    Macclesfield Canal
    Starts At: Lock 1
    Ends At: Lock 12

    Update on 13/09/2018:

Although some rainfall has occurred over recent weeks, low levels of rainfall have persisted throughout August and are forecasted to continue through the latter part of September, this has impacted on the reservoir holdings which are still extremely low. At least 5 weeks of prolonged rainfall would be required before holdings were to reach a sustainable water level to consider reopening of the Macclesfield Canal. Therefore, it is anticipated that it is unlikely that the Bosley Flight will re-open until at least the end of October, possibly later if we don’t experience any significant and prolonged rainfall over the coming weeks. We have opened up discussions with the Environment Agency regarding temporary abstractions to protecting the canal environment, these abstractions will not be for the purpose of supporting navigation.

The Bosley flight is padlocked closed and the gates have been ashed up to reduce leakage.  To prevent unauthorised use, measures have been taken to make the locks inoperable. While the closure will prevent use of that stretch of canal by boats the towpath will remain open for visitors and the local community alike to enjoy.

While we have had the canal closed our teams have been taking advantage of the lock closures to deliver a large programme of works to remedy some of the usability issues on the locks.  Works have included leakage repairs on the gates.  We have also completed gate replacement works at lock 5, wash wall repairs between locks 5 and 6.  Taking the current situation in to consideration we have chosen to bring forward our winter works programme for the following locks, lock 3, lock 5, lock 6. We will now deliver these works during September while the lock flight remains closed.

We will provide a further update on the water situation at the end September, if the water resources have still not improved we will review the opportunity to bring forward the planned winter works at Locks 8 and Lock 12.

This does mean that customers wishing to access or leave Macclesfield canal won’t be able to do so until the stoppage works have been concluded and the reservoir holdings have improved.

Sorry for reviving this nracothread - but did you do that and how's it been? I've got my separett in a box ready to go into my boat. I thought. Until I realised I have to make a wooden plinth for it to go on top of that I can put some kind of lowe level urine storage tank in...!

Lookiung for any handy tips but then it's not exactly rocket surgery...

If you use facebook have a look at the “compost toilets for boats & off grid living”

    lots of useful info.

  3. The Daniel Adamson has been freed from the lock as went past us ( at Rock Savage) going up stream on Wednesday & has just passed us going downstream with a school party on board, it wasn’t long before they were back going upstream.

They were loading & unloading at Sutton Weaver service point, before the swing bridge.

More to the point: how on earth can anyone be expected to plan a cruise for someone they don't know and, furthermore, who the devil buys a boat and doesn't have any idea of their own of where they'd like to go in it or what they'd like to do in it? :banghead:

Remember the saying “if you can’t say anything nice..........”

  5. I had a Nabru one & didn’t find it comfortable at all, I was really disappointed, especially as I’d spent a couple of hours putting it together !

Nabru say they have a no quibble return policy & give them their due they collected & refunded me a few days later, after I’d dismantled it......

Went to Ikea, the Ektorp sofa comes in bits & very easy to put together .

What I can say thought is that when we were trying to find a new (big) prop for Flamingo, before we found we could modify the existing one, Crowthers were hugely more expensive, and a far longer lead time than other suppliers.

Fortunately for us this is not our experience, it will be ready in January & at a cost comparable with buying on off the shelf, also Crowthers having the paperwork from our last prop incident was very helpful.

Did either of these two prop foulings stop the engine dead? There is a lot to be said for having at least one friction-only coupling in the driveshaft, designed to slip a bit in the event of a prop jam to save it getting bent.

The first one stopped the engine dead, making one hell of a racket as it clattered round the prop, we do have a flexible coupling “thing “ - not sure correct terminology - on the propshaft. The second time it didn’t , but obviously it wasn’t going to take much to bend it again

I have a feeling that you will find that your Crowthers prop will turn out to be rather heavier than the Vetus one. I get the impression that many salty water boat props (and Vetus seem to have their expertise in that area) are rather thinner than those made specifically for inland boats and canal boats in particular.

That’s more or less what we’ve been told so are hoping that the Crowthers prop will be sturdier than the vetus.

How do you keep bending your prop?

1st time was  in Stretford, a length of blue c&rt rope that wrapped itself round the prop,  it had  2’ of 2”x2” on the other end that bashed the into prop, bending 2 blades.

2nd time just a lump of wood that we picked up nr Calverly :(

it has been said that vetus props are not the sturdiest......

  10. Just thought our little tale about our prop was worth telling....

In May 2015 we went into the dry dock at  Portland Basin, Ashton -under-Lyne for blacking & to sort our badly bent (vetus) propeller. The prop was sent off to Crowthers to be straightened & came back a few days later looking like new though we were warned that it “ wouldn’t take another straightening” but we weren’t overly concerned as we sailed off with newly blacked bottom & refurbished shiny prop.

Fast forward to December 2017, we are in Uplands Marina for the winter & are booked in for blacking with PIW narrowboat services for blacking in March but once again we have a bent prop :( & this time we need a new one.  We don’t really want another vetus prop given the problems we have had but as we have vetus stern gear we really need one made to measure.

I know I should but I don’t know what size prop we need, it’s one of those things that I have never known about our boat, normally I save invoices/receipts, religiously...but somehow don’t have the paperwork from Portland Basin/Crowthers where it may have been noted down.

So this morning I rang Crowthers to see if they could help & work out what we needed,  the lady who answered (Amanda?) said give me 10 minutes ....then rang me back with all the information needed as they had the original details of the work done on our prop in 2015 !                                           They evidently have records of jobs going back 30 years, all on a card system, not computerised, so if you have ever used Crowthers you’ll likely be in there somewhere !

A new prop is now on order which will be ready in January at a cost of £426 inc vat & delivery, which I think is very reasonable.

  11. I have registered with the Boots online repeat prescription service, once you have registered they get the medication details from your surgery & you have a choice to have the medication sent to your home, a post offfice or you can nominate any Boots Pharmacy so you can collect it.

They send a reminder email when it’s time to reorder, simply tick what you need on the website & it’s done.

I did use pharmacy2U for a while but they messed up a couple of times so I switched to Boots, it’s worked up to now.............

On the couple of occasions I’ve needed urgent medical treatment I’ve been fortunate to be handy for walk in centres.
