 full of air. I can't see any cracks in the lid. Is that lid supposed to unscrew? If so it must be on bloody tightly!

Thinking about it, the air must have got in there when I drained and repainted the water tank last summer - sorry I forgot to mention that earlier! blush.png. But I would have expected the pump to clear any small pockets of trapped air on the tank side of the pump which it obviously isn't doing. Also I don't understand how a few bits of trapped air can cause my taps to spurt with air/water every time I open them? There seems to be more air coming out of the taps than can possibly be trapped on the tank side of the pump - although I obviously can't see what's in the entire line, just the strainer.

Same filter i have. The top does unscrew to allow access go wire mesh that catches the muck.

Suggest you take it apart and givve it all a good clean.

Wipe some vaseline around the thread of the lid makes it easy to remove next time.

  8. Is your Calorifier vertical or horizontal?

Vertical should self purge, are you heating the water with an immersion element?

    CT

Horizontal. Just lately using immersion as on a electric hook up for a while. Trouble is ran out of water and all taps released air after tank re filled except the hot. Not completely air locked but enough to be a nuisance when showering.

In that case I suppose the pump strainer could be leaking. Seems the most likely culprit on the tank side of the pump. I've got the entire pump assembly screwed onto a piece of ply sitting on a piece of foam underlay inside a square washing up bowl after my last (Sureflow) pump leaked all over the place. The bowl has a water level indicator sensor at the bottom and the alarm hasn't gone off, but I will check it all tomorrow.

Mine would normally just bleed if I ran the hot tap long enough.

Tried running for long time.....no luck, now looking for other solutions.
  9. Hi,

I have been offered a job to boat sit & cat sit as a live-on-board for a week whilst the owner goes away, which is great, however I have no idea what the going rate is to charge. Does anyone have an idea?

The boat, is an old Dutch Barge if it is of any relevance & is 25 metres in length & there is just one cat. On the internet I am seeing prices ranging from 40 pounds per night! What do you think is a realistic price for a week as there are no extra special maintenance or duties required except to keep the cat comfy & the boat safe ¿?

Any help from experience or suggestions will be greatly appreciated :)

Do you know the owners? If yes then price Will reflect this. Will you have travel costs? Have the owners done this before and are they approachable as to the fee they usually pay. Are you fussed about how much you get it will you be happy with pocket money and a bit of an adventure.

Much to think about and knowing your feelings about it will tell you which approach to make.

If a first just do it for ex's and a change of scenery.

    Above all enjoy!!!!!

  10. With just 39feet of boat, is this actual boat or cabin length, you can't afford to put the stove just anywhere. Space is At a premium so best keep it in the corner. How you will see any benefit, heat wise, moving it to the middle of the boat is beyond me. Leave it where it is and save yourself a lot of money.

Perhaps phoning a few yards for an approxamite quote will make you decide. The cost might shockyou.
