  1. Hi there Need advice. Thinking of now buying a 40 ft motorcruiser along the lines of a Linssen. My aim is to retire at 50, buy the boat outright and live off the rental income of my apartment here in Jersey. My question will marinas in Holland/Belgium allow permanent liveaboards? I have been trawling upon page upon page on the web but cannot find any useful guidances on moorings, licences required, costs etc. My plan would be to cruise May to Oct and take up a mooring for the winter. Any guidance greatfully appreciated. Ideally I would like to correspond with someone already doing this. Thanks
  2. http://www.inkino.co.uk/zen/index.php?main...roducts_id=2513 I have been trialling this 3G router out and can say without doubt it is the best solution for those without land lines. Having cancelled my landline subscription in favour of 3G (I get 10 gig usage a month all for £25 - I was paying for a core line £12.90 and broadband £17.99 total £30.89) It comes with an external antenna connection, i also have my back up hard drive plugged into as well as my printer. Speeds are very good much better than I was getting on my 2MB broadband connection. I shall definetely be installing this on my narrowboat when I come to buy.
  3. you guys gotta read this...awesome http://www.fernwooddesigns.co.uk/blogwhitefield2.aspx
  4. hmmm, all this negativity is totally the opposite of what they tell you on their web site. No noisier than a fridge they claim! hopefully in 6 years time when i come to buy my narrowboat it will have been much more refined or there will be some sort of self sufficient nuclear power I could use.
  5. anyone have any information on them. I was reading up on the whispergen on this site... http://blog.boattraderonline.com/2008/12/w...fers-quiet.html heres what it says ... "According to Mack Boring & Parts Company, the WhisperGen boat generator is extremely quiet with a noise level similar to that of a household refrigerator. Measuring about 14" Wide x 20" Deep x 25" High and weighing only 198 lbs., it fits discreetly on any vessel to make electricity and heat generation unobtrusive. This 12 or 24V diesel-powered generator provides up to 800W DC output to automatically maintain and charge the boat's battery bank. Through an AC inverter, the battery bank powers radio, navigation, lighting and other systems, handling peak appliance demands that may exceed 5kW with ease." adding it to my wishlist when i come to have my own narrowboat built. it can also be set to automatically kick in when the battery level has dropped to a pre determined level. How neat is that!!
  6. just found this canal map by garmin http://www.mapomatic.net/2009/01/07/mapoma...map-for-garmin/ anyone used it? is it good? can anyone recommend any other elctronic gps navigators?
  7. thanx Magpie what about bridges....would i be ok?
  8. Have you looked into Vodafone data modem which uses the universal gsm mobile network for accessing the internet rather than wifi/broadband. I think for a monthly fee of £35 a month you get unlimited data. Rather good when travelling. It cmes as a USB modem. http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Port...;pageID=BS_0201
  9. Hi there I am thinking of buying a luxemotor around 24 metres length by 4.5 metres wide. My aim would be to sail thru the canals of europe from Holland down to the black sea. My question is, is this possible with this size boat and what height must it be? many thanks Dunny
