  1. STOP IT

    you're spoiling it!

Living on a boat is supposed to be cheaper than living on land isn't it?

Boat building is having a bad enough time at the moment without you lot shattering the illusion!

Heh. I can safely say I am much better off financially since I've been aboard but then I was lucky enough to sell my dry land abode almost two years ago so bought boat with cash. Hm that doesn't actually help boat builders does it? Sorry!

Anyway the financial benefits are insignificant to the lifestyle benefits (phew did I dig myself out of hole with that??)

  2. I also save for BSS and blacking on a monthly basis. Depending on your boat you may need to include pump out costs.

Other than that I also have an emergency fund just so I have a nest egg there rather than fretting when I suddenly need to update/replace something which is different to my maintenance fund but then I am particularly "boring" when it comes to money these days. It also gives me some reassurance that I can survive for a few months should I lose my job.

Value wise I don't actually save that much per month but I guess it's down to having saved for emergencies, BSS etc over a longer period that I already have enough saved already plus the fact my moorings aren't hideously expensive.

  3. Since we had the stove fitted in november, it has become my hobby! Can't think of a better way to spend the evening, than sat on my bean-bag in front of stove, beer in one hand and a good book in the other, occasionally prodding, meddling and feeding the fire!

Marc - there's a supplier in Mountsorrel that is £8 for 25kg. I'm not at home at the mo but as soon as I'm back (poss not until Sunday or Monday) I'll try and remember to pass the details on to you. It's one of those places that is easy to find when you know where it is but I'm not sure I'd be able to describe how to get there.

  4. You may have done something - or you've clicked on a topic where somebody else has done something.

Look for a box marked "Options" at the top-right of the first post in a topic, and click in it to get a dropped-down list. Near the bottom select "Display Mode - Standard" and everything should return to the format that you know and love.

Phew! thank you - that's much better!

  5. Big Thanks to Tony the manager at Meadow Farm Marina.

He really went out of his way to help the 'exodus' from the aforementioned ' crap marina' this summer.

Made us all feel welcome, and is always happy to sort out any problems...not that we have many!

No wonder the marina is nearly full!

    Nice one mate!

    Andy & Mickey,

    Mark & Jane,

and all the others who made it out alive!!

And no wonder there's still more joining us... it's a great place to be and I'm more than pleased with my home here!

Edited because I obviously hit the button before I'd even typed anything.

  6. Ooh that might be worth a trip to Woolies while it's still around - they had Christmassy stuff at half price a couple of weeks ago. I got some white outdoor lights that are proudly twinkling on the cratch cover (try saying that to non boaters and see their reaction!).

I've even taken to getting up early to put them back on for the early birds going to work!

  7. Is the domestic one battery or a few?

It may be the battery charger is working, just that the batteries aren't, hence the clicking! As the lead is getting hot it sounds like the battery charger is being overloaded?

Try separating each battery see if it will charge any of them on there own.

I just have 2 batteries but configured to 24 v rather than 12v. I'll give it a go on the engine batteries to see if it is the batteries rather than the actual charger. Thanks although I can't believe I didn't think of that (sometimes I worry myself with lack of common sense).

  8. I have a little battery charger that is perfectly fine - normally!

I've plugged it all in this morning to charge up my domestic batteries and it's just clicking in and out (shorting I guess). The negative wire is getting hot very quickly which isn't normal.

I've turned it all off to ensure I don't set fire to anything but I've no idea why it's happening.

I've checked the wires and can't see any damage, I've wiped them in case they were dirty/wet and that's the end of my ideas.

Does anyone know if there's anything else I can check or what else I can do to make it work properly?

    Thanks

  9. ref: My Heroes, in general boating section.

Need to get back to base asap........stranded in leicester, belgrave lock since friday. Anyone who can tell me if river sections from Leicester to Barrow upon soar are becoming passable yet? not good at this end, no drop at lock or weir at present, but hoping it's dropping!

Updates would really help out if at all possible!

    Thanks!!

    Hi Ally

The water levels still really high in Barrow. Yesterday I had a peak at the river and it was really fast although it has maybe dropped a few inches overnight in Meadow Farm.

At least we've managed to escape rain overnight again so fingers crossed it'll drop more during the day.

    Good luck!

  10. I sold up and moved onto my boat last year. I also managed to fall in love and buy the boat with probably the least amount of storage possible. Be ruthless, very ruthless

To be honest I actually have some storage places that would fit stuff in, albeit on a lot. You suddenly realised how much stuff you have that you don't actually need. You become far better at putting things away and packing cupboards and drawers so they take more.

You're right about advertising - it becomes less appealing once you realise you've nowhere to put whatever it is they are trying to sell.

And as for shoes. I have still got my shoes but mostly I live in flip flops during the dry months, trainers if it's slightly damp out there and then boots. I've bought one pair of shoes in the last year and probably got rid of 3 or 4. It's doing wonders to my savings.

Good luck and enjoy. It's certainly the best thing I've ever done.

  11. you are really going to wish you hadn't asked that question.

    http://www.woodlandyurts.co.uk/

Yurts are fab things. If I had a bigger garden I'd have one

I actually got asked a new question the other day! "Are there many spiders on a boat?" Much more original than is it cold in winter. I didn't have the heart to confess that my conker collection hasn't actually done much to keep the spiders out. Although I have come to an agreement with them. They don't come near me or else they get it. I did nearly get attacked by a tarantula the other day but luckily boat visitor saved me.

  12. Would I do an interview? Probably not.....

I don't want to be misquoted - .ie 'it's really really really really really really cheap.

I could always tell them it's freezing in the winter, that I don't have running water or electricity and the toilet is just a bucket?

  13. yep me too <looks around shiftily>

Lady Muck - I wonder whether it's specifically because we're female and on a boat? I'm potentially going to do it as I've done some media interviews before now (about taking a gap year in my 30's) so why not do this now I'm in my 40's (ok so only just!). Are you going to reply?

Denis - it was a pm but giving me an email address.

I may just send an email tonight and say I'd like to think about it over night and then decide tomorrow.

  14. I let my friend sleep over on my little tub at the week end, with her two friends, and they HATED it. Too small, no water - they switched the pump off, nowhere to put huge suitcases and guitar, etc. etc. And, good grief had I been cleaning to make it nice for them too! To make matters worse it was raining AND friends of friend took offence at the memorial on top of Napton Hill marking the bombing of coventry during the war. They were German!!! Can I do anything right ever again - from now on - NO VISITORS, unless they are boaters of course. Please say something nice to me about loving the ditch life, or am I as mad as they clearly think I am?

I think it's a case of either people get it or they don't get it. I've had a friend to stay this weekend and we've had an excellent time, I can't remember laughing that much for that long for ages. They've asked how soon they can come back and is totally envious of the stress free factor of boat life. Guess it just takes all sorts!

Luckily for me they were an expert spider catcher so I'm now officially free of 3 spiders )

  15. I strongly suggest you use the forums search facility, looking for 'EcoFan'.

You will find loads on the topic, rather than everybody repeating themselves.

    Best wishes,

    Alan

I wouldn't be without mine - got mine from Ebay from the States. Worth every penny!
