  1. We went down the link on Thursday 20th (to Eldonian). Then on Friday 21st to Salthouse.

There were only 2 boats on both these legs with one boat leaving on Friday morning.

Best Guess a dozen boats in Salthouse over that weekend.

We left Salthouse last Monday with 4 boats in total leaving.

However 6 boats (4 plastic and 2 nb's) passed us at Bridge 9 bound for Eldonian.

The BW chaps told us that 6 per day was the maximum allowed through and that there were going to be that many per day until this weekend. This mainly for the Matthew St. music festival it was thought.

  2. was the stone throwing at the eldonian itself , i and others walk the bootle stretch regular to let kids know locals can see them and hopefully put them off any acting the goat.

O/K, I need to come clean on this.

It was in Eldonian village at the moorings outside the Leisure Centre and Village Hall. We had arrived early in the afternoon and had been watching some kids take kayak lessons, no trouble here.

In the early evening some other kids arrived, armed with stones and attempted a pincer movement on a quite large flock of Canada Geese. They managed to hit some before my wife took exception and told them off.

They then ran away and returned half an hour later to stone the boat from the top of the bank. This was around 7.00pm or so. I asked the Leisure Centre people when the gates would be closed, thinking this would solve the problem. The Lady insisted on calling the police who gave us a reference number but did not attend.

The gates were closed at around 8.00pm but the stoning and abuse continued from the other side of the canal until one the residents chased them away.

I don't know what problems the other boat encountered, only that they had experienced some trouble and preferred to moor at Litherland on the return.

However, this was still a fabulous trip and we refuse to let two or three kids spoil the memory for us. Next time the Geese can look after themselves.

  3. Eldonian Village now has an elsan facilty - as informed by friendly Denise at BW WIgan.

electricity and water are now connected, BW say

BW have said that next year they probably won't use Eldonian as an essential o/night stop

Just arrived back from a wonderful few days at Salthouse. Brilliant trip, very helpful BW staff.

Just two points referring to the above. Eldonian does not have an Elsan facility unless it was installed after Monday of this week.

At Salthouse, Electricity works fine but there is no water available on the pontoons (taps but not connected)

On returning we decided (along with another boat) not to stop at Eldonian but to carry on to Litherland for our overnight. This was because we had problems with stone throwing kids at Eldonian on our way down. (as had the other boat)

However, overall probably the best value trip on the canal system

  4. Elsan water ect burscough ,same at litherland moorings ,shower toilet ect eldonian basin .

your research should take longer than five seconds.

you are criticising the council before you have the facts , before you have even visited and before you have even learnt that the link and the salthouse dock are not even council run or owned.

Thank you for your helpful comments.

I have the Skippers Guide (2009) which says there are facilities at Litherland.

However according to the paperwork received from BW last week the situation is as I stated in the opening post.

That is, Litherland -No elsan facilites, Eldonian - No elsan facilities, Salthouse - No elsan facilities.

"Bridge 17, by prior arrangement with Mersey Motorboat Club, Elsan facilities are available.

I am basing my 'research' on direct information from BW received last week rather than hearsay on the forum.

    (Edited cos I carnt spell)

  5. We are booked to do the Link next week but the paperwork, just received, says that there are no Elsan cassette facilities past Wigan. With the exception of the Merseyside Motorboat Club at Lydiate and this only by prior arrangement.

With the enforced overnight stay in Eldonian village (both ways), this means 6 days without facilities even if we don't stay in Liverpool.

Quite how BW or Liverpool City Council expect anyone to stay for a few days in Salthouse dock escapes me.

I thought the idea was encourage more boats to visit (and spend)

  6. One of our members now has a famous boat!!

I'm just getting ready to go out to the boat and Coronation St. is on the telly.. and what's currently moored behind? The Craft!

Not only that but ITV paid me £50 to switch the interior lights on for an hour or so.

The Stephanie and Ken boat is actually Contrail but there is a sticker over the name reading 'Utopia'.

  7. It is a crying shame that, as others have pointed out, there are still so many groups and individuals who 'did their bit' - fire fighters, merchant seaman to name but two - who do not seem to have ever received the recognition they deserve....

Thanks US, saw the thread earlier.

Both Firefighters and the Merchant Seamen were in the parade and placed wreaths.

  8. Just watched the Remembrance Sunday parade past the Cenotaph. Apart from the usual groups of ex Servicemen/women etc., of those to lay a wreath were the 'Bevan Boys', The Farmers Union, Home Guard, Land Army and others who played a part at home during the war.

However, no sight or mention of the 'Idle Women'

Did they not play just as important a role?

  9. Hi,

He obviously new he was in the wrong so he reversed.

Did you exchange any words ????????

    Patrick.

Not really, He did say sorry, so he knew he was in the wrong. I think the humiliation of having several other boaters in attendance was enough punishment.

  10. Arrived back home yesterday in Worsley after bringing the boat back from Brentford. Very pleasant uneventful 3 week trip until we reached Preston Brook tunnel on the T&M. We had progressed through the timed Saltersford tunnel and knowing it was not easy to make the 'On The Hour, until Ten Past' time slot for the Preston Brook tunnel, we cruised slowly to the South Portal entrance. Waited for 20 minutes or so until 11.00 am then began our progress through. After about 5 minutes I noticed what appeared to be light coming towards us. "Don't be silly, can't be", I was told. Another minute confirmed it was actually a boat. I thought that it was possibly a BW or Bridgewater inspection team. It wasn't and approx halfway through we met another Narrow Boat head on, both stopped by this time. No words were exchanged as the other boat attempted to reverse out. I have been boating for quite a number of years and still find it difficult to reverse in a straight line, however this other guy was much worse and 'crabbed' his boat at something approaching max revs with his stern on one wall and his bow roof making sparks on the brickwork of the other wall. After a few minutes the tunnel was full of burning rubber from his front and rear fenders but he did make it out of the tunnel after 15 minutes or so. On exiting the tunnel (backwards) he managed to find a very reedy bank to settle in. A group of other interested boaters had gathered at the tunnel exit to monitor our progress and as we came out, one commented " bet you never experienced that before". Too true. The boat in the reeds was in a sorry state, the front top handrail was crushed, there were bricks on the roof and his rubber fenders were both shredded. Bet he has a difficult time in explaining that to Black Prince.

  11. But it does work with bananas. Only use 12v bananas and observe polarity. Bananas are polarity conscious.

Do not allow the stalk ends to contact each other or a banana split may result.

Please observe the usual safety precautions, when attempting this at home.

Does this observation qualify me for membership into the virtual pub or do I need another large scotch?

  12. John

We named our boat after our home town (Wigan).

Apparently there was a Roman fort called Coccium in or around where Wigan town centre is now, however we cannot prove as we were not around at that time!

    Steve

Steve, I can nearly remember that far back, maybe we should ask some of the older members.

In any case it was pleasant to spot another forum member.

    John
