Is the Macc still closed?
On the CaRT website there appear to be no closures on this canal, only advice (!).
North West & Pennine closures are listed as the Ashton, Rochdale and Irwell but not the Macclesfield

Your on the spot, so interview and report back.
We won't be back at Anderton until next week at the earliest. waiting for new boat spares.
Also noticed many signs on the approaching roadways stating "Red Unit' and directing traffic to the area of the film shoot.
-
Currently at Anderton Boat Lift there are a number of film location vehicles. Also some serious lighting kit, an aerial camera platform and two large luxury coaches.
Does anyone know what the activity is?

A narrowboat is a type of barge that is (usually) less than 7ft wide.
Or as Cyril J Wood states in the intro to his book.
Let’s get one thing straight from the start… as the title of this eBook and website points out… a narrowboat is not a barge. A narrowboat, as its name suggests is narrow, having a beam (width) of 6 foot 10 inches to 7 feet. Canal barges are between 60 and 70 feet in length depending on the canal they were built for. However, they are at least 14 feet 6 inches beam, are usually used for carrying cargo and are made from steel, wood or even concrete. Neither is a narrowboat a longboat. Longboats were what the Vikings used to convey them on their raping and pillaging voyages of discovery in the Dark Ages. The unenlightened amongst us will quite often confuse the three terms, much to the annoyance of narrowboat owners, canal enthusiasts and boat anoraks in general.

Also, it was not referred to as a narrowboat but a "less than 7ft wide barge"

Tried to sign but I just get 'ERROR 522' on the host website.
Will try again later

Does any one know where I can buy a 12v toggle switch (for the Whale Gulper) to fit through a 1/2" ply wall. There are plenty for sale that go through a dash board with a locking nut but I need one with a much longer threaded part.
Thanks
Hello,
I think you might struggle to find a toggle switch with that length of shaft, mainly because of how it works internally.
I do have a (new) push/pull switch, 2 terminal on/off rated at 12.5amps, this has a shaft length of more than .75".
If you pm me with your earth address I will post it to you.

Should all members automatically be on the map? Or do we have to 'add' ourselves?
Does the map indicate home addresses or boat mooring locations?

Hello,
Isuzu 25
You can buy these filters from any car accessory shop.
Oil Filter: Fram PH-6822 or Fiaam Z527 or Crosland 672 or Mahle OC 115 or Coopers FT4946
Engine Fuel Filter: Fram P-4178 or Fram P-3788 or Fiaam Z532 or Crosland 569 or Wix WL7107
Water Separator Fuel Filter: Fram P-4183 or Wix WF8042
On the last 2, you need to change the drain valve from plastic to metal, to comply with BSS

I remember many years ago (1970's) a television programme with Richard O'Sullivan playing the owner of a Bistro which was to be called 'Robin's Nest.
Just before Christmas he had employed a signwriter to paint the Bistro sign for him.
Job completed, signwriter paid and as he was leaving, he called out " Merry Christmas Mr. Snest"

Planned on going to Liverpool on Friday morning, now looks doubtful as we are stopped below Poolstock locks on the Leigh branch.
Been here since 11.00 this morning. It seems there is no water in Wigan.

The Thames is our favourite waterway.
The last three journeys from Lime House to Oxford (and reverse) have been in the footsteps of Jerome K Jerome. It's amazing how much has remained the same. Particularly the Bull at Sonning.

I'm not sure about fans, many boaters use porthole bungs
We use 2 inch thick foam upholstered in faux leather. We use these as black outs and they offer great insulation in winter.
There's an e-bay seller who makes these to order and you can choose your choice of material/colour. We ordered from this seller, very good quality & price.
Thanks, this seems to a better bet than the paper fans.
-
Hello,no they were like a foldable fan, in plastic I think. Designed to replace curtains.
-
I seem to recall an article on porthole inner covers in the style of a fan, to replace curtains. Does anyone know who makes or supplies them?
-
The Bingley 5 rise page is exactly what I was looking for.
I can't seem to find anything similar for the T & M just yet, although I have e-mailed CaRt to ask if they have anything and I will continue to trawl through their site.

I am sure that the plant I was referring to in the OP was Butterbur.
Interestingly, depending on which site you believe, it either cures Migraine or causes Liver failure.
-
The OP did not specify the age of the children involved.
They are certainly not 16 years old but 10 & 11.
Both can operate locks.
It's just the time in between in which I wanted to occupy them (without x boxes or google)

Can anyone tell me what the giant rhubarb type plant is that grows alongside many canals?
I thought it was Plantain but the Google images are not right.
-
Thanks, everyone for some informative suggestions. I have decided to create my own version of the 'I-Spy' type of book.
-
Does anyone know if there is a Children's " I-SPY" type of book for Canal journeys? I know there is an official I-Spy on boats in general but it does not appear to have a great canal section.
Alternatively, some form of activity book?

As far as I can recall, the red line running up to Westhoughton was the proposed route of the Lancaster Canal circa 1793. The other red line running from around the Bank house area was the proposed Lancaster Canal route to Worsley, via Leigh.
The green (ish) line above the red line was the proposed route of the L & L Canal running through Red Moss.
A combination of the two from the Wigan Flight top (around where the map says 'steam engine') was what eventually happened.

I have the Huewei 5332 which is a Mi-Fi unit which has an external aerial socket connected to a 3G aerial from Connex Technologies. I have a PAYG sim from '3' and that creates a wifi hotspot within the boat and get superb Internet connection just about everywhere I go. I have never failed to get a connection.
If you need a reliable Internet connection then it's worth taking the extra trouble to get the right equipment.

Hello,
What does it cost to run a system like this? Can you have unlimited data? Would it be worthwhile for watching TV (i Player etc.)
Sorry about the basic questions but then I am a Luddite.
